Hell, that IFF thing came out of nowhere. I was trying to go to the Citdel for Thane and Garrus when that happened. I guess that's why BioWare said it might be "hard" to save everyone on your first playthrough, you might get blindsided with that kidnapping.kraidy1117 wrote...

We all lived. Including my kidnapped crew.
It is not hard. As long as you do Legions quest after you get the reapers IFF before the crew is kidnapped you can go right through the Omega 4 relay to save them. Also this is how my team was organsied and everyone was loyal.
door opener: Legion
Strike leader: Miranda
Biotic protector: Samara
crew member guard: Grunt
Diversion team leader: Garrus
I brought Miranda and Mordin with me to vs the human-reaper and everyone survived, including my kidnapped crew.
I had the strike leader as Samara. I actualy like Miranda, but that's
despite her controlling attitude. Samara saw more battle than all of us
combined I imagine. Even Miranda liked the choice. I wonder if that got Legion killed tho.
Everyone was loyal. Legion was the one in the shaft, and I think that made sense, so I
assume it was because I didn't upgrade the weapons enough. I didn't get
Legion's sniper, for one.
Now, I've gotten the sniper and am
working on upgrading everything. Should work. That said, if the only
way I can have a save where the whole crew is rescued is to start over,
I will.

Ohhh. I was wondering why Jacob died after opening the door... I guess I need a full tech
Yeah, there are 2 ideal people for each job, I believe.
My experience was:
Legion - Ducts
Garrus - Fire Team Lead
Samara - Bioshield
Garrus - Fire Team Lead
Grunt - Escort
All survived.
p.s. Having Tali/Legion as your squadmates is great. As is Mordin/Grunt. I was surprised there was little to no banter between Miranda/Jack during missions. I always like the more entertaining rather effective squads.

Tech Specialist - Legion [love Shepherd's comment to him when he opens the door/saves everyone]
Fire Team lead - Garrus
Biotic Specialist - Samara
2nd part:
Escort - Jacob
Fire Team lead - Garrus
My party - Miranda/Tali
No one lost. Full loyalty on everyone. Saved all of my crew.
While I will probably try a speed play w/o loyalty missions, it just defeats the purpose of the game to me. The RPer in me loves knowing my team-mates are devoted, not just "along for the ride"
Again, my only gripe is I really don't like the "forced" timing of the IFF mission to the kidnapping. I wish you could delay the installation of the IFF so you could experience Legion alot more. Such an amazing character.

I had Legion fully upgraded sniper rifle and all and he still died. Was it my choice of Samara as the first fire team leader? She was easily the biggest badass of them all. It seemed like an easy choice to have her lead the team.
You have to think in terms of what each person "specializes" in - Samara has been a lone-gun for a long long time and isn't exactly strong on leadership. Hence why she'll not be too hot for any of the Fire Team assignments, but if you choose her for Biotic specialist? She's pretty much the best one next to Jack.

Definitely going to do a New Game + so I can beat the game with my team and crew. Normandy's too quiet without the crew.

True, but she's also calm under pressure, has tons of experience, and is used to commanding respect. Miranda agreed with my choice.

I'm definately trying that on my next playthrough!

Didn't use an escort... I regret it because my kidnapped crew died. I completed the game in 22 hours and one minute. Everyone was loyal.
I did the exact same thing except I had Jacob lead the crew and everyone lived

I hear you, but when you think of "leader" she doesn't stand out anywhere as much as someone like Garrus or Jacob would and the game obviously agrees.

With all squadmates loyal, except Jack, I assaulted the Collector base, and ended up losing only Jack when I assigned her to the diversion team for the second stage.
With the same savegame profile, in a different runthrough with all squaddies loyal except Jack, I lost Garrus and Samara during the second stage. Jack failed in keeping the biotic barrier up long enough to get everyone through the door, at which point Garrus got taken away from me. At the same time, because of the delay and the reduced squad performance, I lost Samara in the diversion squad.
It seems that role qualities of the characters also play a major factor in how well the teams survive. Example: Tali, Samara, Jack, and some others are NOT ideal leaders, and can get the squad killed. Whereas on the other hand, assigning someone like Jacob who has experience leading Alliance military squads to the auxilary squad, can guarantee better survival odds, even if your regular fireteam loses a squad member. (I tested this in a slightly different scenario with Jack as the biotic barrier escort, and Jacob as the auxilary FT lead. Jacob and his team survived, but lost a squadmate in my team because of Jack's wimpiness)
When I ran a second playthrough of the second phase, this time with the entire squad loyal, and having gone after the Collectors immediately after the Normandy raid, I assigned Jacob to the auxilary squad, Samara as the biotic escort, and picked Grunt and Legion as my primary squadmates for that stage. All survived.
Survival is the easiest part. Losing them all is even easier if you consciously make ill-fitting choices for your team's roles, with the entire team with none of their loyalty missions completed. Like assigning Grunt as the infiltrator, who can't hack his way out of a cardboard box, and assigning Legion as the auxilary squad leader (which, without any real trust towards Shepard, would create a problematic situation), and assigning any lower-level Biotic as the escort. The Asari are the most powerful biotics in the Galaxy, statistically speaking, so it's natural to pick Samara.
I'm going to do a playthrough test with all squad members loyal to me, in the second stage, to see if they will accept Legion as an auxilary squad leader, without any casualties.

Gonna restart with the same ME1 import, as ME2 import is useless. Gotta save the crew.

Samara - Biotic Specialist
Garrus - First Squad Leader
Garrus - Second Squad Leader
Jacob - Escort
Took Garrus and Thane to the final fight - deadly combo against the last boss. Somehow, Mordin died. All squaddies were loyal and I -think- I'd done all of the upgrades. I know I did Mordin's omni-tool, and I don't really get why he died.

Actually, if I had been able to find Legion to activate it in the first place, I would definitely have done the loyalty quest before the IFF. Took ahile to find Grunt too. Why is there no way to find out exactly where inactive squadmates are on the ship? I guess I should have looked harder.

You get Legion when you do the IFF quest. After you get the IFF, you get two missions' worth of time before the Collectors come to kick you in the quad.

Maybe theres a luck factor involved?
*edit* Nvm for some reason i thought you meant for the 2nd squad leader.

I tought I might have gotten that confused. I meant before the kidnapping. At any rate, gotta restart, because I don't have a save far back enough to change that.NKato wrote...

There are two main factors: The characters' suitability for the roles you pick for them, and their loyalty. The loyalty determines how willing they are to go the full distance. Example, a non-loyal Samara in the biotic escort role will fizzle out just before the doors during the second stage of the attack, while a loyal Samara will gather up her strength to do a "biotic blast shield" that basically pushes all of the enemies away and gives the squad breathing room to get inside and seal it shut.

I figured that if he won't be to effected by being in the vents and he was a strong tech person so he was the natural choice. He opened the door and didn't get killed.
Strike leader: Garrus
Someone I could trust and I knew he had experience in both leadership and combat so he was the natural choice.
Biotic protector: Jack
The most powerful human biotic ever encountered? I figured if anyone could hold up the shield it would be her.
Crew member guard: Zaeed
I figured he had enough combat experience to make sure everyone got out okay and I was right.
Diversion team leader: Garrus
Same reasons as above.
The end result was that everyone lived, except the one person that made it all possible, Mordin RIP.

I made it out with two people not loyal.... what is the lowest James?
The known constant of the least amount of loyal teammates needed is 4. However, there is a theory that you can survive the mission with only 3, but you will sacrifice the crew in doing so.
Have fun figuring it out
