So I'm playing a Vanguard on Veteran, and I was wondering which of the three options in the collector ship I should go for. The Claymore Heavy Shotgun, Assault Rifle, or Sniper Rifle. I'm thinking AR, but I just wanted some input.

It depends what type of Vanguard you play. I thought that I would primarily use my Heavy Pistol from Range and Shotgun up close, but once I got the first Heavy Pistol upgrade with the much smaller ammo clip, I started to use every weapon based on the situation.
I typically start off with the SMG and put a few rounds into people from a distance, especially if they have a Shield or Barrier. If those go down and there is armor, I switch to my Pistol and Incendiary Ammo and take it out, and before I charge, I switch to my shotgun. I'll switch to the shotgun if I'm going to charge someone with a shield or barrier too, since it shreds right through them.
So, think about how you play your Vanguard and decide what's right for you. You may also want to take into consideration the weapon upgrades you have researched and not researched at this point.

Wow I thought soldier was the only class that had access to AR (which I didn't like). Do Vanguards and Sentinels get AR from almost the beginning or only after you've gotten the choice to pick one out of three?

The ar is great however its accuracy suck,so for mid to longe range encounters use burst fire. It is great though in cqb.

I like having the Assault Rifle with my Vanguard. It gives me a little distance and a little extra power over the SMG. But, I always keep a sniper in my crew. If you usually run around without a sniper I would advise going for the sniper training.

Looked around and saw that advanced weapon training is an upgrade that let's you use a normal weapon that your class can't normally use? Can someone tell me at what point in the game one gets that?
If I had know we get that I'd have played an adept.

You get the option while visiting the collectors ship, its the same part where you first discover that protheans are the collectors or vice versa whatever you like best.

The Claymore isn't what it's cracked up to be. It doesn't do nearly enough extra damage, in my opinion, to warrant the one-shot magazine. I'd go with assault rifles, myself. Loves me that battle rifle and geth assault rifle.

Playing on a higher difficulty level, it's nice to open up an extra weapon that the class is not traditionally capable of using, if only from the perspective of having an extra fallback weapon if your "main" guns run out of clips.

I took assault rifles on my vanguard and don't regret it. The Vindicator Battle Rifle is both precise and far-reaching, excellent for dropping shields off of multiple enemies at a distance and softening them up for the charge + combat shotgun combo the vanguard is meant for.
Also you will find that you are less able to use your shotgun in Insanity difficulty due to the speed at which you die outside of cover and having an assault rifle to pick off enemies from behind a chest-high-wall is helpful.

Insanity is far from impossible.
I played a shuriken vanguard, that only used the shuriken machine pistol and heavy pistols (usually the predator), and I only had trouble in a couple of missions.
Did take sniper rifle training, but never actually used the viper.

I accidentally chose the sniper rifle and it wouldn't let me change it on my second playthrough...

I chose the AR myself, got me out of a few tough situations for my Vanguard on Insanity. The Cerberus Eviscerator shotgun worked the best for me when charging in. Deals good damage, almost as effective as the Claymore I believe, but having never used it myself I can't say for sure.

I took the revenant, it's perfect for mowing down herds of husks.

I chose the shotgun on my run as a vanguard on veteran, but would choose the AR training on insanity because I keep running out of ammo on insanity.

The fully upgraded ARs are like automatic sniper rifles...

I think i'll also go with the ar, but aren't sniper rifles better for long distances???

They can work well up close too, once you get use to scoping so close or shooting from the hip and when you hit you hit, I swear I've had shotgun blasts that had man shaped holes in the center. There is a SR with a large clip that's pretty good for lots of shots but I remeber it's damage not being the best so add an ammo power.Lycans4ever wrote...

Assault Rifle by far. Vindicator is deadly even at long range. It eats ammo quite fast though, but still it is superior choice. Claymore is useless. It might pack a lot of punch, but it has only one shot per clip and accuracy is lacking. Cerberus Assault Shotgun is far superior. Almost as powerfull, 3 shots and quite decent accuracy.

Personally, I like sniper rifles. I use the first one available if I want more one shot kills, and for more barriers/shields I take the 2nd(Viper I believe). The second SR is almost like using an AR, but has better range and accuracy. It is good for killing shields at range, and then charging with SG.
The rifle for you is going to depend on your play style, and difficulty level. I get better headshots from SR, versus any other gun, and since they add 50% damage, that is a good thing.

I keep replaying my ME2 save, do you have to import a ME1 save to let you choose the weapon again on the Collector ship?
