I hope you people paranoid about privacy live in a bubble otherwise you better observe every device you use in your household including your TV or cable box. Don't use your ISP either because they log every single thing you do on the internet and it's impossible to hide it from them as your service provider.

Yes, wiping the drive fixes it in the short term, but it also leaves you open to all the junk still. If someone is really naive enough to think that's fine, then well...whatever. It's dumb as hell, but people are free to do stupid things for illogical reasons.

Oh, and one thing to note, if one truly cares about gaming performance, then one would be running Antivirus/anti-Spyware programs regularly to ensure top performance. If your PC gets bogged down with junk, then your gaming performance will suffer. Wiping the drive doesn't prevent performance issues, it just sets the drive back to state zero.

How fast would he get enough junk to take a noticeable performance hit? Weeks, months, years?

And if he isn't having performance issues yet, and there isn't any data he cares about, how can he be said to be having a problem?

This is a very, very naive way to think about use of any electronic device that connects to the internet. Enjoy the fact that your PC is probably infested with trojans and spyware, all because you were too lazy to "worry about security".

Laughing_Man got me wondering, so I installed Malwarebytes Anti-Malware trial and run a scan. 4 hours and 907k objects scanned later, it found 8 threats: 6 were .txt and .nfo files that came with episodes os The Flash. Good luck hiding anything in those. 1 was some toolbar for IE, I don't even use that so no concern there. Last one was IIRC trojan.wreckit in intaller of Ventrillo, that is in backup folder and was ran maybe 7 years ago on completely different PC. Our entire WoW guild used it and noone, including people with bestest AV had any problems.

I may be naive, but it works for me just fine.
EDIT: @AlanC9: No performance issues whatsoever, if anything my PC is over perfoming, all things considered.

Come to think of it I do use Windows Defender, so this may indicate that it's not as much of a joke as I thought it would be.
