Which companions seem more like real friends to the Warden at max approval?

Some, like Sten and Shale merely come to respect the Warden. But I'm talking about something deeper than respect.

I've never reached max approval with most companions, so I'd like to know if they are anything like Alistair: Showing genuine interest in how you feel and wanting to know about your past.

A common flaw in DA games is that the Hero often plays psychologist and receives very little in return.

Zevran.

To me, it seems as if all the companions can be developed into true friends, except Morrigan.  Though she can be very friendly, especially if the PC is male, she's certainly not loyal if you opt for the US.  Funny you should mention Shale.  After completing her personal quest, Shale says the most important thing she discovered was the Warden's friendship.  Even with Sten, though he largely maintains the stern soldier façade, he does seem genuinely grateful when the Warden finds his sword.

For me Alistair and Leliana. Morrigan I never completely trusted (even during our romance) and there was too much distance between my Warden and Wynne.

An unhardened Leliana isn't loyal if you trash the ashes.  In fact she'll fight you to the death.  Alistair isn't loyal if you spare Loghain.  You simply have no opportunity to threaten what Sten and Wynne care about most (the Qun and the Circle) but they would surely turn on you if you could and did.  Oghren, Zevran and Shale simply have nothing left to care about that much and therefore can't turn on you because of that.

Well not exactly if you opt for the US  this is only a decision you can make at the very end of the game just if you refuse the blood ritual.

It depends with whom you are playing psychologist if you do that with the hermit than it's rewarding.

Dog, of course!

Okay, joke aside, I always got the 'you're my friend and I care about you' vibe with Morrigan, Wynne and to some extent, Leliana and Zevran (besides Alistair, that is).

Morrigan: You've got a chance to talk about family with Morrigan and she can even show sympathy if you tell her that your mum died (considering that she hates her own mother). She can be teasing and shows approval even when you don't romance her, but end up with Alistair or Zevran instead - even as a man in the latter case. And, of course, if you gain max approval with her, it's implied she wants to perform the DR to save your life rather than gain power.

Wynne: There are times that you talk with Wynne and you get the chance to talk about *your* feelings for a change (the 'It's really hard to be a Warden' or 'Everybody expects so much from me' line comes to mind), and she gives you an almost motherly pep talk. As annoying as that can be for some, I rather appreciated that the psychologist thing was on more equal ground in her case.

Leliana & Zevran: Leliana seems to be more relaxed for lack of a better word around female Wardens (the shoes and hair talk comes to mind, where she seems to speak a lot more), whereas Zevran refuses to backstab you at max approval  when you face Taliesen ('I'm not about to allow Taliesen to kill you'). And when you're about to rush to the gates outside Denerim at the final Onslaught, they both express regret if you don't choose them in your party, because they want to be there to help you - even when you don't romance either of them and you're just friends. That's quite touching.

Since we're talking about friendship I'd say Oghren.

I don't think is the case here at least is not in my PoV since she abandon the warden with some disrespectful words  if the ritual is refused which imply that she cared more about power.

Since we're talking about friendship I'd say Oghren.

Oghren the best ready to help you even after DAO.

Not true, Stem will fight you at a certain point in the main quest if he thinks you're not focused on your duty as a Grey Warden to stop The Blight. Sten is about devotion to duty. Wynne is also prepared to fight you twice in the Circle Tower if your plans for the Circle put the mages at risk.

Oghren, that guy will follow the Warden to hell, back and for drinks after.

When family life wasn't suiting him he decided to join you as a Warden, and overall just seems to really appreciate you for treating him as an equal .

I say Morrigan, not just a friend but also a sister...she save Elissa life by sacrifice herself being pregnant Alistair's demon baby and so Elissa can marry Alistair and live happily ever after....she almost cried when talk about it.

In Origins, probably everyone except Loghain, and even in his case there is at least some respect and a desire to make things right.

Alistair sees you as a brother, and tells Goldanna that you are his friend. He leaves if you accept the option to make Loghain a Warden, but I still feel like he is still a friend afterward. Just a very angry friend.

Morrigan seems like the betrayer at first, but before you reject the Dark Ritual she does have a "friend" conversation with you, and remarks that she didn't think it was possible to have a friendship with a man. So she does seem like a friend at max approval. She abandons you before the battle, but friends make mistakes. In Inquisition she regrets leaving like that.

Wynne, Leliana, Shale, they all call you friends. Zevran calls you a friend. Sten calls you kadan. I'm not sure if Oghren does, but he shows his appreciation for how you turned his life around. And of course was always your loyal friend.

In Awakening Oghren looks to you for advice. Sigrun seems to like you. Velanna comes around eventually, and seems like a friend even if there is a point of friction between you because of Seranni. Nathaniel becomes a friend over time, especially to a Cousland. Anders can be a friend pretty early on if you help him look for his phylactery and defend him from the templars. Justice seems to be not quite a friend, but only because he doesn't really understand most things. But he does admire you if you are just. The only other one who doesn't seem to reach friend status is Mhairi, and only because she sees you as her commanding officer up until the point she dies in the Joining.

What a weird concept of friendship the one in which one is being cheated by their LI and "sister".

Oghren and Sten.

Oghren and Warden have some fun moments like when they go to find Felsi and Warden gets to be Oghren's wingman to smooth things over. If your Warden dies it is said in the epilogue he names his first born after you. And in Awakening he follows you to Amaranthine to join the Grey Warden's. I remember how glad I was to see him again when I first played Awakening. He was my Surana's best friend.

Sten is slightly more odd but once you gain his respect he starts to call you 'kadan.' Maybe it's not friendship in the most traditional sense but I think they both had great respect for each other and were glad to fight side by side. If your Warden dies Sten pays his respects before departing and when he returns to Par Vollen the qunari ask him if he met any worthy people in his travels and he answers "only one."

One thing is certain: Alistair is the biggest bro in the party.

That conversation about the fun he had with his fellow Grey Wardens and the gossip about your party members feel like genuine bonding moments.

But neither of those happen when they are friended up.  In Wynne's case she's barely met you when you are given the choice to sacrifice the mages or not, and Sten won't fight you if you've already won him over.

Actually, I believe Sten will still fight you if you take him to Haven even after finding his sword.
