I can see there is a folder for screenshots under Documents, but there seems to be no option ingame for binding a key to take screenshots (short of printscreen or using some other utility).

Edit: Oh, and is there a search function on this site? I can't seem to find it if there is.

in ME1 it was f11 - but neither f11 nor print does the trick in ME2 :\\

So a bumb for this, I'd love to take a few screenshots _without_ using external tools like fraps.

Apparently it is F13, oddly enough no one seems to have that key. What will really make you pissy is that while there is a not a functioning screen shot key, there two screenshot folders.

^Yeah, it's a little weird.

Guess I'll just have to use fraps. =/

Binding for screenshot:

[SFXGame.SFXGameModeDefault]
Bindings=( Name="F12", Command="Shot" )

Of course you can use any key, you don't have to use F12.

You do have to fix-up the caolesced.ini file after editing it. See Coalesced Editor in this forum for an easy way to fix-up the ini file after editing, there are other utilities that can do this as well.

  • See the above post for the link to the Coalesced Editor.
  • Download the Editor and unzip its contents into the ME2 main directory.
  • Run "ME2CoalescedEditor".
  • Select the "Bindings Manager" menu.
  • In the bottom-left of the Controller Bindings screen, there's a "Game Keys" field.
  • Choose which key you want for taking screenshots.
  • To the right of the "Game Keys" is "Binding Options".
  • Select "Add New".
  • A field populates which allows you to enter the command for this key.
  • Between the quotes, type "shot".
  • Hit ENTER on your keyboard.
  • Close the Coalesced Editor.
  • Load ME2. Screenshots ahoy!
  • Default directory for ME2 screenshots is "\\Documents\\BioWare\\Mass Effect 2\\BIOGame\\Screenshots".
  • 1920x1080 res screenshots are 6.076 MB BMPs.

Only problem with this method is that you cannot take any shots during dialogues and some of the best shots often come exactly at that time. So this works but it's only a "50% solution" to the issue. But yes, how dumb of Bioware to not add such a functionality when it already was in previous version, and adding salt to the wound, the game makes TWO screenshots folders when it installs. Oh the irony...

Well, some people just cannot be satisfied.

The cut-scenes are not techically in-game so I wouldn't expect the in-game screenshot feature to work there.

I don't use Fraps myself because it can and does interfere with the performance of the game and can cause crashes.

Oh yes you can, look here:

[SFXGame.SFXGameModeConversation]
Bindings=( Name="LeftMouseButton",Command="PC_ConvSelect | Shared_ConvIntRenegade")
Bindings=( Name="RightMouseButton",Command="PC_ConvHilight | Shared_ConvIntParagon")
Bindings=( Name="SpaceBar",Command="PC_ConvSkip")
Bindings=( Name="F8", Command="shot" )  <----see this!

[SFXGame.SFXGameModeCinematic]
Bindings=( Name="SpaceBar", Command="Shared_CineSkip" )
Bindings=( Name="Escape", Command="Shared_CineSkip" )
Bindings=( Name="F8", Command="shot" ) <-------and this!

Works perfectly.

Now that's an excellent find! I'm going to try that out next time I run the game.

Thank you!
