Why did we have to win the loyalty or Garrus and Tali? especially with my paragon shep they should have been instantly loyal

Because you came waving a banner of Cerberus, an organization known throughout the galaxy as anti-alien. They are both aliens....the mistrust is understandable.

Two years have passed since they were in your squad. They've both evolved as characters. Plus, you can reason (especially with Tali, as she says it outright) that they're uneasy about you working with Cerberus. So doing a loyalty mission for them puts their fears to rest about whether or not you've changed.

I’m pretty sure your answer is the answer, especially with Tali (the events of Ascension being so recent). At least they bothered to join up with Shepard… unlike SOME people. >:C

i dunno... i went the "i'm not really working for them" route... I let Tali take her crazy friend and I saved Garrus's ass on Omega... I just think it would have been a more continuous experience if they really had your back from the moment they realized you were alive

You were still rebuilt by Cerberus, you make that clear to at least Tali. She probably believes they have meddled with you in some way.

I'm still not sure they HAVEN'T meddled with our Shep in some way - I know they say they didn't, but those glowy pox marks say otherwise....

Tali, still trusted me right off the bat. I got her loyalyt mission seconds after getting her. Garrus, however, alot has changed in the last 2 years. I actually felt kind of sad talking to him sometimes.

The thing is, loyalty missions aren't really about the character's loyalty. It's about clearing up issues that are bothering them. Garrus is distracted by Sidonis, and Tali is distracted by the treason trial.

And with Zaeed it was either killing the back stabbin' sonofa or getting him to see past his burning desire for revenge.

Admittedly, the plot is also thin. Most of the old squad acts like you're an acquaintance, rather than their friend and leader.

Which is why Wrex, Garrus and Tali are awesome. Wrex greets you like an old drinking buddy and seems genuienly excited to see you, Garrus jokes around with you like an old friend, and Tali seemed to really care that you were back.
