I really dislike Origin. Not friendly with mods. It partly explains why I didn't even bother to finish DA II. And it deters me from buying Inquisition. I know I won't play it more than a couple times without mods.

GOG actually patched their version so that Origin can't see it.

I am now able to play DAO without either the Steam or Origin client running
Which is perfectly fine with me
And all my DLC content seems to be present and correct
I just hoped someone on the forums would be able to explain why that is?

I feel that EA made a poor business choice in not placing Inquisition on Steam with Workshop integration etc
But perhaps after some time they will
Are there many mods for Inquisition?

I don't think many people attempted to make mods for Inquisition after they pulled out from Steam and made people play through Origin. I bought DA II disk for that precise reason and couldn't play the game. When I contacted the company, they made me install origin to play DA II. Mods didn't work with the game. Very unhappy customer here. I forgive Bioware because DA Origins was the best game I ever bought and I have three copies, one steam version and two disks so that I could play the game from different computers. I don't mind spending money for a good game, but I will not pay for a game that doesn't allow mods, which can enrich game experience.

Wow that is unfortunate
I have Inquisition and look forward to playing it
But it is a shame EA make such poor decisions
And now I hear the Bioware forum is closing down
So is that another poor EA decision?
Or is it a Bioware decision?
Bad decision either way imo

There are currently 1,148 mods for Inquisition on the Nexus Mods, with more every day. And mods work fine for DA2, (I currently play with 33 running) with over 1,000 for that game, and over 2,300 for DAO on the Nexus as well. And whether your game was installed via Origin, Steam, or retail disc is irrelevant as far as whether a mod works. (The knowledge and skill of the player trying to use the mod is the only thing that matters there.)
The decision not to put any of their AAA games on Steam was EA's, and probably a sound business decision at that. The cut of all revenue that Valve demands (both base game and DLC) couldn't be justified when EA has its own digital distribution system. The dollar amount of the lost sales (after Valve's slice off the top) is minimal compared to not splitting the revenue of the rest.

Maybe you are right that it was my knowledge and skill that let me down. It took me a while to understand how to use mods with DAO. However, I wanted a disk version because I thought it would make it easy to install mods with the game and wasn't too happy when realised that I was forced to play through Origin anyway. Maybe you can help so that I can finish DAII at least once. The thing that really bothered me was Hawks' appearance. I don't want to play as a female and the male version looked so much like my father-in-law that I found it really off putting. Elves look so damned horrible and I hated that. I installed two mods according to the instruction, which was the same as DAO mods, and it didn't work. So where did I go wrong?

Thanks for the link and info
I am really looking forward to Inquisition
Since I activated the Origin update a couple of days ago
my Steam installation of DAO now runs from a new shortcut which the update placed on my desktop
and the game runs without either the Steam or the Origin clients being active
All my DLC seems to be present
When I try to load a savegame from before the update I must force load because the game is not finding a small mod I used to hide helmets
So I am surprised by this change since the update
and surprised that no one here or on the Steam forums seems to know anything about how this happened
??

@Aathis - Have you reinstalled the hide-helmet mod? Doing so should at least eliminate the force-load message. (Some Origin users - myself included - found that a recent update via Origin caused the game to not recognise previously installed DAzip 'community' mods... in my case, that meant reinstalling 75 or so mods, but the game functioned perfectly and as expected, once I'd done so.)

Have to say which mods you're talking about before anyone can troubleshoot...

The elves looked exactly the same as before - still looked hideous.

Are you trying to mod DA2 elves or DAO elves?
(Your previous post seemed to be about the former, but the mod you've linked is for DAO, not DA2...)

Oops. I was looking for ways of changing elves' appearance in DA II and couldn't find anything. Did google search and this came up and so thought this was for DA II. Is there a mod that changes elves' appearance in general in DA II? I talked to EA and they just said Origin does not support mods.

Thanks, I reinstalled the mod and it seems to be working ![]()
Did the recent update to your game also remove the requirement of having origin or Steam running?
I have a new shortcut and the game now runs without any client

I've been installing DAO (and DA2) from Origin for years - since 2011 - and have never had to launch via the Origin client or have Origin running. I've always been able to run both games from a shortcut.
And I'm not a Steam user, so I don't have any idea about that. ![]()

In other words, just to summarize, every single "issue" raised by the OP is... resolved. ![]()
(Except for not liking the appearance of the Elves in DA2. That's a matter of taste and can't be disputed.

So, if DA II is just as mods friendly, how come you can't change the appearance of the elves? DA Origins are full of mods that change appearances of companions, PC and NPCs. And it may be a matter of taste, but that's what mods are for, providing satisfying game experience for all kinds of people with different tastes. I'm not the only one who dislike the appearance of DA II elves. Surely some people would have tried to change that, if the game was mod friendly. Maybe I was blaming Origin for something else. But isn't that true that modding became very much more difficult with DA II?

I am the OP and I am not the person complaining about the Elves

That also helps me to understand what happened
Somehow the Origin update disabled the requirement to have the Steam client running
Which suits me fine
