First I want to say that I hate third person shooters (just ask my friends who I have ranted at regarding games such as Dead Space and Gears of War)...
Now we come to ME2... Third person shooter...hmmmm yeah... but the main thing is the story. The thermal clips come about due to reverse engineering the geth weaponry. Anyone remember Nirali Bhatia's (spelling probably wrong) wounds? The alliance engineers were trying to find a way of improving the Alliance weaponry and they upped the power of the weapons which caused more heat to be generated. Bit like how early PC's didn't need a fan and when they got faster it ended up that we needed a huge copper heat sink and fan on multi-GHz cpu's.
It hints of this in the Codex... but I guess the people who play the game as an RPG neglected to read it.
The combat is WAY more fun than the original... and this is Mr Neo "I hate third person shooters" Morph talking here. It just seems to gel more.
I do mourn the loot harvesting though... one of the things making you come back for more is wanting to see if you can get the Rage armour for Wrex or the Collossus X armour for everyone. Removing the fact that you can't find a new armour suit out in the field and immediatly put it on is VERY RPGish though... Can you imagine going into a firefight and then shouting to the enemy "TIME OUT... I WANT TO TRY THIS OTHER ARMOUR ON, OK?".
