How do you aim "pull" so that it hits enemies from the top and pulls them upwards?

Every time I use a biotic ability it hits enemies from the left or the right. On the preview for mass effect 1 I saw it curve upwards, hit an enemy on the top of the head and "lift" them up in the air.

i was wondering if the trajectory biotics was an automatic, context sensative thing or if it could be manually aimed by the player.

Ya I noticed that too, here's what I've found out from trial and error:

1) Every single biotic companion can use biotic abilities both instantly (no seek time), and through ANY solid object in the game. You cannot.

2) When I maxed out my first ability it then gained (some how/magically) the ability to go around corners, over obstacles, etc. It was Singularity- it was very nice after such a 'long' wait for the ability to work as displayed in all the pre-game movies.

Hope that helps. I'm not sure if it's a bug, or if BioWare/EA just wanted to show aspects of biotics which you CAN develop. Don't know. It's definitely misleading which adds to the annoyance ("but in the movie it shows my abilities will go AROUND things...why not now? why do my squad members get instant attack biotics that travel through any solid object and not me?")

Edit: I wanted to say it's STILL especially annoying when I'm in cover and use Warp or Singularity, aimed, and it hits the box I'm behind. What the heck was the point? Then I have to move out of cover to use the ability. Derp derp.

Never mind, i figured out how to do it and it's really easy and intuitive. I can't believe it took me so long to figure out how to do it. I think that I was just overthinking it. Once i realized how simple it is I was like "wow, they worked a really good system".
