Using Flaming Array

I've just started a new run and am aiming to build a Rift Mage according to the build found here:

http://dragoninquisition.com/mage-builds/

(AOE Rift Mage Build)

The thing is I'm not sure I'm using Fire Mine (with Flaming Array) very sensibly. It's still early in the Hinterlands and mostly I'm just Immolating from afar and laying down Fire Mines if the enemies get past Cassie and come for me, which I generally hope they don't.

I can see the appeal of Fire Mine if I could place it anywhere on the battlefield, but Flaming Array means the mines drop right at your feet. Making them a defensive spell, surely? And as Cassie gets better at pulling aggro, it's usefulness will surely just continue to drop off. Yet many Rift Mage guides I've read recommend bee-lining for it.

Why? Is it just so that I've got it in my pocket for when I finally get Pull of the Abyss and can drag enemies onto them? Or is there a way of using them efficiently now that I'm completely missing?

Can you toggle the Fire Mine upgrade from Flaming Array to Searing Glyph? You have more freedom to place Searing Glyph where you want.

Both are useful at times. Flaming Array for defense, running up to enemies, and fighting in close quarters. Use Searing Glyph otherwise.

You need to position yourself more closely to the enemy to use it aggressively, I guess.

You must be close to use Flame Array.  But this is fine because on that build you have Ice Armor.  So always drop your Ice Array and/or cast blizzard.

Personally, I did not like the Rift Mage build on that website.  I highly recommend you look at StarFlorge's infinite mana rift mage.  Or if you want you can look at StarFlorge's Rift Mage mine build.

Thanks for the suggestions. And Bigdawg, thanks for the tip. Starflorge's Infinite Mana build looks great for a solo run, but maybe less so in a party game with friendly fire...?

But the Rift Mine Mage looks great fun. I think I'll swap to that instead. :-)

A bit late to the party, but I'd take Veilstrike over Firestorm (for Solas) any day of the week and twice on Sunday.

Oh, I didn't realize you were doing friendly fire. It is horrible in this game.  I liked it in DAO and DA2, but the tactic options let you prevent your team from being idiots.  It's sucks in DAI IMHO.

As for the infite mana build, I used that for a party.  Starflorge shows things solo to prove how survivable they are.  But that doesn't negate how great the synergy is with the skills.

Personally I hate the firemine with a passion.  It either trivializes content or you bang your head on concrete when you run into fire resistant enemies.  With the Infinite Mana Build you have to carefully balance your mana with cross-class combo procs from putting things to sleep.  Want more mitigation, keep blizzard up.  Want to put someone to sleep, shock them and then Veilstrike.  Shatter enemies that freeze.  Massive AoE eldritch detonators with Energy Storm.  Just lots of fun that mixes in the best of every tree albeit without boring ice mine / fire mine spam.

But each to his own.
