BioWare's future...

I highly disagree that there are better ways to communicate with your community.
Twitter and Facebook are not good mediums to get into big discussions, especially the kind that really get into criticisms and praises of the games. The problem is that being that social media isn't good for that, neither are sites like Reddit where I have no guarantee that BioWare employees are even posting there.
I do however agree that BioWare is not in danger of being shutdown. Especially after EA was very happy with the sales of DA:I and, arguments of a weak year aside, the game did actually get a lot of praise from critics. Studios releasing games like that don't tend to get shutdown unless the budget was so badly mismanaged that they actually lost money on the whole thing.
I could see Mass Effect being retired as a franchise, but only if ME:A does poorly.
This whole move seems like a corporate move of "Well we aren't using it to talk to our fans, let's shut it down so it's not an expense we have to pay".

I've been advocating the same exact position since I heard the news. In truth, Social Media just isn't conducive to drawn out, in depth analysis or constructive criticism. Not with all the sensitive and overly opinionated social justice warriors you have to deal with on places like Twitter, Fakebook, etc. And to anyone that thinks private groups are the answer- good luck getting a developer to give 2 shits about it.
Maybe it's good for the "image" of your product Bioware, I don't know. But you're slowly destroying the relationship with your fan base and lessening your own accountability. Such a huge mistake.

I agree. I don't think it is that BioWare thinks that message boards are outdated, but the reasons to have their own has become outdated since their developers have left to go to places they feel they have more control and don't feel like they are handicapped by needing to play nice because it could reused against them or BioWare in the future.
I just wish they tired to do heavy moderation before shutting the place down for if they drove people off because of the moderation it wouldn't have mattered.

And that I think is the real impetus of the issue then.
There lies the port
The vessel puffs her sail
There gloom the dark broad seas, my mariners
Souls that have toil'd and wrought and thought with me.
That ever with a frolic welcome took the thunder and the sunshine and opposed
Free hearts, free foreheads
You and I are old
Old age hath yet his honor and his toil
Death closes all; But something ere the end
Some noble work of note may yet be done...
Tennyson, Pyjak.
In other words nothing lasts forever. But we still have this place for 20 days.
I'm over it.

I totally agree with you on that but that's just big business for you. Twitter and Facebook are sadly where the money is right now. Most headlines in the media originate from places like Facebook and Twitter, mainly Twitter. And of course EA is capitalizing on this. But that's not really my gripe. My gripe is all the "fans" hurriedly pushing the doomsday button for BioWare.

EA's stock price up 25% or so year to date, and DAI was considered a success.
However, the ME3 endings fiasco contributed to a 1+ billion dollar market cap loss for EA in the weeks following the fiasco. A replay of this and I imagine all bets are off.
Edit: reply to replay..

My thoughts exactly. They aren't in any real danger unless they repeat the ME3 debacle

Once MEA predictably becomes commercial failure, Bioware will be reduced to skeleton crew making mobile and facebook dating sims.
It'll be sad for me there isn't another DA or ME, but the silver lining to this, blatant racists like Manveer Heir https://twitter.com/...302806496886784 and that GTA virtual rape girl they hired will get fired, so there's that.

I am old and a minority in playing computer games. But all around me the cell phone is the major tool of communication. I daubt that tool is very good to use in communicating on a forum.
I am sorry to say most people seem more interested in fast reaction without much depth. Getting your two cents in is more important than substance. Twitter ect are more apt for that. Maybe collectively we should think more of the impact of our own behavior. I frankly don't see much mallice in this decision except for a monitary one.
Sad yes, totally unexpected, no.
I will mis the forum greatly since I dont use any social media.

Maybe it's good for the "image" of your product Bioware, I don't know. But you're slowly destroying the relationship with your fan base and lessening your own accountability. Such a huge mistake.
I think you're drastically overestimating the amount of representation that Bioware's fanbase has on these forums.

I'm still wondering if they aren't hoping for a certain amount of erosion in the relationship. They might want the more traditional "we make games and you buy them" approach instead of the evolving "you demand games that validate your personal beliefs and sensibilities, and we'll try to come up with something while you find new complaints".

And there should be very little chance of that, since the new game will be about beginnings and potential, not crushed expectations.

I never insinuated anything like that, but define what that kind of representation looks like to you then?
Objectively speaking, this place served as an open forum where fans could amass and generate feedback on the game. Said feedback was concentrated in one area, as such it was made easily available for anyone who wanted access to it (be it fans or developers)
But since you're prodding for my opinion- I have no doubt that upon numerous occasions the user feedback generated on this forum did in fact have an impact on development. The issue comes down to the fact that Bioware is effectively eliminating the "open forum" as a medium.
I've stated why I think it's a bad idea throughout numerous posts in the past.

No I think you're right, it definitely comes down to more than just image though. This is just as much a marketing plan as it is a business scheme. Just look at the kind of communities there are surrounding other EA games (with the exception of battlefield, good luck finding them).
Honestly I've never had an "issue" with Bioware. I've never found them to be negligent in the development of their games or felt like "wow, these people just scammed me". I never used the forum as a means to try and impose my own visions upon the franchise. I think I speak for the vast majority of fellow users when I say that last one.
Look at it this way though, regardless of whether it's always been used properly- in instances of dissatisfaction, BSN was in essence, the fan's right to freedom of assembly. That's not to say that fan's are entitled to this service, but Bioware sure as hell doesn't inspire a whole lotta faith when they cut the tongue away like they are.
I really think this one's on EA though
