I have a problem where I only get sound from the Bioware and EA logos when the game starts but absolutely no sound within the game itself or the menu screens. I am using Vista 32 and a SoundBlaster X-Fi. Has anyone else had this problem and managed to fix it? I just ran Mass Effect 1 and that is working fine with full sound.
Mass Effect 2 - No sound in game

Same problem, does anyone have a fix for this?
Edit: It seems to be on and off, randomly. Restarting a couple times fixed the problem. But I'm wondering whether or not it will happen again. A permanent fix would be nice.

I had this problem starting yesterday morning (after playing fine from the 26th with DLC). I deleted the local Steam files and then redownloaded the game. I ran the game and had sound. I then installed the DLCs - Blood Dragon Armor, Inferno Armor, Zaeed and Normandy Crash. The sound disappeared again.
On the ME2 desktop shortcut, I right-mouse clicked and selected "Run as Administrator" and the sound was back in the game! I have modified the shortcut to always run as administrator going forward. Crossing my fingers that the problem does not come back.
(I have Win7 x64.)

This problem appeared after I installed the Inferno armour (my game arrived before the promo code did, and was working before). May also be because I ran it with the USB sound card I use for VOIP plugged in, but given Lily_ME's comment above, it looks like the DLC may be to blame.

Right click shortcut and left click run as administrator worked for me. I tried reboot and multiple relaunches prior to this to no avail. First time this happened, I thought something was up with the sound on my pc but movies and music worked flawlessly so its something wrong with the game itself. I'm running win 7 64 bit and an Asus Xonar sound card that has had zero problems to this point.

Seems to be sitll an issue. I've changed the sound settings via the config app. From "default" to "on" and back whenever the game went silent. Works for me.

Try going to the binary file, the ME2.exe, and checking off the "run as admin"
it worked for me.
