Does anyone have any tips or tricks for playing as a Vangaurd?

Because right now, the class feels kinda sucky. I cannot use my charge ability because I just get shredded as soon as I go in. It only becomes safe when there's like 1 enemy left and at that point it's just some cool looking thing that didn't impact the battle at all.

Furthermore, I don't get to use the shotgun much! Since getting close to people = death, and I have to ping down their shield before I can crowd control them with my powers anyways, 95% of my fight time is spent ghetto sniping with my 2 pistols and wishing I'd just switched classes to Infiltrator.

PS: On Insane difficulty.

I played on hardcore . . .

I only used charge against packs of unarmored/shielded people or a single super bad guy.

The second shotgun sucks in my opinion; it shoots faster but does far less damage.

I didn't bother with cryo ammo, only used inferno since its good against armor. Used SMG a lot to take down shields.

Pull is super useful; I evolved it to pull field. Very good against husks, and very good crowd control in my opinion. Only downside is that you have to take down any shields or armor first, which is easy with the smg and inferno.

My #1 tip for Vanguard is pretty simple: Don't use Charge. Just avoid the urge, it'll save you a lot of deaths and frustration. Pull and Shockwave are really good, and I highly recommend taking AR training as soon as you can, since ARs are quite a bit better than the other weapon types in my opinion.

Yeah I guess I should have leveled pull instead of charge hehe. I just wanted that sweet bullet time action. Unfortunately it feels like the bullet time should last about 5 times longer than it does.

Nice, good to hear I can use an AR later. And as for dying with charge, I think my death count from "charging past the close guy to the dudes in the back of the room" was up to like 6 in the first couple hours of play :)

I only Charge if the enemy is at Health, I'm all good then. With armored enemies its inferno ammo. Yay :)

If u use charge dont charge into the middle of a group of baddies. Charge a guy on their flanks or charge a guy that is behind the main line of resistance. Charge is a quick way to flank groups of enemies.

Iam playing hardcore on my first playthrough. To help with charge, grab barrier as an extra ability so you take less damage and whomever you charge, make sure they are next to obstructions so you can take cover real quick.

Bingo, this is the use of charge, you don't charge blithely in to die.  You use it tactically.  See a guy by a ledge?  Finish him.  See a guy on the flanks, charge him, take cover and shockwave everyone.  They are now nicely lined up for you.  Your companions need to be doing cover fire at all times.  No shotguns, long range whatever they got.

If you're early on I would switch classes to something else.  You WILL get screwed later on in the game.

I enjoy charge, but you definitely have to pick your targets and check for other enemies. It's tactical, not a crutch. Don't spam it. I chose the area charge specialization for crowd control so that I'd have more flexibility if I charge into a pack of them. Have your weapon reloaded and prepped before you charge.

Also, before you even charge, know exactly what you're going to do when you hit the enemy. In short: be ready to blast the charged foe away and then know exactly who your follow up target(s) is/are and shoot them as well while your cooldown is going. If there are multiple enemies, always charge the one on the outside of a group. Follow up with Shockwave to clear any enemies that are further away. Don't wait to watch. If you haven't done so already, while the Shockwave's in effect, you should be diving for cover--any cover, unless you know you can rush in and pick them off with a weapon one after the other in quick succession.

Just keep playing and as you level you'll get stronger and stronger. I was about to quit my engineer because I felt so weak but decided to stick it out now I'm tearing through enemies left and right.

Charge is an ability that just takes some practice to perfect. Good luck

Edit:

As for playing on Insane I hear the Sentinel is awesome it's very versatile and Tech Armor is an awesome thing when you can die so easily. Might want to think about switching.

I'm probably not as far in the game as others with my vanguard, but I've been using the flamethrower heavy weapon with charge. It seems to do a pretty good job. And as others have said, step one is to get those shields down, step two is you dont charge in unless you can grab cover w/o being immediately flanked, or you are able to mop up all immediate enemies.

Its also pretty handy to get flanking on the enemy. I.e. Get you up on a ledge on the other side of some enemies, so that you get higher ground plus you effectively flank them with you on one side and your squad on the other.

Charge is good on Krogan who are down to just health since it saves you lots of ammo to simply charge in and punch the crap outta them. Make sure they are alone though or you'll get shredded.

Well based on my experience on Insanity so far:

Charge:
- Obviously don't charge into groups of enemies. Use it to pick off lone shielded or pairs of unprotected enemies.
- Abuse the hell out of the fact that you can now aim while paused to line up your shot after you charge.
- The charge stun only works on unprotected enemies, so don't count on being able to send everyone flying. Keep that in mind if you wish to use it as a disable.....charge an unprotected guy and unload on his friend.

Melee:
- good for stunning any unshielded enemy
- awesome for a quick disable stun post charge or filler inbetween shot gun blasts

Barrier:
- Helps with the squishiness allowing a tad more survival in both long and short range combat
- More shield = good :)

Anyways those are my observations so far....vanguard is prettty squishy and you do have to be careful when you use charge. Just play around with it and you'll get some idea about what you can and can't do with it. Be creative :)
