Even though I have beaten ME1, I can't import that character into ME2. How do I fix this?

Also having this problem, literally just finished my second play through, and just finished installing ME2. Go to import character, and no careers are showing up. Anyone know how to fix this?

You need to use the Mass Effect 2 Configuration tool to find your ME1 save game directory.

Assuming you are both running the PC version:

Go to My Documents/Bioware/Mass Effect/Save and check to see if there are any saves inside starting with "char_xx-xx-xx" (where x is a random number).

If you don't then your ME1 game didn't create an end-of-game save properly when you beat Saren, your only option is to reload your last save and kill him again.

If you do have the endgame saves, then fire up the Mass Effect 2 launcher, click Configuration, and go to the Save tab. Click on the button to import savegames and browse to your Mass Effect/Save folder, select it and press OK. Now exit the Configuration tool and start up Mass Effect 2 and you should be able to import your character(s).

Enjoy. :)

Does this mean you can only import characters from a completed game save?

I have done everything up to the import process and I know for sure that I have completed saves in the save folder of ME1. On the configuration tool, the save folder is under the list, but no tab to access the contents. Please help me, I have no clue what to do here...Image IPB

I have the exact same problem. The char_xx-xx-xx file is in my save folder, but when I use the configuration tool, the save folder is empty.

Just tried to force it by putting my save file into the ME2 folder, and, much to my surprise, my mass effect 1 complete save was already in the ME2 file. Haven't played the game yet, but just selecting the save file wholesale in the configuration tool might work.

The config tool sucks since after you choose the ME1 save directory you get no (none, zero, nada) confirmation that you did anything. But then load up ME2 and you can then import any completed save game that was in the folder you choose in the user-feedbackless config tool.

What if your Mass Effect 2 didnt have a save folder in it. It only had Binaries and BIOgame?
