I know that we can go back and do missions and things after we beat the game, but by that point it may be too late if I haven't done some loyalty missions etc.

So my question is, is there a defined point in ME2 like Virmire, that is the "point of no return" from there to conclusion.

My main concern is recruiting Legion, I have no idea where to find him, and I'm wondering if he joins in the eleventh hour kind of thing, or if you get him before that cutoff point. Any spoiler-free (regarding legion and the endgame) responses would be appreciated.

There is a cut off point. Don't worry about going to far. Eventually you're given a "Go pwn the collectors" or "Keep gather squad members" decision, hopefully you don't consider that a spoiler.

As for Legion, you can also recruit him first after the Reaper IFF mission, which is at a decent length in the game.
