Is it absolutely necessary to have Alistair?

Hi :)

I honestly don't care for Alistair that much. I find him really annoying, and if able to would more than happily leave him in camp the entire game.

Is this possible or am I pretty much going to lose out on a lot of in-game content because I don't let him tag along with me?

Thanks in advance.

Well, I mean you'll miss out on soem liens and extra dialogue here and there, but sure you can just leave him in camp. You'll get content with your preferred party members instead, which you would have missed had you taken Alistair.

I don't think you will lose out leaving him behind anymore than you would lose out by leaving another companion behind.

In short, feel free to leave him at camp.

If you don't like Alistair you may not care for this answer: even if you don't take him with you, you will still see a number of his scenes back at camp or at particular story points whether or not he is in your party.

You will miss a certain amount of his backstory in Redcliffe.

And as a character, he is one of only two good NPC tanks -- the two-handers Oghren and Sten are not really good substitutes in this role. So unless you are playing a sword-and-boarder yourself, ditching him will leave you very reliant on Shale.

Very reassuring. I had this bad feeling that I would be required to "bring him out" for certain parts of the main storyline considering his "role."

Thank you very much for the quick replies :)

I have finished the game without him being in my main party at all; or at least as soon as he was replaceable. There do seem to be some points where he is necessary for the main plot, but I don’t think you have to have him in your 4 person adventuring party.

Yeah you don't HAVE to have him in the party, if he is necessary for any of the plot points there will be some interaction with him at camp but thats about it.
