The textures in both Mass Effect and 2 are flickering.. I guess is what you'd call it. I play other games and this doesn't happen. I just want to know why this is happening :(.

I notice it mostly on character models when in conversations. But it happens in or out of conversations. It is the worst on Zaeed. It isn't an issue that just came up after anything it has just always happened and no settings I can change that I have changed has stopped it.

The only other places I've ever seen this flickering is on doors in the Normandy on both games. It doesn't happen to environments other than your ship.

If you put these in a series of browser tabs and switch to each one like a flipbook it's pretty much the exact effect[HEH B)] I'm getting.

Specs:

-Windows 7 Ultimate 64-bit
-Pentium E5200 Dual Core 2.5 ghz
- 4096 MB RAM
-Radeon HD 4770 1gb VRAM - Catalyst Version 9.12
- DirectX 11

Game details (ME2):
-1280x1024 Fullscreen
-All video settings on except Motion Blur.
-3 Cinematic Lights.
-16x Ansiotropic Filtering
- Steam non-DDE edition preorder.

I was using the Catalyst drivers from December until yesterday when they were updated. This made no difference. The game runs great. This also happens to me in Mass Effect 1. This does not happen in any other games I own besides the Mass Effect series.

I am having the same issue! Only happens with Mass Effect and Mass Effect 2. I updated my Catalyst drivers as well and it made no difference. I made a video of it -

Hopefully someone has some idea of what it could be =)

Wow it looks much worse for you. I am sorry :(. But yeah that's exactly the problem. What is your set-up? Maybe we can find our common flaw.

I hope this is what you meant by set-up lol =) :

- Windows 7 Home Premium 64-bit
- Intel® Core™ i7 CPU 920 @ 2.67GHz(8 CPUs),~2.7GHz
- 12288MB RAM
- 2376MB used, 22180MB available
- DirectX 11
- ATI Radeon HD 5800 Series

Game Settings:
- 1920 x 1080 Fullscreen
- Everything is maxed with Film Grain turned off.

I received my games from Direct2Drive.com
The game runs excellent aside from this flickering :(

Yeah that's what I meant. Maybe our crime is having ATI cards.

Not sure it's due to ATI.  ive had no issues as many have reported.

My games (ME1 & 2) run perfectly fine, with no flickering at all, All graphics set at MAX
and im running a ATI 4890 vapor-X Card with CCC 9.12 drivers atm

Just a thought, but Im wondering if those who have issues with the game may all be in where it was purchased from?

Got my copy from the EA Store ..

While I'd love to buy another copy to test that theory out.. I don't think I will.

I have this problem from time to time as well but I'm not a Radeon user so that is not the reason.

Not really, it's almost the same, only difference is that your problem seems "fixed", while mine happens all the time. The look of the flickering textures matches mine perfectly. Besides, that's the only screenshot I was able to get with the problem...

I only say it looks like a different problem because it looks you have a problem with all of the textures. Where the one we are having seems to only be on character models.

I don't really care if it's the same problem or not I'm just trying to keep the thread visible in case someone can help us.

If I'm not mistaken, it looks like a bad case of Z-buffer fighting. This Wikipedia article pretty much covers the full extent of what I know about it. Any experts out there? I've seen this consistently on character models in the human embassy area, but nowhere else at this point.

-Windows 7 64-bit
-Intel Core 2 Quad Q6600
-4gb RAM
-Nvidia 9600GT
-Steam DDE, pre-loaded.
(Before someone asks: I double checked the hardware temps. Everything looks good)

I started messing around with Catalyst Control Center's Overdrive tool. I had never used it before so I let it pick the best settings for me. Both the Memory and GPU clock on my card were set ~60 MHz higher than they were previously. I started up ME2 and the problem was much, much worse.

So I went back to the default settings and it was the same amount of flicker I had when I started. After that I brought both speeds down another ~50 MHz and there was less flickering. I continued to tweak the speeds down while going back in game to check on Zaeed's face where it was worst for me until there was no more.

I do not know anything about overclocking, or underclocking. This solution I have found has me thinking it is my graphics card that is at fault. Any thoughts or insights?

I contacted ATI support this morning and haven't heard back yet, hopefully they'll get back to me with some kinda options to try. I know pretty much nothing when it comes to the real technical issues with computers haha so I haven't been playing around with many options, I fear I'll just make it worse xD It's already flickering more then ever.

I'm disappointed though, the 5 year old computer is not having any issues running the game like this 3 month old one is. The old computer is running with an Nvidia card, 0 issues. The graphics actually look better for some reason lol :(

I did notice something though, the flickering does not start until I have a conversation with someone now and then its flicker-city the whole time.

THAT !! I have the exact same problem and I can confirm that it is a z-fighting problem. I have it in ME1, ME2 and Dragon age games. AFAIK this problem is a software problem. I have the flickering on guns, on caracters eyes and hairs and some walls textures. It's not always happening tho, but I am ready for a fix. I just wish a graphic devs could answer me for once and tell me there's no fix for this. It has something to do with z-buffer bias precisions and all that stuff.

It has nothing to do with overclocking and stuff. It's all about depth bias precisions and such.

We have to keep bumping this thread because I am sick of this z-buffer fighting in my games if you ask me.

Hey you guys ever thought about DirectX files problems or corruption? I'm going to attempt a total cleanup of DX files and reinstall them, or only ones that matters for ME2.

AFAIK Z-buffer precision controls is all Direct X

I didn't claim it had anything to do with overclocking. All I said was underclocking my GPU with ATI's Overdrive makes it stop happening. It's not an ideal solution for me either.

Overclocked:

Underclocked:
http://img683.images...nderclocked.jpg

I know this doesn't really show anything so I made videos too. I don't have the bandwidth to upload them right now.

I'm not saying that anyone should try this. It prevents the flickering I was having and I'd like to know why.

If I don't get a reply from ATI within the next day or so I'll be calling into Alienware support to see if they may have some solutions :) I'll update you guys when I hear back from either company.

Well this is ATI's response:

Ensure the latest motherboard BIOS and motherboard and CHIPSET drivers are installed. These are available from the system or motherboard manufacturer’s website.

Also, make sure that the computer meets all of the recommended system requirements for the application or the game. Disable all background programs and services that are not necessary to run Windows. Make sure there is an adequate power supply.

In some cases, a clean uninstallation, followed by an installation of the latest drivers can resolve issues. For a step by step guide to please refer to knowledgebase article: “ATI Catalyst Driver Suite Installation Instructions”.

Everything is up to date so I guess I'm going to contact Alienware to see what there take on it is.

I'm having the exact same problem, and Its extremely annoying. I highly doubt its the graphics cards, because I'm getting like the exact same problem on the xbox 360.

Hi all. After testing every possible solution the underclocking was the one that helped for me. It seems as if many people get this with newer graphics cards (also Nvidia I've seen) and not with older ones strange enough. I myself couldn't underclock with ATI's own ATI overdrive since it didn't allow me to go lower than 900 MHz. I used ATI Tray Tool for that and after lowering it a bit the flickering and artifacts disappeared. Until now at least, I hope that it doesn't come back.
