I bought my game from direct2drive. Turning on AA in catalyst control center doesn't work. THe only way to turn on AA is to rename masseffect2.exe to UT3.exe. When I do that, I get an error saying I have to reinstall the game. It doesn't matter if I run the game from the main exe or from the launcher. Only way to get around this is with a cracked .exe which I do not want to use. So basically, anyone who bought the game can't use AA.

I am using the latest catalyst 10.1 video drivers released YESTERDAY.

Here I have to say that the problem lies with ATI, who still don't support user manageable profiles to make it possible to use custom AA adaptions with any game WITHOUT having to rename it.

Renaming is very crude and many games won't run if you rename them.

The problem is not the fault of:

BioWare

nVidia

ATi/AMD

The fault lies with Microsoft and Epic Games. Unreal Engine 3 uses a certain procedure in its graphics that cannot be used with AA under Microsoft's DirectX 9. BioWare have no control over this at all.

This is a problem with most games that run off of the UT3 engine. Try setting the Transparency Antialiasing option to Supersampling. In any other setting you wont notice any reduction in jagged edges. (I'm going off of what you had to do in ME1)

Antialiasing works with nvidia cards, and it also works with ATI cards if you rename the exe. Which as I said, I cannot do because I bought the game.

I blame the UT3 engine actually.

The Unreal engine is the problem (or Microsoft Dx9, take your pick), it is not the fault of nVidia or ATi.

Doesn't the ATi control panel have a global setting? That would be better than fiddling with renaming files etc.

Well ATI was supposed to release profile thingy in the latest drivers (10.1) like NVIDIA has had for years. Drivers came out yesterday and nothing, no profiles.

Actually ATI Catalyst Control Center does have profiles, and they do work for Mass Effect (and I assume ME2).

Open up the CCC, change the settings to what you want them to be and hit 'Apply', click Options -> Profiles -> Profiles Manager, type in the name of the profile ("Mass Effect 2"), under Composition make sure 3d settings are checked, under Applications put in the path to masseffect2.exe. You can add a desktop shortcut in Activation if you want. Then click Save.

Then you can change the settings back to your default (ie Application controlled Anti-Aliasing) and when you you active the profile from the profile manager, the ATI tray icon, or the optional desktop shortcut, it will start up ME2 with anti-aliasing enabled.

I have Polish CE, and in the Config menu, under Options, I can clearly see "Antialiasing". I set it to 8x, but because I'm not a graphic person cannot say if it works or not. I guess I will try turning it off and on.

It's a UT3 engine issue actually. ATi actually made a workaround for the 9.x drivers which force AA on the UT3 engine with a significant performance hit. nVidia and UT3 have limited AA but it's not great. UT3 was borked due to the XBOX compatibility it had to retain.

Setting the profile in 10.1 is possible as explained above, it just doesn't work in exactly the same method as Forceware which IMO is a good thing.

P.S. cybtropic - why not use a cracked file if it fixes the problem. You can even rename it to UT3.exe and just place it in there. It's not Bioware's fault it doesn't work and it's not going to be fixed by Bioware, Demiurge or EA. Only people that will fix it are Epic and they aren't going to either as they are working on UE4. Taking the moral high ground only means you are going to get wet sooner in this case. And when you have paid for the game anyway what's the issue with not damaging the DVD any more...

YOu didn't read my first post. There is NO PROFILE for masseffect2.exe, even with the drivers released yesterday. So again, like I said only way to enable AA, is to use a cracked exe and rename it to ut3.exe. THEN you can have AA in masseffect2.

CCC's profiles are no good for various reasons. They can't be compared to nVidia's profiles and the profiles managed by nHancer. But that's a different discussion altogether.

I see, I thought the profile manager let you set up new profiles but like you're saying it only applies settings to exe's the driver already knows about, when I renamed masseffect.exe to masseffect2.exe it stopped working.

I didn't have ME2 to actually test it, waiting till they patch UE3's stupid Vert- setting out so I can play it at 5760x1080 proper. :(
