i don't get it at all. sounds like some people are picking the same or similar options as I did but getting better results. picked Legion to take the vents, Garrus to lead teams both times, samara for barrier, chose Thane for escort everyone survived right up until the end, where I found out Mordin died while I was off fighting the fetal Reaper. everyone was loyal, everyone had their upgrades and I made sure to get all team upgrades. i would really like to know straightforward, even mathematically, what factors decide what so my second playthrough will get me the last achievement I need...

There might be a hidden "morale" meter thats based on what you say to your squad that determines the chance of someone dying during the "hold the line" and "escape" phases.

From what I have figure out it depends on if you have completed their loyalty and the suggested upgrade for the Normandy. I have sent Modin through the vents and he survived. There might be something else involved but this is what I have done to get everyone to survive.

I had Zaeed and Miranda and they both died AFTER the boss died.

My thane got nailed. I sent him in the vents because, well, he just jumped out of the vents when I first met him anyways. Seemed like a good choice. I was wrong...

I picked Tali for the vents, Samara to lead the fire team. Tali died, despite me appearing to get through the section fine, opening all the vents, etc.. Then I picked Thane to lead the second group, and Samara to sustain the shield - again, got through the section just fine, but Thane still died. Sent Zaeed back with Chakwas to the ship, and took Grunt and Samara to the final fight.



So in all, I lost Thane and Tali. I had loyalty with all of my crew members, bought all of the ship upgrades, maxed out my paragon bar, and bought many of the crew member-specific upgrades. I have no idea what I could have done differently, except for maybe upgrading 100% of everything before starting the suicide mission.



I was pretty disappointed.

Everyone was loyal except the Cerburus Network special character who I did the Loyalty mission with but didn't take crap from him because he was a sore loser and would rather sate his revenge than save innocent people. Srsly you can't talk to him all he wants to do is tell war stories to Shepard. Which would be fine but he tries to treat Shepard like he is some rookie. Shepard was the Butcher of Torfin mutha ****



Srsly I hate mercs in the Mass Effect Universe.

For all the people that had Mordin die... Did you let him kill his assistant in his loyalty mission?

Tali did vents.

Garrus lead the second team both times.

Samara did the biotic field.

Let the non-essential crew fend for themselves so they ended up dying before they could make it to the Normandy.

No one on my team died.

Had everyone survive. The team leaders may be the most important for survival, tried once with Zaeed leading and he died, but no one else did. Seems like people who had someone die in the Vents had a non-leader type leading their other team.

I don't get this one..

I picked my squad for the second time during the part where you needed a biotic to block you from the swarms.  We make it all the way through and then out of no where Jack gets grabbed and pulled away by the swarm, WTF??  It didn't make sense considering I had her loyal and pursued non-renegade love interest.  Just for no reason (at least I believe to be) she got killed.  It pisses me off so much and I dont know why.

Okay, instead of listing who you sent, as that doesn't seem to matter. How long did it take you to open the vents and kill the Reaper? Approximately.

Legion for vents, Miranda led first time. Garrus led second w/ Samara as sheilder(Jack's a little too dis-tractable for me to trust that job to her). Jacob led them back and I had everyone holding the door. Didn't have Zaeed and made it out with everyone alive and kicking.

No I let him live. Does that matter?

I did all paragon interrupts and none of them died so no. I kept the assistant alive and had Mordin work on the cure and they lived.

Legion for vent - Tali for first firesquad (and I had Samara and Miranda in my party). Legion Died.



Jack for Bionic Shield - Miranda for second firesquad - Had Thane and Garrus with me. Thane Died.



Sent Jacob back with the civilians, he made it, no casualties.



Miranda as Doorholding commander - Had Tali and Garrus with me for the final bossthingy. Jack Died (at the door).

I have a quick question for everyone here who beat the game. I just now noticed that armor upgrades are found after you hack something sometimes for certain races. The truth is I messed up on a few hacking terminals at various parts of the game. Of course you know that if you mess up on the hacking you can't go back and try again without loading the misson again.

Does anyone know if you affect this surivival of certain squad mates by failing at this? Thanks

Thats what I'm thinking. The first time I beat the game I had everyone loyal, but I didn't have alot of upgrades for mordin because eezo is really hard to find. He died, and I think thats why. I'm getting ready to play again with new game+. This time I will have all the squad upgrades before I start the mission.

Just finished my first playthrough. Everyone survived except that I didn't save the crew (even though I was playing as a paragon, I was paranoid that if I sent someone to go with the crew, that person would die)...



Legion was my tech specialist.



Garrus led my 2nd team, both times.



Morinth was my biotic specialist.



Miranda and Jack were my two squadmates (as they were throughout the rest of the game).

I got everyone out alive on my first playthrough. Had all the ship upgrades except probes and med bay, had all the recommended character upgrades (i.e. Legion's rifle and Grunt's shotgun). I had quite a few other squad upgrades, mostly shield strength and health, and a little tech/biotic strength. I don't know if those had any bearing on the situation, but I figured I'd mention them anyway. (Also, get the Cain "nuke" launcher. Sooooo worth it, especially for an epic finish with the final boss.)



For the final suicide run, I had Legion go in the vents and Miranda lead the second team. I had Grunt and Tali on my team. Then I had Zaeed lead the surviving crew members (Chakwas, etc.) back to the Normandy. Garrus lead the next second squad, and Samara controlled my biotic barrier. I had Thane and Legion with me on that run. For the final fight I had Samara and Jack (not the best choices in hindsight, but whatever). And yeah, got it on my first try.

Sent garrus through vents and had Jacob lead. Garrus died.



Reloaded. Sent Legion through vents and had Miranda lead. No casualties.



Had Samara use her barriers, had Garrus lead the distraction team, had Jacon escort survivors. No casualties. (Samara doing that biotic burst at the end was badass).



Had Tali and Jack with me for final boss. No casualties.
