One of the biggest improvements I've seen in ME2 is the motion animation. The improvements really do improve the overall cinematic quality of the game.
Only an hour or so into her first playthrough, my wife's Shepard walked into a large club (think Chora's Den, but bigger). After a quick sweep of her surroundings, she looked up and focused on an asari... performing a lively dance routine with a pole. Though asari don't really do it for her, we were both staring at the asari with awe. My wife circled around a bit, still watching.
Me: "Do you suppose they paid an exotic dancer to come in and do motion capture for them?"
Her: "Oh yeah. A pretty good one, too."
I hadn't been putting much thought into game production at that point (just enjoying it), but I can only believe that it was done through motion capture. It's probably the most lifelike movement I've seen in any video game. Now, I'm sure it wasn't hard to get someone to do that animation (things you will never hear: "I have to animate an asari stripper? Another one? Why don't I ever get to animate the Elcor!") and I imagine whoever did it had plenty of people willing to help him get it just right, but the quality is just so much higher than other video games. Only movies do it better.
Of course, after looking around more of the club, we found something that stopped her in her tracks a second time: yet another instance of shockingly good motion. It was so expressive that there was no question in my mind:
Me: "So... do you suppose they paid a midwest white girl to come in and do motion capture for them?"
Her: "Maybe they convinced an intern to do it. Gave them free lunch or something."
Me: "Maybe its actually one of the developers."
Now, I'll feel bad (only a little) if those two dancers (you'll know the one's I'm talking about) are motion captured off of Christina Norman or Jesse Hudson, but they are amazing in... being whatever it is they are. It was just so compelling. I found myself wanting to know more about them: "Are they on space drugs?" "Can they actually hear the music?" "Are they dancing like that because there are no mirrors around?" It was fascinating. I want to give them names and have Drew write books about them. Secretly, I like to believe that Chris Priestly did the motion capture, but I know this is a false hope and don't want it to be dashed.
More seriously: After that, I started watching the motion more closely. It really is good. The animators did an excellent job. Am I correct in believing that Bioware did loads of motion capture for this?
Motion Capture (no spoilers I promise)
