Wha'? Do you mean spellPOWER? Spellpower is basically your magic attribute minus 10, and every point of spellpower essentially increases the strength of your spells by 1%.

Yes - that is what I meant, Spellpower. So increasing spell power by 2 increases the strength of the spells by 2%. On the other hand, increasing magic by 1 when my magic is 40 would increase the power of the spells by 2.5%. Is that a valid comparison when comparing equipment attributes?

Errr no. 1 point in magic is equal to 1 point in spellpower. They're basically the same thing.
Having a magic of 40 already gives you a spellpower of 30 (40 - 10), so your spells are already doing +30% damage/healing. Adding 1 point in Magic OR Spellpower will have the exact same effect on your damage/healing.
The difference is, Magic, as an attribute, lets you unlock higher level spells, increases your mental resistance and lets you equip better items. Increasing spellpower (the stat derived from Magic) just increases damage/healing.
