Hey, I downloaded ME2 via steam and I tried to install the game yesterday. The installation process took a lot of time, stuck at the step "installing msiexec (step 1 of 3)". After 10 minutes or so, I receive the following message:

"The Windows Installer Service could not be accessed. This can occur if
the Windows Installer is not correctly installed. Contact your support
personnel for assistance."

This must be like the 10th game I downloaded and installed through steam, so I really don't know why this is suddenly happening.

Then the computer goes nuts and freezes, requiring a reset. Alt+Crtl+Del won't work.

I have Vista 32 bits family edition sp 2
3 gigs ram
nvidia 8800 GT
lots of free memory

I tried to redownload and reinstall but it didn't work. I also bought windows 7 upgrade yesterday so I might just try the upgrade and see if things work.

Finally, a little luck for both of us =)

I have the exact same problem, exactly the same one. Some differences, I have 1 GB more of RAM and GeForce 9400 GT, but the symptoms are the same ones.

I am sorry I can't do anything but kill your loneliness...

Can either of you upload an event log for that? It'll be easier to work out the problem

Actually nevermind i think i see the problem. you need to use regedit.exe to create a new expandable string value for the windows installer. something like \\Windows\\System32\\msiexec.exe /V should do the trick so it can locate windows installer. Sometimes values go AWOL and mess things up

Thanks for the quick answer. However, I know these things have to be carefully managed. Could you please explain it step by step?

I went into regedit and searched for "windows installer". It carried me to ".DEFAULT/Software/Microsoft/Windows/Shell/MuiCache".

I right click on MuiCache and it gives me the option of adding a new "expandable string value". Is this what you meant?

Thanks again.

1. At Start type "regedit"

HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE

SYSTEM

CurrentControlSet

Services

MSIServer

right click on WOW64, select "Modify"

Change Value data from "1" to "0"

2. At "Start" type "run"

type "services.msc"

go to "Windows Installer" and stop and start the program.

3. Reboot computer.

There is nothing called "WOW64" in "msiserver".

Thanks for the instructions, I hope I can apply them soon. Do you know what I should do about WOW64 in order to continue?

Okay let's go back to my original plan look for The imagepath in HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\\SYSTEM\\CurrentControlSet\\Services\\msiserver i can see it on your screenshot it only says image path in one place create a new expandable string value and enter the location for it "\\Windows\\System32\\msiexec.exe /V"

When I right-click on "ImagePath" and click "Modify" (or double-click on "ImagePath"), this is what appears:

http://img713.images...omasseffec.jpg/

I thought it could be important.

The new expandable string value is called "Arreglo", as you can see in the image. I put in the "Modify" option what you told me to put:

\\\\Windows\\\\System32\\\\msiexec.exe /V

Everything correct? What's next?

I don't know how, but has been written wrong --> In the Modify option in the new expandable string value, I put:

\\\\Windows\\\\System32\\\\msiexec.exe /V

I don't understand, it keeps doubling the number of "\\" ...

Oh, maybe you got it doubled too. How many "diagonal bars" have to go before every file? (Windows, System32 and msiexec)

It did nothing evidently. I was going on the idea that it was a missing a link and couldn't find windows installer i have one more thing for you to try if you will indulge me.

* Log on to your computer as an administrator.

* Click Start, and then click Run.

* In the Open box, type cmd, and then click OK.

* At the command prompt, type msiexec.exe /unregister, and then press ENTER.

* Type msiexec /regserver, and then press ENTER.

then try the game again see if the error is still there

Steam couldn't run after doing this. I rebooted the pc and now Steam is ok, but I guess the game still has the problem.

I'm going to quit playing with your registry before i mess steam up for you. Related to that i found a steam related fix for problems that may help if you got the game from steam.

To try verifying your files on Steam:

In Steam, right-click on the game and select "Properties." Select the "Local Files" tab and click the button that says "Verify integrity of game cache..."

Sorry i've not been too helpful so far. With computer problems i tend to just keep trying things until i find the solution. Your problem is annoying me and i want to solve it or i'll end up just feeling bad for failing XD

I already knew about the "veryfying files" option, and I used it many times. Thanks anyways, you've lost your time helping me...I hope someone will come and help us with this problem soon =P

I tried googling for your error at support.microsoft.com. Got a lot of the de-and-re-register stuff Moondoggie suggested. :) Buried deeper though, I finally found an installer:

You could try downloading & installing this new-ish version of the MSI and see if that does anything.

First of all:

is the msiexec.exe the executable of Windows Installer? I looked for and found it a few minutes ago. It says (in Details) that the version of this executable is 4.5.6002.18005.

If the answer to my question is YES, then the Windows Installer is up to date for sure, according to the link you've posted. Now that I know what Wndows Installer is (thanks for the link), I hardly believe there is a problem with it. I mean, I think the problem is probably in the regedit.

It would be great to have a Mass Effect 2 player in order to know how the "msiserver" should appear in the regedit. It must be a very simple thing, the key is knowing where I have to apply the change...

I'd offer to check for you, but I'm still on XP, and have no idea if it would be the same or not. :/ XP -> Vista was a pretty major change, so if you want to compare notes on the registry, I'd recommend finding a fellow Vista user, or at least someone with 7.

I've downloaded and installed Assassin's Creed II from Steam and apparently there is no problem, so I guess the only possible location of the problem is the Mass Effect II game itself.

This is horribly sad. I've spend my money, time and hopes in order to finally play the game. How do I contact any company which accepts its responsabilities? I am gonna talk a little bit more with Steam, which managed the installation of the game.

Done. I could finally run it by doing a clean start:
