Be forewarned, there are some negative statements here, but please don't interpret them as complaining.
This is intended as a critique. There is no emotion, only logic. <does Vulcan salute> "Live long and prosper".
Overall, the improvements to the game are quite nice. I enjoy the addition of RPG elements, especially the manner in which you can choose to decorate Shepherd's apartment with pets and models.
Soldier class
As personal preference, I play this class only. I've always had a preference for the heavy guns/multiple weapons/endurance classes. In a game like ME, where I'm actively indulging my RP tendencies, I don't like to make more then one character anyway.
I quite enjoy the addition of the "ammo powers" changing the type of beam firing.
The ability to give all my squadmates (at least the ones who can use it) Collector rifles is great. I thought there would be only one.
However, in comparison to ME1, the weapons are less efficient (in terms of gameplay).
My Collector rifle keeps running out of heat sinks if the battle is longer then 1 or 2 engagements. While I was defending Garrus, it ran out and I had to resort to using a pistol. In ME1, with some clever modification, I could maintain a constant firerate, because the weapon never heated up.
I don't even dare to use my Blackstorm cannon, because 1 shot (2 at best) and it's out of ammo. This doesn't even make sense to me, the Blackstorm is generating a blackhole, not shooting a rocket.
And I have no idea where to buy more ammo.
It appears they never implemented the feature to "discard" weapons. As I have stated in the past, I only use specific weapons and ignore the rest, because they don't suit my gameplay style.
In this case, I only use Assault Rifles and the Blackstorm cannon. It's getting quite annoying when the CR runs out of heatsinks, I'm randomly switched to some other weapon, whatever that is. And the worst thing is, half the time when this happens, the Collector Rifle is not out of heatsinks and I have to switch back to it in the middle of pitched battle.
Which leads to my next weapon related issue, the switching. The mouse wheel is not efficient, because I have to cycle through several weapons to get it back. And I don't like having to pause combat to play with the HUD. ME2 was optimized so you could deliver commands in realtime, yet there are no hotkeys for weapon switching.
Basically, I'd prefer to alternate between 2 ARs and the Blackstorm cannon.
To conclude my lecture about the Soldier class, I'm beginning to suspect ME2 is designed around Biotic or Tech Powers and the soldier class was an afterthought.
Judging from the gameplay videos, it appears most combat revolves around using those powers and rarely touching the gun. And I found it suspicious that in the release order of those videos, soldier was last, indicating that it was not a priority.
Also, the lack of useful powers in this class is also suspicious. In ME1, I'd be using Resistance to buff my shields/health regen and Shredder to improve accuracy. In ME2, the powers aren't that interesting to me personally, a concussive shot and time slow is about all there is.
The hacking is a mixed bag.
On the one hand, I quite enjoy the code matching form of hacking.
But the matching pins type is really annoying me now. You can't even memorize the pattern, because it randomly changes each time. And even when I get the pin pairs right, I have to click 3 times, because there's some kind of incredibly short time limit to match them up. Assuming it works at all, most often then not, the mouse misses.
And I've never been fond of timer puzzles anyway. I prefer thinking solutions, not reaction tests. Mainly because part of my brain is screaming at me "the timer! watch the timer! you're almost out of time!".
This is really annoying me now, because I'm stuck in a room with 3 locked doors and it appears I have to do a pin puzzle to get out.
Well, if anyone's still reading this, thanks for sitting with me while I vent my spleen.
