When I picked this class I was imagning a character that could bust into a group of bad guys, drop a few of them real quick and then get the hell out of there.!

Thats exactly what the Vanguard excels at! Posted Image

I'm playing a Vanguard on the same difficulty setting as you, and I'm having no trouble at all, dispatching bosses, mechs or anything else..

First off, you have to understand that the Vanguard is the most SKILL BASED class of them all.  Not only do you have to know when to charge, but after you charge, you better be handy with the shotgun to be able to kill your enemies quickly and efficiently.

What I mean is, HEAD SHOTS!  Head shots makes charge much more efficient and deadly, because it increases the amount of damage inflicted tremendously, thus increasing your chance of survival as well.

I'll give you an example.  Some of the enemies have tech armor, along with armor/barrier that makes them harder to kill.

Charging and shooting them requires about 4 or 5 shots to kill them, if you shoot them in the chest.

Aiming at their head on the other hand, you can kill them in 2 shots..

This means that your chances of survival literally DOUBLES because they can't  shoot back when they're dead, and the faster you kill, the more enemies you can take down in a given span of time.

Another tip.

Use charge, not only to attack, but to RECHARGE SHIELDS and move around the battlefield.  Charge as an ability recharges very quickly and you don't have to stay in the same spot and take all of them on!

BTW, are you on the Xbox 360 or PC?

The Vanguard is probably a lot easier to play on the PC, because you can shoot far more accurately..  I couldn't even imagine pulling off a headshot after a charge on the 360, but then again, I suck with the gamepad Posted Image

At least the way I see it the Vanguard is meant to be a visceral close quarters combat specialist. Not a chip them away and run in for the kill. You shouldn't have to be nearly as tactical when you're main tactic/advantage to sling ass loads of damage really close. Not saying it's a brainless class but it's not working as it should imo.

The Vanguard class works just fine..

It's just shooter centric, in that it relies heavily on shooting accuracy and reflexes a lot to inflict the most amount of damage in a small amount of time..

Honestly, if you're not good at shooters, then the Vanguard will probably be a difficult class for you.

At first I was sad at what the Vanguard turned into but now that Iv got stuff leveled up its actually a really great class. I find that charge works great on people on the far side of a line of enemies and for stopping enemies from flanking you. I also gotten good about using charge to get behind a line enemies then tearing them up from behind.

I know Vanguard is shooter centric. That's why I chose it, I've been playing PC shooters since like CS 1.6, not as long as some of the old school dudes, and for playing that long I'm pretty mediocre to be perfectly honest. However I'm still good enough to hold my own quite well in most FPS's and can usually land somewhere in the top 5 pubbing it on TF2. The Vanguard still just seems too squishy to me.

This is what I'm hoping, when I get some Shotgun upgrades for damage and ammo, and some DR or increased armor kinda stuff I can actually play the class as I want too. As of right now only carrying 15 shotgun shells suuuuuuuuucks. I appreciate the RPG element in finding upgrades first, but I wish there was a way I could seek out the shotgun stuff.

I'm still wondering if anyone has gone the wide blast radius charge route. I'm now imagning using that in combination with the heavy weapon ice gun to knock out groups with a charge while they're frozen!

if they had another class with the biotic/weapons combo, i'd definitely try it and probably prefer it...but until then, I'll enjoy my Vanguard...

I've rethought my Vanguard since my previous post. I love her to much to abandon her (i.e. I won't restart game).

So, I've changed tactics substantially. Now, she's very dangerous.

I guess the new ME2 Vanguard is OK -- once I abandoned the play style used with the ME1 Vanguard.

How have you changed your tatics?  Any tips?

I was pretty unhappy with the new kamekazi style of play that the ME2 Vanguard. I ended up reimporting, restarting, and changing my class to Sentinel. The game is a lot more fun now.

The tankie play style Vanguard from Mass Effect is gone.A Vanguard in ME2 is the crazed kamekazi charging with the sword now. While I hate the new play style of ME2 Vanguards, I am sure others out there like them.

I like the idea behind the new vangaurd, but it just sounds as though you die to soon to do anything and that charges effects other than transport are useless.

My theory was you'd charge up on a guy, knck him down and then blast him point blank with a shotgun. Sudden and violent combat.

Playing ME that might have worked but foes are so much denser now  you won't get a lot of those one-on-one moments you see in all the Vanguard videos. Toss in that the shotguns don't really tear people up even at close range and the normal effect right now goes like this:

Charge, Blast...target still not dead. Blast again, and myabe again. Now you are point blank to a ton of foes and likely out of ammo and very much screwed.

Alright, I've changed my tune a bit. For some reason using charge just clicked in my head tonight. I just charged a scion, dumped a clip of Shotty ammo into it, and then punched it five times to death and retreated. Not gonna lie, it was pretty badass.

The shotgun is the most devastating weapon at close range, and it DOES tear people up, especially provided you shoot them in the face.

If you're having that much problems killing enemies, then it's probably because you're not shooting accurately enough, or you're not debuffing them.

The Vanguard was my favorite class in the original, I made three. I actually preferred the pistol Vanguard. Max pistol, throw, lift and singularity. Sit back and kill stuff. I can't see anyway to do that in the sequel. The Vanguard does seem pretty useless to that playstyle.

That sounds alot like how they have portrayed the Adept class as working now, especially since Adepts are the ones to have all those skills now.

I think some folks thought they could go all Christina Norman on the first run through with no previous experience and play exactly the same.

I used a vanguard but 1 of my advanced trainning choices was barrier. When upgraded to the Area effect Charge turns Shepard into a Masher and charge into a group of soldiers make them scatter and use his allys to finish them up.

is it possible to use charge to get away from enemies? if so, how?

is pull the new lift? if so, can pull be used on multiple enemies?

I find the vanguard pretty easy to play, you've just got to charge towards enemies in cover or enemies that are out of LOS of their buddies. I think it would be nice to be able to charge to locations as well instead of always targeting enemies though.

I'll admit to that, however, even following some of the discussion about the changes on the forum, it is expected in a sequel, the same classes will play the same.  When I read they were reworking the talents, I didn't realize that meant they were completely changing the feel of all the classes.  I thought they'd try to maintain that at least.
