Ok I am pretty shocked at the moment and still trying to figure out, what to do. Things went pretty wrong this evening.. (..and I guess one could call "pretty wrong" still an understatement to what had happened)

I installed the game (ME2 - Collectors Edition) 2 hours ago only to find out that I had unintentionally installed the german version of the game. The sales info on the ME2 - Collectors Edition (amazon.com) stated, that one could play the game in either german or english. Now, don't get me wrong, my german skills are supposedly superior than my english skills (or so I hope), but honestly, translated games rarely live up to the original game and whenever I have the chance to, I play games in the original release/language.

Looking through ingame and launcher options of ME2 I wouldn't find an option to switch to "english text and dialogue", so I finally decided to uninstall ME2 - my thought was, that I just had missed out the proper settings during the installation.

So to cut this short, I uninstalled ME2 via system control (Windows 7) ..not being aware that with running ME2 uninstaller both games ME1 & 2 got uninstalled(!) and my savegames of ME1 with it  (including my chars and my achievements). I guess all who have played several times through ME1 (3x times for me) can imagine how unamused I felt, when I suddenly found my ME1 save game folder completely missing.

So, what are my options now? I recovered some of my lost savegame files of ME1 via some freeware tool that did a search for deleted files. But those files seem to be incomplete. After reinstalling the game, ME2 wouldnt recognize them and wouldn't let me import any of my chars from ME1. (I checked that on my first time installation of ME2, and  was able to import them - but of course, my save game folder were unchanged/unharmed back then).

And if (big if) I ever succeed to restore my ME1 chars, (right now, due to the reasons stated above I am not quite in the mood to play ME2) ..what settings I have to change, to play the english game?

-cheers
beitel

(edit: added details on system/game)

Hey,

I was unable to repro this on my development machine (Windows XP) but I've notified our QA team and they will investigate as quickly as possible.

We have reproduced the issue internally on Windows 7: attempting to uninstall Mass Effect 2 from the Programs and Features section of the Windows 7 Control Panel runs the Mass Effect Uninstaller.

As a workaround, please uninstall the game by running Uninstall Mass Effect 2.exe from C:\\Program Files\\Common Files\\BioWare\\

This will uninstall Mass Effect 2 and not Mass Effect.

Also be aware that uninstalling from Add/Remove programs will also prompt you to remove your savegames. In the event that you *thought* it was ME2, you would perhaps click yes. This will remove your ME1 savegames. BEWARE!

This does NOT apply to steam builds.

another user reminded us of using windows shadow volumes to restore a lsot save game...

"i just thought i'd suggest using shadow volume backups to try recover your saves. the process is quite simple:

in your documents folder (make its the actual folder and not the library), right click > properties > previous versions. then select a version from a time before you uninstalled, click on it and click Open. then you can just copy the Bioware > ME1 folders into your current documents folder"
