I am 8 hours into the game with level 10 vanguard on veteran difficulty.

I would rather not restart the game since I have this much time invested but I have to say I am not loving the Vanguard class.  I think everyone knows the problem with Charge: it gets you killed.  You also have absolutely no powers when fighting boss type characters, charge does notthing to them and niether does shockwave.  I find myself fighting enemies, using my squamates abilities and about every 10 minutes remembering, 'oh yeh, I have abilities too'  because there's just no real good use for them.

When I picked this class I was imagning a character that could bust into a group of bad guys, drop a few of them real quick and then get the hell out of there.  This is not what I got.  But rather than give up and claim that the class is 'broken' I would like to know how to make this class useful.

If there is a proper way to play each class then I just cannot figure out how to play this one.  They style I was lead to believe would be effective is not.  Someone who has had success with the Vanguard on difficulty levels above normal please give me some guidance.

P.S.  2 ways in which Charge would be much more useful

1)  give us a limited period of high damage resistance right after charging in. This would mean you actually have time to kill something before being slaughtered by the enemies on either side of you.

2)  Turn charge into something that could be called Shift:  You use it, and you zoom ahead to your target but only for a few seconds during which time you leave your physical body behind in the place you shifted from.  Your phased self is immune to damage but your physical body can be killed very easy.  This would make the class more of a 'hit and run' type fighter that I personally thought the class was supposed to be

Again, I want this thread to be constructive.  We all know people are having trouble playing this class effectively and using biotics in general.  I would like to learn how to play this class better and not have to restart the darn game while being 8 hours in.  Thanks guys!

The first Charge fix would be the best. It's probably something they could patch too. Increase the Shield bonus to 100% and increase the duration from 4 seconds to 8 seconds. While you'll still be very vulnerable after a Charge, at the very least you have enough defense to kill a guy then dive behind cover.

Here's my Vanguard pointers (im level 15):

1.Upgrade Charge with the slow time option at level 4...it helps out tremendously....gives you a few seconds to shotty blast the enemies after a charge.

2.Cryo Ammo...insanely useful to a vanguard. Not only does it "Freeze" enemies...but if you get a few them together, you can charge in and bust them up.

3.Shockwave...also useful, it knocks multiple enemies off their feet.

Overall..the vanguard pretty much plays as "weaken them from a distance, then charge in and finish them off." If you charge in to start with, then yeah, youre gonna get killed. Just stay in cover, weaken them up some, take care of bosses, use your cryo ammo to freeze, shockwave for multiples, and save charges to finish off the enemies.

Flank your opponents, try to pick them off one by one. Upgrade your charge and cryo ammo asap, they're a real mean bunch together.

Also, anything the poster above me said.

using charge to flank enemy positions works fairly well too IME. Pick a flank with a few enemies and charge in. This will force the enemies to either break cover to deal with you (in which case your teammates can pick them off) or stay in cover while you shoot them in the back.

That's all I really need out of Charge.  As it stands now, if you charge an enemy that is near even one other enemy, you will probably die.

Also, has anyone gotten the second option for level 4 charge that gives you a large radius? I was thinking that might make charge more useful for handling more than one enemy and I heard the the 4 seconds of slow time you get from the other option are not really enough to get anything accomplished.

Agreed with neu, upgrade to level 4 heavy charge asap it makes the power much more useful and only use charge on solo enemies or 2 at the most. Soften em up with the smg to take down shield/barrior then charge in with the shotty. Also this class is very squad dependent I feel too. I almost always have someone on my squad with overload to help take care ofthe shielded guys first.

Shockwave is def a valuable power too. I have mine set to the wide evolve(not sure the name right now) to take out multiple guys in one pass. Def helps solo out some enemies and get them out of cover.

Overall I feel like I'm in the minority on these forums but I like the vanguard a lot. It's def a very tactical class but does come with it's rewards.

What are the rewards?  I can't help feeling I would jus tbe so much better at killing things with another class.

One more note...when using charge look for enemies behind cover. Most of the time u can charge + shotty then use their cover to regen b4 repeating.

Charge is probably one of the more tactically useful skills in the game. It gets your out of a pinch really good.

You should not be charging into a bunch of foes, though unless you really have balls and a deathwish. You should have your shotgun out as well, and aim for the torso. It makes the enemies falter.

The reason Charge is so good is because of its ridiculously small cooldown. Use that to your advantage.

I can't wait to complete my Infiltrator playthrough so I can import my main save as a Vanguard and start putting in work.

Yes, I agree the Vanguard is sorely underwhelming. I loved my Vanguard in ME1 with the added Singularity ability, even though I concede it was over powered.

I'm playing on insanity and the combination of biotic powers not affecting shielded enemies and the global cooldown (GDC) are really making this class a snorefest to play.

I'd like to be able to biotic charge a group of baddies then hit them with shockwave or pull right away. As it is now, I sit back under cover, shoot with my pistol, use my squad mates to take down the enemy shields then when there's one or two enemies left I can biotic charge and ....shoot my shotgun a few times. WOOO

How does it get you out of a pinch?  I'm looking for examples of claims to charges usefulness please.

Charge is useful when cornered: you can blast a few enemies straight out of your way. I'm getting attached to pull, though, especially when used on enemies with heavy weapons.

@prince

maybe it's just me but I find the class exciting to play. I get that feeling of "hell yah" after finishing off a mech or miniboss with a charge and slowmo shotty blast to the face. Very satisfying if u ask me. And yes I have died a few times but each time realized why and that I f***ed up then reloaded and cleaned house. they often mentioned this class as high risk high reward and I def agree with that. Some people just don't like that sort of playstyle though. Can't blame em, everyones dif.

Just to reiterate here, we are not talking about Vanguard on normal difficulty right? My charge doesn't seem to hurt mechs and minibosses right now on veteran difficulty

I would equip flamethrower heavy weapon and charge into a tight group to fireblast them to death.

This does require ability to withstand the dmg they dish out while u fireblast but having overload for "pre-charge" and concussion shot "post-charge" squad members should help out.

Yes I'm on veteran difficulty. Note that we're not charging a mech/boss that has full barrier/shield/armor...soften up first then charge when defenses are almost down. I also have my shotgun upgraded to +20% dam and +50% shield piercing(whatever it's called) and using incindiary ammo.

The weakness to this character is the glass jaw for sure. Close quarters combat is useless if you no chance in hell of lasting the short time you need to end it in. I agree an increases shield/DR would be really useful for the seconds after a charge so you can end the fight without getting dropped in an instant.

The global cool down sucks too because Charge would be so more useful if you could combine it with shockwave or area pull.

At Veteran and above you're just too damn squishy to be able to take on more than two enemies in a charge, which takes the fun out of Vanguard imo. I mean you shouldn't expect to live ALL the time when you charge a 2-3 enemies, but it'd be nice if it was at least possible.

Well I am definitely getting some good feedback and strategy here which is escatly what I was looking for. I thank you guys for that and hope we can keep it coming.

Is there really a chance that Bioware would actually patch the game to change a class? I mean how realistic is that? I do miss having that happen all the time in WoW but I'm thinking that when there's no multiplayer to have imbalance that they probably wouldn't care enough to do it.

I am running a level 7 Vangaurd on Veteran, it is very much as they say, high risk, high reward style of game play.

It fits my play style wonderfully. You need to think very tactically, team mates are very important as well as you move to hit them from the side.

As already being a high risk type of class, don't taking unnecessary risks to change it into suicide run class.

Useful info.

I went Vanguard because I liked it in ME1. So far, Vanguard did not seem like what I expected. I see now -- its definitely not my style.

Oh well, maybe starting the game over is in order. Or cheating.

The problem is there's too much damn risk. You think for a Vanguard charging two enemies, say a centurion and a normal and taking them out would be SOP for a Vanguard but it's not.

At least the way I see it the Vanguard is meant to be a visceral close quarters combat specialist. Not a chip them away and run in for the kill. You shouldn't have to be nearly as tactical when you're main tactic/advantage to sling ass loads of damage really close. Not saying it's a brainless class but it's not working as it should imo.
