In Origins, quite a few NPCs told the PC stories. Morrigan spoke about her mother's side of the tale about Flemmeth and Cormac. Wynne spoke of the Grey Wardens and griffons. It gave depth not only to Ferelden's background, but to the characters themselves and what stories they felt were important. How they told their stories revealed more of their character.
However, it was funny that Leliana told the Inquisitor off by saying along the lines of "If you want a book, go to a library." But I do miss the stories within Origins. I did like listening to Varric's spreading outlandish rumours about Hawke in DA2, but he cut himself off before you could hear more in game. And Solas seems to give a brief synopsis of what could be interesting stories. Even the Storyteller in Redcliffe gives only brief snippets.
