Actually I've gone through the game with him as friends only, with all the dialouge options availeble just to see different reactions to dialouge given certain events, that's why I said it seems like he is crushing on the female warden, given that they are in good standing anyway. he actually does say a few cute/sweet lines to her even if they are 'just friends', but it could be me misinterpretting those lines since i dont know if he says them to male wardens.
Without knowing which lines you're referring to, I couldn't say for sure. My only complete playthrough has been with a male warden, but I have 11 characters at various points along the way. And I have to say, based on what I've seen so far, that outside of a romance there is very little if any change.
My male pcs are still really close to Alistair, but things that sound 'flirty' when said to a female just sound 'friendly' to a male. I think we can read into things too much. It's possible I'm missing something of course, but really, so far, the evidence points to it being subjective. We interpret into his behaviour what we want, or like, or whatever. It may be that 'family' thing. Alistair talks of the Wardens as being like a family. If you're female, even when not in a romance, it may seem that Alistair's actions which are meant to be brotherly give the appearance of a crush.

Well I do think gender has something to do with the interpretation. I mean take take Daveth - as a guy if you say "Watch my back", he's cool, a brother in arms. As a woman, he's a pervert.

So yeah, things do come out more flirty to females than males, but that's also why I said some normal lines would magically switch on the romance.
Hmmm, it is easy to turn the romance on with any of them, but it's also easy not to. I just get the feeling that Alistair and the Warden are best friends if you don't turn on the romance. Alistair may want to fall in love and he may be travelling with this fabulous woman, but if you don't turn the romance on, it doesn't feel like a guy in puppy love. And really, all the romances are very easy to accidentally turn on, and depending on how late you turn them on, you may end up with someone at 100 love at the very start.
Well it's also just that he's attract to women that it comes out like that. I mean look at Leli. She's attracted to both sexes, and I've been blinded a few times myself. I think it's a natural thing when you don't pay attention because you aren't interested. After doing a few runs through the dialouge and different answer trees I can see more of her hints/crushing. It could also be more obvious with Leli than Ali because of the "hair" dialouge being one of the triggers for the romance.
I do know if you marry Alistair and have never romanced him, you do NOT get the impression that he is pining away for his queen. If he's romanced and dumped, however, you do get that feeling.
well i'm not sure how you have done it, but i've done it a few ways. Pining is not what I would call it, for sure, but more like awkward? I mean i've done just the plain friendship marriage, i'm been in love status and broke up with before the archdemon, i've started it out as friendship then started a romance after the landsmeet, etc. what i do think though is that he wants his marriage to work, regardless of however the proposal is made.
btw crush =/= pining. i think that is like two entirely different levels here. pining would be like what most swoopers do over alistair and i do not mean to imply that his 'crush' is at that level.
