Lightning Mage Build

Hi guys,

 

iam looking for an effective lightning mage build.

My build so far is:

 

Chain Lightning+ (Arcing Surge)

Energy Barrage + (Energy Storm)

Static Cage+ (Lightning Cage)

All Storm passives

 

Flashfire (unused)

Flashpoint passive

Clean Burn passive

 

Fade Step+ (Frost Step)

Winter Stillness passive

 

That's it so far. I'am using StormPact Belt for double lightning damage, always using

a staff with lightning damage.

 

I really don't know what spec fits best with lightning...

RiftMage has the weaknesss bug, KE is melee and i wanna be ranged and necro needs

65mana for walking bomb so i may have big mana problems.

 

What do you think? How to optimize that build?

 

EDIT: I got vivienne in my party for casting barrier and dispell priorized. Playing on normal with trials.

In that case you should really use Necromancer this time.
 
Walking Bomb is a charm with energy barrage by the way. You have 100 mana total. The way you never have to actually pay the 65 mana for a walking bomb or the first walking bomb is to 1.) cast walking bomb at a distance at a target...while walking bomb is flying towards the target you still have 100 mana (it only deducts once the projectile hits) 2.) cast energy barrage (or chain lightning + energy barrage if you cast walking bomb from REALLY far away and have time to cast both before walking bomb hits)...so 50+ mana is deducted for the energy barrage and chain lightning...you now have less mana in the mana pool than what walking bomb costs. 3.) walking bomb hits but since you are under 65 mana "nothing" happens with your mana pool, the mana cost is completely ignored but the spell hits!. 4.) IMPORTANT AND ULTIMATE CHEESE: if you want you can get a SECOND walking bomb for FREE IF you detonate walking bomb manually IMMEDIATELY as it hits the target but before the last energy barrage projectile hits the target. If you do that walking bomb (the ability in your quickbar) somehow resets instantly...that's right...no cooldown and no mana costs for the first walking bomb cast this way. Now if you have 65 mana you can cast it again normally again (this time it will deduct the 65 mana as your energy barrage is now on cooldown), OR you can instead cast 2 energy barrages in quick succession while the first walking bomb is flying to the target instead. It's your choice if you want to double you walking bomb or your energy barrage this way. Energy barrage vs single targets (bosses), walking bomb vs groups of enemies.

That's how you launch lots of energy barrages at a dragon all at once (if you use a lyrium potion and have the extra mana you can sometimes even get 3!! yes 3 full energy barrage casts of while walking bomb is slowly flying to a target. How to kill dragons or any large target fast with a necromancer:



BTW, you can play hard or nightmare, no need to stay on normal, electromancer is very strong.

If you have a tank in the party you can also use deepstalker sigil on the mage (I always used it on my necromancer if I am in a party) and always get into flanking position to boost damage. That is easy with fade step. It is especially lovely to detonate walking bomb if you are flanking with the deepstalker sigil as you can eventually get 11k+ hits on the 500% upgrade and 15k+ hits on the 900% upgrade that way. Just make sure you detonate it if you are flanking. With vitaar and qunari I got 16K walking omb hits that way.

Also, Sigil of the Bear works with mages.  It effectively cuts all spell costs in half.  I found it invaluable on Necromancers when their key ability costs 65 mana.  You can't use the free walking bomb trick with Sigil of the Bear though.

I agree Electro Necro is the way to go.

You can also craft with the Fade-Touched Masterworks that reduce mana/stamina costs, like Fade-Touched Royale Sea Silk or Fade-Touched Ring Velvet. Different tiers should stack, but you probably won't get better than about 15% cost reduction on average.

According to the Wiki, Fade-Touched Plush Fustian Velvet (Focus) actually does "Abilities cost 10% less Mana/Stamina." Wiki has been wrong before, though, so YMMV.

Probably better to use the slots for Walking Bomb Masterwork and other damage procs, in any case.

I am not 100% sure anymore but I think you can actually still get the free walking bomb this way as long as you cast 2-3 energy barrage after letting wb fly, or use some of the mana up on a lightning static cage before you start doing that. But it was not as consistent in getting that little chessy trick off as without the sigil. Mind you, it is no problem to get off extra energy barrages this way, but it is more of a problem of timing the walking bomb detonation since by the time you cast 2-3 energy barrages you will be too late to manually detonate the initial walking bomb cast to have it completely reset without cool down and at no mana cost like I described above. You have to detonate it in the split second it hits the targets. You still can get off 3 energy barrages in the time walking bomb is flying which is pretty cool though. Anyways I prefer deepstalker when playing in a party as I explained because you can just play a flanking mage then, and if you need a bigger mana pool in a fight just drink a lyrium pot.

But great bear sigil is really good, as you can do sequences like static cage, followed up by the free walking bomb trick with the energy barrages without using a lyrium pot. At 100 mana pool, it is not quite enough to sequence lightning cage + walking bomb + energybarrge/ chainlightning + energy barrage.
