Like I said I am not an expert, but I don't see why amending the save your account post with a "Hey if you don't want your info moved shoot me a PM" or assigning another person to that duty is so hard.

Agreed. I'm sure that if Fexelea wasn't on her way to GamesCom 2016, this would already be done. She did after all summarize the options in a reply in the other thread:

Please do not derail this thread.

It is not possible to ignore specific posters. If you want to delete your posts, you can
a) do it now before those subforums are scraped
b ) once the import is done find and report the posts so they are removed. (there's no guarantee your posts have been imported)
c) claim an account and then request deletion of associated posts.

i have concerns, things that i think are important and therefore legitimate (to me at least), and not an unnecessary effort to see what options there are, and this place seems to be the spot for a so-called civil discussion about it.

Well, no, this is actually a thread for rumored horror stories about freeboards and for each site offering refuge to transparently reveal their policies, so that we can compare.

But, I have no problem with the side-discussion, as long as you are willing to explain why. Melbella has already explained: concerns about Fextralife's ownership policies and country of incorporation. One may agree or disagree with the reasons, but they have been stated.

How about you? You've made it clear you don't want any copies of your UGC made by any party: first, second or third. Okay, why? I'll be straight with you, I'm skeptical of arguments against copying by third-parties, but I'm willing to listen and learn.

Chiming in.

1. Point made that Fexelea took it upon herself to scrape the forums. This was done after people asked for it. I have not seen on the other forums that the current BW has been scraped or saved. Correct me if wrong.

2. Ownership. These are public forums, technically "owned" by Electronic Arts but no writing is copyrighted by anyone. Forums are considered "hosted" content, not "original" content and freedom of speech by US 1st amendment is not honoured here because these forums are "public view not public owned."

3. It is fine that people do not wish their words on other people's websites. Contact the people who are scraping, or saving, the forum posts and delete them yourself.

4. Zero personal info is being saved anywhere. There is no access to anyone's info. I saved my profile page to wayback and it stated "YOU DO NOT HAVE PERMISSION TO SEE THIS." Private messages are not saved.

I have been backing up every mod posted on the BSN Legacy website that is made public or public view. I am not deleting any of it but neither is any mod being made public. I have been in contact with many mod authors who either A. have their own hosting or B. have is hosted on Nexus or C. hosted on ModDB and have been working with several other people on holding this info in a place where people can search for mods that are missing. We have a spreadsheet with our current work. Private blogs are not saved, personal information is not saved, anything not public is not saved. If you wish further information for the BSN Legacy Project page, please contact me on nexusmods.com.

"Rare and inconsequential" are factual descriptors of the complaint at hand. I've only seen one other person on here share this view and the view itself holds neither legal merit nor moral weight. Jakenou doesn't like that someone is archiving publicly available content that happens to also include content he made publicly available. Okay. So what? It's fine that he has a different opinion than most people, but nobody has an obligation to take any action based on that opinion.

If he feels strongly enough in that opinion that he feels the need to ask that some action be done to appease him, well, that's called a favor. And I'm perfectly fine with someone requesting to have their content be deleted from the archive as a favor. What I take issue with is the sense of entitlement that said favor be granted and the indignation at the revelation that, hey, it's not a straightforward process and will require some effort on his part.

In sum, I don't agree with your assessment that Fexelea and others doing what she's doing "should hold themselves responsible for having a standard operating procedure" to deal with cases like these. She doesn't owe him the right to have his content be deleted any more than she owes the rest of us the right to have our content be saved. What she does with her time and resources is her business. She would be perfectly within her moral right to say "Hey, sorry you don't appreciate some of the things I'm archiving, but I'm not going to go through the effort of removing thousands of your posts from the millions I'm importing." That she instead went with "I'll do what I can" is a courtesy. Something that should not be repaid with more disgruntled complaints.

I'm going to echo DomeWing's point. It isn't that those worried about this should be dismissed and their concerns with them, and I don't actually think anyone is so far trying to do that.

There is however, a mounting quality of understated accusation being levied against Fexelea, implicit in the use of words like "ethical," for example. Fexelea has said, she simply can't isolate a single poster's history and make sure it isn't being transferred, and there doesn't seem to be reasonable cause to disbelieve her.

So, what can anyone imagine that they can gain for continuing to press the point? Her canceling the transfer entirely? Bit late for that.

When people post on this site, they do put that content out in the public domain. Fexelea has no legal obligations here, and any ethical obligations she might have are satisfied by her communicating the most effective way for people to avoid their content being retained on a different site.

It might involve you jumping through a hoop you don't want to, but considering Fexelea has no other way to accommodate you otherwise, trying to guilt her about that is a completely fruitless exercise that will only waste both your time and hers.

Just to examine it, I've tried to delete an account on Proboards (VSN as an example). It appears to me that they still keep the information. You have to supply a new password, which allows you to undo your decision later. That doesn't sound like deletion of the account to me.

That's because you actually have two accounts.

You have a global one with the proboard/freeboard whatever service and a specific one with each forum. The forum admins can only see the specific one you created in that forum, they can't do anything about the global one.

Nope. Proboard global and forum accounts cannot be deleted, but they can be hidden.

There are indeed two cases.

1. You cannot delete a forum account, but you can "unlink" it from the global account.

"If you have a Forum Account that you no longer want linked to this Global Account simply select a forum and an account from the drop down menus below. You need to set a new password on the unlinked account. This password will be required to link the forum account in the future."

So that password is required to link it again in the future. The data is kept.

2. You are supposed to be able to delete the global account, which contains all the linked forum accounts.

"This will permanently delete your Global Account. Please enter your password to verify."

However, another new password is required to access the forum accounts in the future:

"Any existing forum accounts you have linked to this Global Account will be unlinked. You need to set a new password for the unlinked accounts. The password will be required to link the forum accounts in the future."

And:

"Type the word "delete" in the space below to verify."

That doesn't make sense at all. If something is to be deleted then there is no need to ask for a new password to reactivate the forum accounts in the future. That is not deletion, that is hiding the accounts.

If you delete the global account, it is gone.

If you delete the forum account, it is gone.

Should you decide to create a new forum account, then you can use that password to link it to your existing global account.

Should you decide to create a new global account, then you can use that password to link it to your existing forum account.

That's how I understood it.

Perhaps. However, the italics in the quotes in my post are directly taken from the Proboards site and make me believe otherwise. They never tell the user that the forum data is deleted. They tell that the forum account is unlinked. Even if the global account is deleted, the forum accounts still exist, and they provide you a means to get these back.

I can say that the admins on ProBoards forums don't have access to any information from accounts that have been deleted.
Teehee

But what ProBoards does with it, I have no idea. If it remains in storage but inactive then it sounds like the same sort of trap that Facebook uses. Annoying, though I generally don't expect a faceless corporate entity to use such info for anything untoward aside from possibly advertising and spam, and gmail is pretty good at blocking spam.

Having thought about this I'm really annoyed with the attitudes of some ppl on this thread.  Once again an altruistic, kind gesture that is overwhelmingly positive is being threatened by the few.

I'm looking at this from the perspective of a Youtuber.  I've had my videos stolen and re-uploaded, zoomed in so the watermark is off the screen and then monetized.  Obviously I sent Youtube after them and got them shut down.  I've also had photos taken and credited to other people, and worse of all a design taken and used by a big company.  Viewers then sent me photos of it gracing the shelves of Walmart and major drug stores in the US.  THAT is stolen content.  Videos, photos, unique designs etc that you yourself created.

When I write here I'm just giving an opinion, and as soon as I hit the post button relinquish any ownership of it.  This is not my website, I'm writing on EA's boards and I assume that they can do whatever they want with it. (Oh look, they are, they're deleting it all )

I can copy and paste anything anyone has written, head over to another site, and copy it there and claim it as my own.  Easy peasy.  They're just words, and if you value them so much I suggest you only ever write your opinions in a book or on your own personal website so you yourself maintain all ownership over them.

The exception would be those ppl who've worked hard to write a guide or a mod that is on BSN.  In that I case I fully understand them wanting to protect that.  Otherwise, the other 99% of content here...it's just words on the internet that anyone can take at any moment.  Fexelea is not claiming them as her own, is not taking them out of context.  Instead your name is right there, everyone knows exactly who wrote it and it's credited to you.  Yes there's the legal stuff, but she's addressed that and there IS a way out if you're uncomfortable with it.  Although it begs the question, if you're so worried about the legal ramifications of her site, did you do the same when you joined BSN?  Did you question EA about their terms?

In the deletion of this forum BioWare have done their fanbase a huge disservice.  I for one have found hundreds of hints and tips that have drastically improved my enjoyment of their games.  That information will be lost.  To try and preserve it, with all the back and forth of conversations, quotes and whatnot, is a noble thing.  It will keep that knowledge base preserved and intact for future playthroughs of their games whether by me, or newbies.

I would have thought that that would be the goal of anyone invested in this community.  Wanting Fexelea to jump through hoops to delete all your words, even though she's already outlined how to do it, is to me, selfish, and shows that you have more interest in yourself than in the BioWare community and game help going forward.

If the words you wrote were so incredibly interesting, unique and creative then pull your finger out and find the URLs as Fexelea asked.

I'm grateful, but then my focus is keeping all of this wonderful stuff available for those who need it.  This is the internet ffs, get real.  They're just words, and unless you wrote something in depth and major like a guide or a mod, let it go.

Fex, I want to say you're a dear for posting what you did and setting up what you have. You didn't have to explain, but you did, and that was very swell of you. Thank you.

Couldn't agree more. This is about saving all the valuable guides and information both old and new users can frequently turn to if they ever look for something. I am SO grateful this is done and I do want to respect people who don't want their content copied, too, but honestly, this project isn't about individual posters, it's about the legacy of this community, all the hard work that would be lost. If you cannot take a 'hit' for that, then you have a way out if you want it.

I have to wonder. What's so hard about creating an account on fextralife to have the posts associated and then deleted?

I would try for myself to search all of Fextra for all mentions of jakenou but the search is currently down. Pretty sure with 3k posts trying to delete it by hand would be mad.

A minor note on ProBoards here.

It looks like  they don't support UTF8 in their e-mail notifications.

Basically, any notification about new PM, message or thread in Russian, Ukrainian, Belorussian, Chinese, Japanese or any other non-Latin-based language is goign to look like '???? ?? ???? ???'.  It's not forum-specific, the most recent thread in their support section was from a Chinese board admin(January 2016),  and it had not been fixed as far as I can see.

Not a big thing compared to the total wipe-out, but I thought it was fair to mention it.   :)

Note: it only affects the notifications, the posts and PMs work just fine!
