So I am playing ME for the first time and I am currently running an Engineer. Just got Spectere status. I read that its best not to put points into charm or intimidate so I havent. I also have both BDtS and Pinnacle Station. I plan on doing all the missions I can.

I am just wondering if it is worth it when I am finished to do a second playthrough with my character first before transfering to ME2? Like I said I havent put any points into charm or intimidate because I was planning on doing a second playthrough. Aside from story element choices is there anything I should do before transfering my character?

Seeing that you only get bonus xp and starting cash spending extra time on ME1 is moot, unless you want to make different decisions

Also your points reset on a second play through of ME1 (Even with the same character). Allowing you to reallocate at your choosing, same for all your team.

It is a huge mistake to not put points into charm or intimidate, that's when all the decisions are made, if you're paragon DUMP points into charm and if you're renegade then go intimidate. This is the defining mechanic of the game, do not make the mistake of glossing over it for a weapon proficiency or something. - Cheers

Okay,so would it be worth it to restart my character now to put points into charm or intimidate so that I can make choices using those?

Edit- Gah missed the previous post! That answers that... I guess I will start over!

You do get certain bonuses for using an ME1 character that has certain stats when you transfer them, but I don't recall having charisma or intimidate maxed out as providing one of those bonuses.
One of the main bonuses my ME1 character gave me was more starting credits since they were rich, so sell lots of junk and max out your credits in ME1 :) Seems a lot harder to get credits in ME2 so it's worth starting out with as much as possible.

Okay definitely sounds like you don't get anything extra for playing through a second time So I'll stick to 1 play through after I create a new game. Thanks for the help every one.

Your squadmates'  talents do reset, but not the PC's.

I always see it like this:

- If you put your points in social skills, you'll get the conversation options and thus a wider range of choices; on the other hand, your combat skills will be reduced.

- If you don't put your points in social skills, you'll miss conversation options but as a trade-off your combat skills will be improved.

Here's the thing though. If your character is weaker in combat, you can make up for it but putting more effort into it as a player. If your character can't access the conversation options, no amount of training or experience on the part of you, as a player, can make up for it.

So it just makes more sense to me to invest heavily in conversation skills.

Just to clarify...

At certain points in the game your Intimidate and Charm go up by 1 point for free.

This only happens a few times.

When you finish the game it creates a "special endgame save".

This save goes into a list of "special endgame saves" that can be found under the "Import existing ID" section on the character creation screen.

"Import existing ID" lets you pick one of your "special endgame saves" to start a new game with Shepard having all the stats and equipment he/she had when the "special endgame save" was created.

Therefore, it is only worth not putting points into Intimidate and Charm if you intend to do multiple runthroughs with the same character as you gain free points in them.

This lets you use the points you get for leveling up, for something else.

So do you think it is worth it to do two playthroughs to get my charm and intimidate points for free to then transfer to ME2?

That really depends on you to be honest.

If you're going to do several runthroughs to get your character to level 60 then it might be worth it.

To be honest, even though I got my character to 60 after 3 playthroughs, I didn't really bother with the whole "not putting points in to gain free ones" thing, and I never had any problems missing out on the skills I couldn't get because of it.

Well ME1 has two possible endings, each of them having a paragon or renegade version of it. I won't spoil them for you, you'll have to figure them out yourself ;)

I did four playthroughs to get one character per ending. And yes, I defintiely think that it's worth it to max out either charm or intimidate (but only choose one!).

points placed in charm and intimidate are not returned upon starting a new game+

depending on how many times you plan on playing the game, you could potentially max both your charm and intimidate skills without placing any points into them at all.

you gain a skill rank each time you become a spectre and I think up to 2 more ranks upon reaching a certain level of charm or intimidate. It is possible to max out both charm and intimidate rather quickly through the use of a certain dialogue bug. So a total of 3 skill ranks can be earned for charm and intimidate with each play-through.

I had chosen to max out both charm and intimidate in ME1 because I like having both options available to me. Paragon and Renegade are not necessarily good and evil choices. I felt that some responses were more appropriate for certain situations in the game and I liked being free to make those choices as I saw fit. This is why I am so happy they combined the skill in ME2

First of all you points never reset, Second you can earn 4 free points of charm and intimidate a play through. You get one of each when you gain spectre status, and you gain one of the apropriate type when your Paragon or Renegade meter reaches 10%, 25%, and 75% at the same time as unlocking ranks you can buy normally. So if you are going for perfect builds never put points in either. Personally I don't care about having none of the options having been through the game so many times. However if it's your first play through then absolutely spend points in them worry about perfect characters later. there is only one time you need charm of 11 or higher (and you never need intimidate of over 10) and that option comes up so early that most players won't be able to legitimately have enough paragon rating to have unlocked 11 ranks of charm.

As the others have said, you gain free points in Charm and Intimidate everytime you play through the game, so if you're planning to do multiple playthroughs on the same character, you could essentially get 24 free talent points just by not putting any points into those two skills. If you're trying to create a 'perfect' character, those extra 24 points will go a LONG way...

That said, it seems that ME2 isn't concerned with skill ranks etc. when you import a save game; the decisions you made are what affects the game most (and even then, I hear that the differences are fairly minor in the large scheme of things).

Well I guess it is worth another playthrough but In ME2 I read that if you have a ME1 save you start as a level 5 and not as one.

for the ME2 character, your major choices are saved, NPCs from ME1 quests make appearances (if you didn't kill them), and you get bonuses to cash and resources based on your level.

Not to mention consequences in ME3.
