So just how MMO-ish is DA:I?

I am considering buying it for PC. I am a huge fan of DA: O. Didn't finish DA II which I thought had lackluster combat compared to the first. The main thing that makes me hesitate though with DA:I is that I've heard it has MMO-like aspects and I absolutely loathe MMOs with an undying passion. The endless generic "fetch 10x" quests, the mind numbingly boring combat etc.

So is there any truth to the comparisons?

I've played World of Warcraft for about 8 years. DAI is nothing like an MMO. There is a plot with choices to make, character development, and all of the things you expect from a Bioware game. Most of all, what it does not have are other people, which is a necessity in the second M of MMO.

Having some fetch quest does not an MMO make. Most games have fetch quests. Even DAO had fetch quests. The primary task in Ostagar is a fetch quest, there are a few in Lothering, and several more throughout the game. Let's not pretend that DA2 was loaded with pointless fetch quests that added nothing while every quest in DAO was deep and tied to the story in some meaningful way. Yes, collecting venom sacks from spiders to help a farmer make some poisonous traps really enriched the world. What harmed DA2 in this regard were those items you find in the world that automatically put a quest in your log and Hawke somehow magically knew to whom it belonged. That was absurd. DAO had window dressing for its fetch quests whereas DA2 did not.

Kay so it's really just the quests people are talking about when they say mmo. So ima do a thing to make the quest structure all laid out and simplified.

- Main quests. These are the big delicious hunky chunks of meat that consist of maybe like 25% of the games content. They have cut scenes and choices and all that good stuff.

- Companion quests. These are basically smaller main quests but with a focus on a companion. Still very interesting if you care about that particular companion. I'll go with 15% on this one but that's probably being nice.

- Fetch quests. Boring boring boring. Prepare to blow your ****** brain out if you try to do all of them. I don't think there's ever a choice or a cutscene. It's boring **** like "take flowers to my dead wife's grave pls" yes that is a quest. And yes 60% of the game's content(or maybe even more) is this. You can skip alot of it but idk if it's possible to skip all of it.

Gathering, gathering, gathering. The specialization quests also required feckin gathering! Collect elfroot for potions, Collect minerals and rags! Fill the Inquisition supply! With your own Andraste-blessed (very important) hand! This is ridiculos!

(But maybe just for me, and people enjoy collect herbs, shards and books, and whatever things, what need for the happiness.)

It didn't feel like an MMO to me. It felt like an SP-RPG that lacked quality side content. The MMO comparison is just low-hanging fruit. In fact the majority of MMO's I've played have had better side content then DAI, so...

It's more than just quests. The combat + limited skill bar is really similar to GW2 or other action MMOs, imo. Then there's the large open maps and the gathering...

I've played a lot of MMOs and DA:I felt distinctly like an MMO to me. I'm not saying that's bad though. A huge reason I've enjoyed the DA franchise is because of the group-based combat which made me nostalgic for MMOs. DA:O came out right around the time that I stopped playing MMOs, at least in any social kind of way.

I like doing a few gathering quests myself. You can get it on a sale.  Is money the concern?

I liked DA2 Combat.  If your saying there's too much Combat in DA2 that makes a little sense but not much.  :D

I actually like the quest to take the widower's flowers to his dead wife's grave. It's quite touching.

There are a lot of fetch quests, but as others have pointed out, you can ignore most of them. Just focus on the main story. Though, if you didn't enjoy DA2 because of the combat, you probably still won't enjoy this game. The combat in DAI is more similar to DA2 than it is to DAO.
