First off, I have the fix for the damage formula.

Secondly, I am level 16 already, and just picked it up.  Which means I already did 15 levels worth without it.  So I know it is possible not to use it.  Really the most annoying enemies are mages or sometimes magical annoying things.  But high rank targets aren't going to be one-shotted anyway.

There are two relatively useless archery talents in front of it that I basically haven't used at all (Crippling Shot and Critical Shot).  That means this thing basically costs 3 points.

Character feels points starved there are so many places I want to spend points.  Zathrien fight would have been a little easier with Master Stealth, but I didn't have it.  I did have the ability to shoot him with one arrow that did 146 or something damage... after I spent a long time killing everything else.

Still have to do Urn, then Carta and the Deep Roads.  Also the mage hideout in Denerim.  A couple of the encounters I can think of in these might be a little easier with AoS, the ones with more than one mage in a confined space.  Of course I could also make a bunch of grenades and lob them I suppose.

Other stuff on my talent wish list:

Master Stealth (mentioned already)

Useless things x2, then Lethality

Pinpoint Strike and Keen Defense maybe?

I'm not very good about using Arrow of Slaying just for a mage but when it works it's cool.  In fact I really like arrow of slaying for that.

I'm not very good about using Stealth either.   Do you get a crtical with using Stealth?  That might be more worth it.

Do you have Scattershot? Auto-hit and auto-stun. Should give you time to kill the mage before he can do anything, not to mention extra utility against groups.

AoS can be fun, but it has marginal utility, it would be the last thing I fill in that Archer Tree. It's nice opener if you have talent points to burn and stamina to burn.

I remember getting AoS for Leli once. With SoC and Dueling activated, she didn't even have the Stamina to shoot off an AoS.

Yeah I already had maxed the top and bottom archery lines.  So AoS was the last thing.  Usually use Pinning Shot for the white mages.  The Yellows were really annoying early game though.  Figured it would ease the pain with some of the annoying encounters with multiple mages, but it is probably making me slightly weaker to everything else.

You made me look up Stealth so it only criticals if you initiate Combat.

I didn't even notice this is a Solo Archer Thread.

Yeah I forgot to mention that earlier, but it does give you one crit.

Anyway I did the the Last Request / Denerim Blood Mage mission without using AoS so that convinced me to respec (actually I had before finishing Brecillian Ruins so this sort of returned me to the old level path... used the points from Crippling, Critical and AOS to get Lethality).  That gave me the 13 gold I needed for Felon's and then did Haven / Urn.  Didn't really miss AoS there at all, and there are really only 2 spots with more than one mage that you have to fight at once.

The last one is in the first Kolgrim encounter.  I had actually planned to fight him on the Mountaintop before the Gauntlet and did it that way the first time, but there was only one mage out there.  Killed him there and reloaded.  Fought him inside.  Stealthed fast enough that the mages didn't get off misdirection hexes, then walked right next to one mage.  Used Scattershot, killed the far mage, then switched to near.  I was a little slow on Dirty Fighting when he woke up, and he was able to attempt a Winter's Grasp, but it was resisted (massive 34% spell resist on this character...).  He died before Dirty Fighting wore off.

The worst spots with mages that I can think of from here on out should be the twin emissaries with spiders before the Broodmother.  Other is the entrance to Drakon.  I don't know if I will try to get AoS by then or just see if I can finish without it.

Critical Shot & Arrow of Slaying are worth it for me playing an archer, or a hybrid archer. However, Stealth is a key talent for survival, and Keen Defense is also one I generally select (but skip Pinpoint). Thus, I get them late, or not at all depending on the Talents taken elsewhere (eg; DW, Open Locks, etc).

Personally skip the Lethality line, as STR is usually higher than CUN.

Talents I'd rather have (not in order, last in tree only)

Dirty fighting (1)

Lethality (4)

Stealth IV (8)

Lockpick IV (12)

Master archer (16)

Scattershot (20)

Keen defence (23)

Song of courage (26)

So if I read 3 tomes, I guess I'd take it at level 23

You should be able to initiate both of those with a scattershot out of stealth though, right?

Probably.  More concerned about that Dead Trenches encounter since it is really annoying.  Of course it is also optional.  Will need to lure spiders first anyway.

I did read 3 tomes, but I am not taking the Deft Hands line past 2.
