It's obviosly MORRIGAN!!!!!!
Here's why:
Ohgren= If you get his approval low enough you have to option to kill him :] (hated him, annoying basterd.)
Leliana= You can kill her if you choose to hide the Urn of Sacred Ashes from everyone :[
Wynne= You could kill her if you didn't try to save the mages being held by the one guy in the circle of magi.
Shale= DLC so not everyone got her so shes not an option.
Allister= king/ option to die so its just simply not going to be him.
Sten= Went back to his people so its not him.
Zevron= Option to kill so its not him.
Which leaves... MORRIGAN!!!!! :D She is the only character you cant kill, or kick from your party (Well you can kick her but she comes back within your next few quests)! she also has a HUGE impact at the end. Im almost posative its Morrigan. + the thingy sys afew monthes after the main story and it only takes 9 months to pop out a baby :] (My baby) ... hope its a boy >:/

So I bet its dog.
You also forgot to mention the secret companion in DAO, but he can be killed, kicked, and is heavily involved in other things than following you around.
Morrigan fled from the warden as far as she could; and she can be kicked; on the other hand you have no chance to avoid her recruitment.
I didnt try, but you cannot kill her either, right?
Lets agree that the secret companion in Awakening is a BIG big mystery for now and we just cannot know who it will be with such little information we have.
Futher discussion is entertaining but rather pointless.
I hope some useful information will pop up in a future trailer.

You forgot to mention Dog, although his recruitment can be missed easily. On the other hand it would be also easy to include Dog in Awakening if you didnt pick him up in DAO - remember, he is your personal pet. But he wouldnt be a ''old favorite'' then. He cannot be kicked or killed.

Well, for ME Duncan was never ever a ''old favorite'' nor was he some sort of companion, to say it bluntly, he was that guy who forced me to join the grey wardens, the fool who went willingly on a suicide mission and he only served a very minor role at the beginning of the game.
I would be hugely disappointed if hes the one.

I believe I remember reading somewhere that Bioware stated it IS an old companion...not just an old favorite. I am too lazy to cite this source, but it is not that hard to find...maybe it was IGN interview.
Also, I shall disprove some statements above concerning which companions can't come back.
Leliana=left for dead at urn, the magical urn that cures Eamon, the magical urn right next to her, the magical urn that a certain warden might have spilled its contents on the floor and she could have licked it up and BAM cured of fatal wounds
Wynne=she died once already, whats to say more spirits did not come to her aid to sustain her life
Sten=he has legs...he can walk back. if left at lothering, he could have been released by someone else, found his sword and been bad*** like that. Unlikely though I'll admitt.
Morrigan=duh! of course she can come back, but her story would probably be more interesting if she did not join the group.
Shale=she was once a dwarf warrior, that would be awesome if she got her mortality back and rejoined the party. just thought of that. after all we need a female elf and dwarf character still to balance the cosmos.
Oghren=his character wasn't developed enough i feel and almost no matter what you do he is alive
Alistair=yea he kinda does have to play a minor role or else people would feel left out if their toon killed him off.
Dog=yea he is not coming back either, unless you can somehow form a real relationship with him and have interesting dialogue
Zev=i don't know Bioware can do whatever they want, if they want zev back then they can get him back.

No, disagree... I don't think the campaign has to strictly account for all possible endings/continuities simultaneously etc. -it's not that strict. The game will most likely have various optional starting points/strands (akin to the six original character backgrounds offered in the original campaign). So, for example, Allister dies OR becomes king, you are correct, but the first Awakening trailer shows him as king (i.e. not as dead!) and as such, the trailer, at least does not take into account the possibility that he had died in the original (and he may take up an active role as Grey Warden in the new campaign, per my previous post, above)... so the same take could be applied to ANY of the characters!
Let's face it folks, it could be anyone of them... but availability/salary negotiations with respect to the actors WILL be a deciding factor! Even Flemeth might have a cameo slot, depending on how much that actress would be paid (at LEAST $50,000 for a few days in the studio).
So.............................. March, 2010... all will be revealed.

I really hope we get Alistar back and the dog, they made a powerful tanking team and it was always fun to see what they did with the dog.

After 10 playthroughs i was mad bout him, the whole time trying to romance with me.
In my next games i just ended killing him each time i founded him, not even allowing him to talk.
So please, just not him >.<'

the expansion takes place only months after DAO so Morrigan's child is not even born yet and they dispell all rumors of her coming back. Personally, I can't wait to be suprised, but more looking foward to the new members, provided they are a mix of males and females. I also like how he mentioned that Duncan "supposably" was killed by the ogre. I think the person who mentioned Duncan may be right, although since Duncan really never "joined" your party, I guess he can't really be a "returning party member.
