BGII sound bugs

I reinstalled BGII & TOB on my Windows XP computer, then added the mods I'd used the last time I played the game (fix pack, banter pack, various individual bug fixes). When I started a new game, I noticed that there seemed to be something wrong with the sound. Irenicus and the golem got the subtitles for their dialogue but no sound; the Shadow Thief got both the sound of his death scream and the subtitled aaah! Imoen, Minsc and Jaheira had their lines of spoken dialogue, but after they joined the party they got the character selection sound maybe 1/4 of the time even though it was turned to be always on. When I turned subtitles on, I could see the lines for character selection dialogue every time even when there was no sound. The sounds for detecting traps and opening locks were also missing.

I thought that maybe this was connected to something going wrong with the mod install, so I uninstalled BGII and reinstalled it again, then started a new character with no mods or fixes. But I got the same problem with missing sounds.

Does anyone know what might be wrong and how I could try to fix it? Making different choices in configure/options doesn't seem to restore the sound, and since I had the same problem after I installed just the basic game from the BGII & TOB discs it doesn't seem like it would be about the order in which mods were installed.

Did you try the basic stuff?

1) Run BG in Windows 98 compatibility mode

2) Make sure your sound driver is up-to-date

3) Try other older games to see if their sounds work OK.

4) Turn off Anti-virus or other security program while playing BG (they can interfere with the game play potentially)

5) Scan your system for malware - if malware is present, it can sometimes affect performance of other programs.

It looks like I have Realtek AC-97 Audio. Is there something better available as an official download? This computer crashed a few years ago and Windows XP was reinstalled, so it's possible that something I used to have is now missing; I don't remember having problems like this before, though, when I installed BGII on the pre-crash version of this XP computer.

When I tried Windows 98 compatibility mode it just got stuck in asking me to insert the CD, no matter what disc I put in, so I unchecked it and was again able to start the game.

BGII is the most "modern" old game I have, the others only have background music without dialogue or sound effects and the music seems to work fine in BGII so I can't tell if this would be a problem shared by other games.

I don't think this is due to malware or a security program. After the crash wiped the computer clean I kept it just in case I wanted to play old games. Before I downloaded DirectX today I hadn't used its internet in years; since I only used the computer for old programs and it's unable to connect to the net without a wire, I didn't renew its anti-virus after it expired.

There's a 2008 driver for that card at this link:

This is probably better than whatever you are using now for a driver. If you have anti-virus but expired, it would be a good idea to uninstall, as I have had cases where expired anti-virus programs were causing issues for a system.

That didn't fix the missing sounds either. I also tried changing sound to Below Minimum in configure, but that just made the mouse flicker ingame.

The only other thing I can think of is that in XP, it has a "hardware acceleration" tab with a slider. If you find it and move it down when playing BG your sounds might work.
