I normally consider myself a bright guy, but I have not figured out how to read the HUD during combat.

Ok, when everyone's in tip-top shape, there's nothing special.  All I've got is my weapon status (reloads, etc), and the two icons for my squad mates in the center.

Now, during combat, I see three graphics appear:

1) An overarching graphic that I think represents my own shield and maybe health.  It is arcs over the two squad member pictures.  But, whicl I see it go from red to blue when my shields recharge, I haven't seen anything to show me my health status, except when it gets all bloody and vein-like.

2) A stretched quarter-circle to the side of the squad member icon.  I think that means that they are taking damage?  I assume it has something to do with their shield, but see nothing to indicate relative levels of shield or health.

3) A line underneath a squad member.  I think this indicates powers being used, but, again, it doesn't shift, change, move, shrink, or anything.

4) As a side note, I only get a radar screen when I pause the game with the power bar?

The manual didn't seem to be clear on it, and, if it was, the pictures are too darn small for my old eyes.  ;)

Can someone help me understand what the HUD is telling me?

Thanks.

The overarching graphic is your shields only. It will recharge if you are in cover.

The quarter circle is your health bar I believe.

The line under the squad is their biotic power status.

There is a quarter circle that can pop up next to each squad member. I never see it different than a quarter circle. Am I missing some subtlety?

The only one Ive been able to figure out is my sheild. The rest is the opposite of intuitive and I have no clue what they mean or represent. I'd much prefer the old HUD as it was clean, clear and didnt cover part of my character.

Yeah.. the old HUD was very straightforward. Bar for shield, bar for health. The only thing that confused me there was the missile graphic when I was in the Mako. I never did understand why it was there.

So... how does Shepard's shield graphic work? I didn't seem to deplete, but.. I don't know. maybe I just stink and always took a boatload of damage. Not dying, though.

Either we're all confused about it... or, this drops off the page too quickly.

the blue half circle is Shepherd shield, when the shield is depleted the half circle turns red and represents your life instead. the bar(s) next to your squad mates head tells you that their powers are recharging, its only an on/off thing (if there is a bar powers are charging, no bare power extravaganza ^_^ ) the qurter circel represents that their shields are depleted and they are taking damage.

So... no way, then, to tell how close to death a squad mate is?

It's not just the HUD that's iving me problems.

I don't exactly have a high def TV. So when status and mission updates appear in the bottom right I have absolutely no idea what it's saying. The font is too small. Even when I wear my glasses that usually sit on my dashboard for driving and sit less than 6 ft away from the screen, it's still illegible. And when The conversation wheel comes up in front of anything that isn't solid black, that too is unreadable.

C'mon, Bioware. Help a cheap-ass gamer out!

Wow... that never even occurred to me. Was ME1 any better? The wheel looks about the same to me.

As far as I have understood it the blue/purple half circle (depending on class - shield or barrier) represents your shields. It becomes visible as soon as you start taking damage. When it depletes the half circle turns red and represents your life. You have to look at it percentage wise. So a quarter circle would mean you have about half shields/life left.

The quarter inner circles represtens the shields/ life or your squad members. There is no indication how much shield/life they have left but rather you see they take damage to their shields if the quarter circle is white/yellow (whatever type of shield your squadmember has) or take damage to heir life if it is red.

The bar under the quarter circles and your squadmembers pictures represents the power cooldown of your squadmembers. As long as they are not able to use another power the bar is visible.

The two semi circles which come together at your aim represent your
power cooldown. Once they meet in the middle and vanish you are are
able to use another power.

Well... that's what I figured out by looking at some videos (still waiting for my game).

Ah! Ok... I'm too busy killing things, I guess. I never noticed my mates' shields going red.

The half-circles representing my own next-power cooldown... I didn't pick that up at all. I only noticed it when switching to anti-synth ammo. I don't recall seeing that after my Adren skill or the concussion shot. I'll look for closely next time.

Is it just me, or is this stuff simply not documented in game or in the manual?

Thank you all for the help on a hair pulling topic. The info is not documented well in the manual. It is there, but very poorly described. Masterkajo, which videos?

This is what I was going to ask about and what I'd guessed it meant.

Because they've changed the health system - you only need medigel to resurrect downed squadmates - there's no need for life bars, but I'm finding it hard to track my squads status and whether they're dead or alive. I guess we're supposed to wait for the prompt to use Unity.

I really can't imagine the thought processes that went into concluding that the new HUD was somehow a good idea. On my screen there's plenty of real estate in the corners that isn't being used for anything, and could provide always-on radar or vaguely intuitive damage meters.of some sort, but instead they omit most of that information and put the stuff they do include in the middle of the screen?
