(posted in the Steam forums as well, I really need help with this...)

I've decided to get back into the first game since the second's out now,
but it doesn't want to launch on my computer. All it does is get to
the launch screen with the logo before the game actually starts, and
hangs there, consuming RAM but doing nothing.

I think this is due to Windows 7; last time I played I had Vista and
everything was fine.

Windows 7 Home Professional 32 bit
Intel Core 2 Duo CPU, 2 GHz
3 GB memory, 1 GB VRAM
ATI Mobility Radeon HD 3650
DirectX 10

I've tried running Steam as administrator, running ME as administrator,
patching, reinstalling, compatibility, UAC off, restarting my computer,
everything I can possibly think of. Nothing works.

Help would be greatly appreciated... :(

Go to the windows site and update Direct X. This was a problem for numerous games after people updated to 7 from Vista.

EDIT:  Actually I'm seeing on other forums that that didn't fix Mass Effect.  It did work for other games.  If you have anyway of reinstalling directX I would try it.

I am in a similar situation, I also wanted to replay ME1 again to refresh my memory before I go get ME2, I kept my save files, so I just planned to play from them.

Installed, launched and got into the game. Then 5 minutes later the game slowed to a crawled and froze for about 30 secs to 1 minute. Normal for the next 5 minutes and the same thing happened!

This never happened before. I am still using the same machine. Only difference is that my OS is not a W7 instead of VISTA.

I tried uninstalling, reinstalling, patch to 1.02, switch off all unnecessary process via Task Manager, lowered the graphics setting to low. Even changed the compatibility back to VISTA SP2.

Still the same problem... :crying:

My system specs:

Dell XPS 1730
Intel® Core™ 2 Extreme CPU x7900  @ 2.80GHz
RAM 4GB
NVIDIA GeForce 8700M GT  VRAM 256 MB
Driver version 195.62
SigmaTel High Definition Audio CODEC vers. 6.10.5614.0

Windows 7 Ultimate 32
DirectX 10.0 (Mar 2009)

I hope Bioware and EA still help ME1 owners.

any ideas? this seems to appear at the beginning of logs where I did manage to play, though, but the ones after I had Windows 7 all stop here.

I'm having the same problem for ME1, used to have no problems at all... Now it's taking an unusual amount of time between the EA logo and Bioware logo and finally it freezes.

googling "Failed to load 'Material None.': Failed to find object 'Material None.'" brought up some people with problems with their sound card, but I both upgraded mine and then disabled it, and yet nothing worked again...

my graphics drivers are fully updated too...I think it might be a driver issue though...

I used to have Bring down the sky addon however the game couldn't find the files (can't find module...) redownloaded it to see if it had any effect, Sadly it didn't allow me to play the game in full screen however it works fine now in Windowed mode.

Such a strange phenomenon as I can play ME2 in full screen without any problems... :pinched:
