I don't know if this was a one off, but i was getting these issues in both ME and ME2.

I couldn't play for more than 10 minutes without my graphics gard (GTX 285) glitching out and locking my machine.

I checked my running processes and noticed teatimer (part of spybot S&D) was taking up about 500mb of RAM o.O

One i disabled teatimer and rebooted so it was no longer resident all my graphics problems went away.

like i said i don't know if it is a one off for me but it's worth a try.

Oddly enough I've gotten the black screen on 75% of the EA published games I've played on my laptop hopefully I'll get it to work when I get an external graphics card.

The problem is obviously in .bik movies. When you do the -nomoviestartup thing, you dont see any .bik movies but the game runs flawlessly. I think only a patch will resolve this issue and if it was not for this fix I would have returned the game and never bought anything from bioware again as it's not the first time they do nothing to fix problems.

This fix doesn't work when you get the IFF and have to take the shuttle to your next mission :( no fix works, the game just hangs

Thank you Avarix! I almost uninstall this game until I found this post. This game is running beautifully smooth without stutter and lets hope the developer release the new patch soon.

Hey guys. My dad is a big Mass Effect fan but was getting the lockup on the first loading screen. There's a fix available which turns the loading movies into empty files, but that was kind of boring, so I grabbed single images (frame 50) from each bik, recompressed them, and it still seems to work. There's are many compression artifacts, but still, it's better than an empty green box. (:

The problem apparently was that ME2 was trying to play a looping 720p movie while also trying to load the game resources. This fix worked for us, so feel free to try it and pass it around... assuming my dropbox doesn't run out of bandwidth.

I advise people to do everything they can before they do the "recover the IFF" mission, it's not near the end of the game but you will be unable to proceed even with this or the empty .blk fix

Is there a cinematic during that mission which causes the freeze you're talking about, Doug?

edit: This is a random guess, but if it isn't a fullscreen cutscene that plays during that mission, perhaps there is a viewport or computer display ingame that is playing a movie (projected onto the ingame object) and that is where the game is locking up. If it's something like that, it would be really convenient to give that movie the same treatment as the loading screens.

I dont know how you did this but do you think it would be possible to do it with most bik videos that are in the game or all of them? Or simply doing those that are problematic like the citadel one and near the endgame. I am not asking you to do it but how did you do this ? Grabbing each frame seems like an awfully long job though but I may have the time to do this if it fixes the stuttering. Thank you for the fix will try it tomorrow.

I don't know for sure if there's a cinematic, however it seems like a good place for one.  I have the same problem when I go to the Citadel, but removing the -nointromovie command and just using the blank blk's fix it, with this one though neither of the fixes work.. and there's no point where I can just say yo, I wanna do something else instead of fly to this place, so I'm stuck :(

Do you know the mission I'm talking about?  Miranda says "We'll be waiting in the shuttle bay for you", fade to black annnnnnd nothing

6969:

I am not sure what you are saying you would like to do with the other cinematic videos, but it's a fairly simple process.

http://www.radgameto...com/bnkdown.htm - Install RAD Video Tools (it's free) and you will be able to watch the .bik movies within the game folder. In order to extract individual frames, you just have to select the file with RAD Video Tools and hit convert. You can select multiple piles and it will compile a batch list automatically after you set up the output. On the main conversion output screen, I just set the output type to jpg and limited the frames to start at 50 and end at 50. It would probably have been prettier to export to a lossless filetype, but at least this keeps the filesize down. Once you have the images, select them (can also be batched) in the tool's main filebrowsing window and hit the "Bink it!" button.

If you did this to the pre-rendered ingame cinematics, though, it would be weird when you're playing it... the cutscene would essentially be skipped. If you are comfortable with viewing the pre-rendered cinematics outside the game, then it could work and let you continue. The problem I see with this is figuring out which .bik file pertains to which cutscene in the game, but I think if these cutscenes were replaced with short images that say "watch [filename].bik" or something, it would work out.

Doug:

Not sure; I don't actually have the game installed. It's my dad's. Maybe I'll borrow it from him and try to figure out where you mean, because then I can just fix it like the other loading movies.

My assumption at the moment is that there are points in which the game loads, and runs a cinematic that isn't one of the ones with "load" in the filename. So it's essentially running into the same problem as usual. If you want, you can look around in the movies directory and see if there's anything like "IFF_load" or something, I don't know, just be careful not to spoil the game for yourself. :)

I checked out the movie folder and none of the names seem to be correlating with the point that it hangs :( I think your assumption is correct, I just don't know the name of the planet or anything that I'm apparently flying to, it never even said it in game.

I viewed pretty much all the movies except the end game ones and it seems like ShpCr2_100_Arrival_Part1 3 and 5 are the ones that fit the context of what's going on in game the most

Hey for any of you who are using multicore processors on XP and still getting the loading screen issue, go into device manager and check under "computer" to make sure it is registering as a multiprocessor PC and not a standard PC. I did that, rebooted, had to install some software, reinstalled ME2 and the loading screen problem went away on my dual core PC. Just another thing to try out. Make sure you tell the installer to keep your saved games when you are uninstalling!!!

This also fixes the issue of getting a black screen when using the shuttle after installing the IFF.

Ok heres how to get the last mission started using the workaround. This is going to sound ridiculous but I got it working, theres going to be massive stuttering but you can get past the "attack(spoiler)"

I'd recommend having a save game ready to go at the galaxy map

Step 1: Backup all your green loading movies
Step 2: Replace all your loading movies with the originals
Step 3: Start the game with movies enabled DON"T PRESS ANY KEY
Step 4: Watch the optional intro movie by waiting a minute at "press any key screen"
Step 5: Press any key when it returns to the intro screen, there should be stutter, don't worry this will get you past the loading screen when you load your save game
Step 6: Resume your save and stutter through the mission, it should end without stutter (IE: in breifing room)
Step 7: Save after mission
Step 8: Go set back up your workaround.
Step 9: Resume your save after the misson! Enjoy

Ridiculous, I know, if you knew which loading screens you needed you could fix it but that is for someone else to figure out. Don't skip steps or you will freeze. Good luck!

(maybe update the topic too)

The fix above works. Its torture getting through the stutter, but at least you can finish the game.

I noticed that it changes nothing when i compress a Video to 1% Data rate and 720x405 Pixel...

it also doesnt look very good ...

So i think we need another Compress Algorythm. Maybe MPEG2 or DivX ... but what can be played? Anyone tryed another?

This fix works great, but requires massive patience to get through that section. I can now make progress again!

I am going to try this this weekend when I can get back to my computer and my game. I'm going to cross my fingers and hope it works. I was hoping to finish the game last night, but then this problem came along and ruined everything. Sigh. But yeah, thank you for trying this out and posting this solution. Much appreciated.

i found a workaround on another thread blaming the error on a glitch when changing disks during install, and that the workaround was to make an iso of both disks and install it that way...

I tried all the ones I had but couldn't get them to work either. Most didn't even convert properly, hahah. It would be cool if someone could find another video codec to embed in the bink file that worked somehow.
