I usually have Leliana as the rogue in my party if my PC isn't a rogue, but this time I want Zev and want to get him early enough before he's too set in the skills he usually has when I "acquire" him. Is the only way to get the Denerim cutscene where he's hired is to complete one of the ally quests? Ie, I've only gotten him after I've done Lothering and then the mage's tower-is that how it works or can I get him before doing an ally quest?

Yep, that's the only way to get him. Either complete an ally quest, deal with Connor, or find the Urn of Sacred Ashes. Completing any one of these five will get you the cutscene.

The quickest way i have found is go to Denerim, deal with "Weylon" to open up Haven, head to Haven and do the sacred ashes questline and that should be enough. :)

Zevran, it seems to me is queued in a sequence of "intermission" traveling cutscenes. I imagine if you do a LOT of traveling between map locations, he'll appear sooner. I find that he usually pops up between the 1st and 2nd main plotline quests. But if I went from Lothering to Sulcher's Pass, to Soldier's Peak, and then back and forth between those locations, I _think_ he would appear even before I even started the first main quest.

Doesn't work that way.  I did a lot of travelling back and forth doing as many sidequest as I could before I did any of the main quest line and Zeveran still didnt show up until after I finished 1 main quest.  For me this is the broken circle but he's always far enough along I don't bother with him.

He doesn't screw up his skills that badly. Maybe a couple too many points in dex, and with Cripple instead of Momentum.

It really depends on what level you get him, I've even had him with talents selected where he didn't meet the requirements for tha talent.

But the worst thing is that he doesn't seem to put anything into the deft hands line, making him poor at opening locks and finding/removing traps.  Since this is one of the main utility functions of a rogue, and since the OP wants to use Zev instead of Leliana as the party rogue, it makes sense to get Zev ASAP.

I think Redcliff and the Circle (avoid doing the circle sidequests and opening chests) have the least XP (I've never gotten more than a level and a half out of either one) so I would do one of them right out of Lothering.

The odd thing about Zev is, given his attributes, he should probably have the lethality points in the lockpicking line (seems to be set up with attributes as a dex rogue, but he has the talents of cunning rogue).

The earliest I've picked him up was level 9 out of the Circle.

I got him @ lvl 9 before too. If you do the Circle first (and avoid sidequests) you can get him that early. But IMHO, he's still rather hosed at that point. The worst part being, of course, that he tells you he can open locks when he can't.

I don't like respec mods, but I really need to d/l the no auto-level sometime.

Right about not opening locks, I have him at level 12, he has deft hands and improved tools and, so far, in the whole game I have never opened a chest!

Any ideas?

Or you can use the Zevran ASAP mod. It's a mod that trigger his assassination attempt after Lothering. -> http://www.dragonage...file.php?id=840

Just grab a mod that makes all NPC's level 1, and un auto leveled when they join you...

Saved me tons of headaches, now I dont have to worry about dealing with a gimped charecter just because I want to experiance thier storylines.

I just pick who I want, design them how I want, and still get thier story.
