So I finally buy and download the game, and after starting it up for some reason I am getting an incredibly low fps when I know my system can handle it. I can run crysis, Dragon Age,  and all kind of other games on pretty much max settings and still have a playable fps. With Mass Effect 2.... Im getting about an average fps of 3-4.... just on the menus...

I updated my video card drivers just yesterday, but its been a while since I've updated my sound card drivers. Even though the sound sounds fine (I can usually just hear the noises on load up, but those do go kinda weird sometimes), could an old sound card driver cause a problem like this one?

Heres some of my system specs that might be relevant at all:

  • vid card: ATI Radeon HD 4770
  • Processor : AMD Athlon 64 X2 4600+
  • Physical Memory : 2048 MB DDR2-SDRAM
  • Mainboard : Asus NODUSM3
  • Monitor Type : LG Electronics W2252 (22 inch)
If theres any more info you might need to help me solve this please tell me. Mass Effect 1 was probably one of my favorite games of all time, so you can imagine how much I probably wanted to crush my computer when I realized I was looking at more of a slide-show than a game :(.

Thanks for the help.

No need to crush your PC :)

I have an ATI 4890 graphics card on a Phenom II X4 system, and had a similar problem on the game Dirt 2. Game-play was fine but menus were heavily sluggish. A driver update solved my problem. ME 2 just unlocked on steam and started downloading it. Tomorrow I will see if the same problem repeat or not. But problem with Dirt 2 clearly showed that it was a driver issue. This is also most likely so, and ATI will probably provide a new update soon.

What about cutscenes as well? The first cutscene with the sun runs just fine, but once it starts to show the two people standing there the fps drops again.

Sounds like it might be bad drivers or a bad install of the game. You meet the system requirements and have atleast a duel core cpu so theres not much reasion it doesn't run smooth.

You didn't post what OS you have installed and if its Vista or 7 then 2 gb of ram might be a bit low for the game.

You also didn't post what res you are trying to run the game at.

I would recommend running the config tool and letting it set your ingame options for you and see if it helps any. If it does you can then go back in and turn things up one at a time tell you find what is causing you to lose out on the fps.

Just curious, Estou, why no SP3? Lots of HDD failure/corruption hotfixes in there.

Also what HDD do you have? How old is it and what speed and when was the last time you defraged?

Estou this is a problem literal hundrerds of other players are facing. SOme suspect it might be a single-core issue, but there are plenty of dual-core owners who are having an identical problem. One of the Bio boys says that the second patch (the first patch will be releasing within the next day or so) will be focused on fixing that issue. Until then, all any of us can really do is either wait to be able to play the game it was meant to be played with that hotfix, or suffer through the unbareable cinematics (it smoothes out during gameplay). The choice is yours.

Redshaw88 just curious, but where did you read about the patch?

Np.

Read the last two posts; they're talking about this issue and the one where the game freezes at the rendered loading screen.

Ech. You might seriously consider waiting. I decided to suffer abit, got hooked and now I'm at the climax of the game which is FANTASTIC but filled with now-ruined cut scenes. It seriously detracts from the intensity. :(

Did you accidentally leave AA turned on in your Catalyst Control Center?

No offense or anything, but it's a laptop...it probably has a crippled, watered down entry level graphic chip for general use, not gaming.

You can't compare one graphic engine to another. Just because your computer can play one game doesn't mean it'll play another. Unreal Engine 3 is a bit more taxing than MW2.

Regardless, more detailed system specifications would really help in this occasion.

I'm having an issue very much like this. i start the game perfectly, no problem at all and then sometimes (3 out of 4 times) the FPS drop to about 5-10... and the game becomes unplayable.

First thing i did was to check for a memory leak, i played Dragon Age Origins and had the memory leak problem, so i know what to look for. at first the increase in memory was nothing mayor, from 400 to 600 and the CPU activity stayed below 65% so i discarded it. I still tried to do the suggested fix for DAO and i turned off one of the cores then turned it back on, that didn't work, i tried with only one core (it did the trick for DAO) it failed miserably also. what i dont get is that i've played up to 7 hours straight and the game works just fine and then the next day after about 30 min it dies...

I've looked everywhere, there are no fixes i could find, maybe someone here has a better idea? sigh.. i love this game and I would love to play it but this glitch is BS and it's getting on my nerves.

I have all the DLCs, installed they work perfectly, I also uninstalled everything and reinstalled it without the DLC to see if that could interfere with no different results.

edit:

ME 2 video settings:

Aspect Ratio: 16:10
Resolution:1680x1050
High Q Bloom: off
Film Grain: on
Motion Blur: off
Dynamic shadows: off
Light environment shadows: On
Number of cinematic lights: 2
Use Spherical Harmonic Lightning: off
Anisotropic Filter: off

i set the video card to only use AA if the program supports it, since ME 2 doesn't provide an option I'm guessing its not being used.

my rig:

Processor: Intel Core (2) Duo 2.80 GHz

OS: Windows 7 Home Premium (64 bit)

Memory: 6 Gigs

Graphics Card: ATI Mobility Radeon HD 4670 (1 Gig)

My stuff meets the reqs as far as i know, I've also tried running Game Booster to help with memory leaks or w/e and it doesn't change a thing.

Super desperate here, hope someone can give me a new direction to poke at,,,

PS: all drivers are the latest, for everything.

I have a similar problem.

My system specs are:

Windows 7 64 bit

ATI HD5850 Saphire 2gb

Amd Phenom II X4 950

4GB RAM VIPER II

500gb HDD

I have all driver updated.

I play with all settings high and 8x antialiasing, 1280 x 1024.

And Mass Effect works very slow.

I updated my motherboard.

And all fps were better,

But not perfect.

Sometime 60 fps

sometimes 30 fps.

I know that feel- occasionally (on several games) I get heavy fps drop
Amd sixcore, 3.2 ghz
msi gtx 560ti OC
8GB ram
Win 7 64 bit

--> sometimes very low fps (ironically fraps shows me I have 30-60 fps while I watch my game seeming to have 3 seconds pert frame- yes SECONDS per FRAME)

Right, this may not be your problem but it is a common cause of massive FPS drops. If you have ANYTHING running that can use an overlay during gameplay, such a a temperature monitor or an FPS monitor or an overclocking utility, stop it. Even if it is set not to show the overlay, it can cause this issue. Don't quit Origin of course (or the Steam client for Steam games etc.). That overlay has been tested and is designed to work with ME2.

This advice can be applied to many games, if you get a massive FPS drop. The drop is usually very dramatic though, this is not usually a cause of smaller FPS dips.
