Oddly enough, I did Legion's loyalty mission. Heck, the only loyalty mission I didn't do was Samara's, and she somehow lived.

Hmm, then my second guess would be that you took Tali's side in the dispute between her and Legion, and didn't make it right with Legion afterward.  That cancels his loyalty.

My third guess would be that the sniper rifle upgrade you make him has something to do with it.  I kinda doubt that, though, since IIRC he doesn't do any shooting in that part.

I can confirm for a fact that if Legion is fully upgraded and loyal (you did his loyalty mission and then used Paragon/Renegade options to either separate him and Tali, or make it up to him later), he survives being sent through the shaft.

On the positive side, Legion's death really isn't that big a deal since the Geth are a collective sapience. :P

Just finished my first play of the game, normal difficulty, final level 30.

I did just about everything I could find, maybe missed a couple of found planet quests but everything else was done.

Garus did the leader on both final maps.

Legion was the tech in tunnel(figured he could withstand more because of being machine)

Samara was the biotic

Snead(merc extra) was the escort to crew.

Everyone survived until Mordin died defendingthe door while I fought the reaper embryo. Don't know why he died, only thing that I can think of is I didn't use him for a while so he was not leveled up fully, but then neither was Jack and she survived fine. There has to be a randomness involved to some of this, because like I said I did everything and bought everything I could find except one medigel upgrade.

I survived; however, everyone but Thane of my squad died (I had sent him through the vents, thinking the point was stealth, not tech brilliance), and all but one person (Chakwas) died from my crew.

Beat the game in appx. 30 hours. Everyone but Zaeed and Jacob survived. Wasn't so sad about Jacob but losing Zaeed really hurt. I miss Zaeed so much. Sniffle... I don't know who I should've put as leader of team two the second time. Zaeed led T2 the first mission, but on Mission 2 he died. Who did you put as team leader?

I can confirm that you're wrong.  If you make a non-loyal teammate leader of the fire team, the vent specialist can die

Ah!  Well, that would explain it then.  Thanks for the info.

I finished the game loosing only one squadmate in the process

Tech: Tali
Team 2: Garrus

Bioshield: Samara
Distraction Team: Zaeed (died)
Escort: Grunt

I thought going into this mission that if I lost anyone, I'd go back and make a different choice to save them, but, to be honest, I'm not that broken up about loosing Zaeed. He was helpful early in the game because you could do his loyalty mission before anyone else's, but there was no real connection to the character.

I initially took Jacob and Mordin as my teammates for most of the battle, but during the 3rd time picking characters, it occurred to me that he had done little to help me with the enemies in terms of powers. Pull was pretty useless on the Collectors with Barriers and I know it's a bad idea to pull husks toward you, so I replaced him with Jack. Her Shockwave was really usefull on husks and Mordin's Incinerate was useful on just about anything.

I loved telling TIM what I really thought of him. I hope blowing up the Collector base won't wind up being a bad thing.

I was really touched by the small scene when we were headed to the Omega 4 relay when my Shepard (hadn't romanced anyone) gazed at Liara's picture. I'm looking forward to seing how that pans out in ME3.

My one regret was not getting my Shepard up to level 30 in my playthrough. 28 is close, but it seems that, even though I imported my level 50 Shepard from ME1 and completed all the N7 missions, it just wasn't quite enough. I'm hoping that future DLC will give me the opportunity to make it over those last few levels. I don't want to do a NewGame+ with her. I want to keep her decisions just the way they are for ME3.

I don't know. Legion is made up of 1183 individual consciousnesses. Him dying is like wiping out a small city.

Did you do Mordin's Loyalty quest? That's the only reason I can think of for him not surviving that fight.

Everyone survived for me as well.

Tech/shaft: Legion

Squad leader: Garrus

Biotic: Jack

Squad Leader: Jacob

Escort: Mordin

I had Miranda and Tali with me the entire way through. Also I love Miranda telling off TIM at the end.

Lost Thane (vent monkey), Zaeed (squad 2 leader 2nd time, and then Mordin for no good reason, and a good chunk of my crew.

Jack was awesome as the biotic barrier maker, and Garrus and Tali stayed right at my side at all times.

Better question: How many people can you get killed and still make it out alive?

I kinda want my Sole survivor Shepard to make a repeat performance.

First play I messed up on a couple choices and lost Legion and Mordin as a result. Just finished my second play-through, and everyone is alive.

Everyone survived on my first playthrough. I not that happy with that, some of my crewmates deserve to die.

I'm having trouble with this one for some reason...the first time i went through it 2 of my party members died (tali and thane) so i loaded my game, upgraded my ship and this time i survived......so im going through the mission and i meet up with my "distraction" (jack) and the dumb **** gets shot and dies..now here's what i don't get; supposedly to have everyone survive you need 1. all the ship upgrades and 2. loyalty with all party members.....ok now's the confusing part; EVERYONE was loyal and had the ring below their feet in the party members screen...except miranda; i had previously gained her loyalty by doing her personal mission but the ring disappeared when i chose subject zero instead of miranda for the romance (i like tattooed freaks, what can i say?):alien:....so why did jack die instead of miranda?? why did any of them die at all!! makes no sense....i want my 75 gamerscore damnit...

Yeah, I did everything you could do, except maybe a couple of mission you find on planet scans.  To give you an idea, it was my first play and I hit 30 just before going to the final battle.

We just about all lived, apart from Zaeed, but I think it was fitting. But I thought it was rather fitting, one crew member, torn up in a past of cruelty and hatred, redeeming himself by saving humanity.

Oh, and I'll just say the was pretty epic.

He says that, but he also says that the Geth are one collective intelligence which does not understand the concept of individuality.  So it's not really the same thing as killing 1183 separate people.

If you choose Mordin to go through the shaft then I believe he always dies, because he can't get the door closed.  If you meant that he died at the very end, then the issue is probably that you chose "defend the door" rather than "we better move quickly" (this is admittedly a counterintuitive outcome, but when you choose "move quickly" you take a squad of three to fight the end boss while everyone else defends the door).

Re: sending Mordin through the vents: Mordin is a biologist.  It never even occurred to me to send him for what was clearly an engineer's job.  Tali and Legion are the obvious choices.  I find it weird that so many people (not mcsupersport) complain about Mordin failing at that job.

He died defending the second door, the one after you pass with the biotic in the bugs.  Legion did the tube/door run and made it fine.  Mordin died during the final battle with the "reaper baby" at the end.  I don't know how he died, or why, just saw his corpse on the ground as we were heading to the Normandy.

That happened to me too, so my second playthrough I sent him with the crew back to the Normandy.

Yeah, sorry, I realized that was probably what you meant after I posted and edited my post (not quick enough!).

Did you choose "defend the door" or "move quickly" before the last battle?

First run-through made it to level 28 (guess this is what I get for being too lazy to re-do ME1 to 60), and only lost Garrus as the vent specialist.  Meh.  I, like others apparently, figured it would require a mix of stealth, tech, and combat, and of all the options available I figured he was the most capable.

For the rest I had Miranda as team leader both times, Grunt as crew escort (though in retrospect I think this would have pissed him off for making him miss out on the final stand), and Samara as the biotic shield.  And then I blew the station up in a glorious explosion.  Telling the Illusive Man where he could shove it afterwards was the final and delicious icing on the cake.

Did it again, this time sending Legion through as vent monkey and Zaeed as crew escort for the hell of it.  Everything went fine.  Personally I hope ME3 lets you strike out on your own.  Getting sick of all these idiots putting leashs on you and treating you like crap (I'm looking at you Turian-Councilor-even-though-I-saved-your-scaly-ass-you-bastard).

I honestly don't know, I have chosen "move quickly" all 3 times I've done the final mission.  I thought that might be it.

If it's not that, then I have no idea.

And picking whether to defend the door or to move quickly doesn't make any inherent difference for survival. I picked that both times and everyone there survived. Must be something else.

finally, after 2nd attempt got everyone alive... 1st attempt Mordin dies. Below is my config for 2nd attempt

Tech Specialist : Tali

Squad Lead 1: Garrus

Escort: Mordin (figured i better get rid of him since he died later on in my 1st attempt)

Biotic: Samara

Squad Lead 2: Garrus

My final squad to face reaper: Thane/Jacob (figured they were the weakest and will probably not be useful for the 2nd squad in defending the door)
