Apparently the only way to save her is to do so directly after her abduction.
If that is through the Omega-4 relay, then I want to prepare some more.
So, my question is: Can I trigger the Kelly abduction part? Or does it just happen? Like will it happen only if I land on a certain planet? Or will it happen when I reach Level 20 or whatever?

Not true, you can go any time to save them.

Just don't do the IFF mission until you're absolutely ready and you'll be fine. To save the crew (and Kelly's the first to die) you have to go to the relay immediately after the abduction event.

For me she wasn't the first to die.Mokinokaro wrote...
If you take too long, the crew starts being killed off actually.

Eventually The Illusion Man will give you the quest, it's part of the main story.FoFoZem wrote...

It was a bit weird though, Chakwas was apparently the only survivor, because that's what everyone said and she was the only one I saw getting freed from those pods. And back on the ship, she was the only crew member I could find as I wandered around. But, in that cutscene where I just saved her, there was another random guy stood next to her. I had no idea who he was and no one acknowledged him being there. Maybe a random colonist or something, judging my how he was dressed. I figured it was a glitch.
Next playthrough, I'm leaving the IFF mission until I have everything done. Then I figure I'll just keep landing on random planets until my crew gets abducted, then I'll immediately head after them. Hopefully, I'll get them back if I do it that way.

No, but according to the other poster if you don't immediatly jump to the next main mission your crew starts to die. I can't confirm or deny that.FoFoZem wrote...
So that's essentially the cut-off for being able to safely upgrade and prepare?

I could be wrong, but I think I remember it differently to that. The way I remember it playing out, was that one random time when I chose to leave the ship (I was trying to dock at the Citadel), it started the cutscene where they first told me they'd finished integrating the IFF. That's when EDI told me she needed to configure it properly. We all left the ship on the shuttle, the Collectors kidnapped the crew, we returned and were told the IFF was now ready to go.Matterialize wrote...
If I recall, when your crew is kidnapped, EDI tells you that she still needs time to configure the IFF properly. During this time, you can still fly around doing stuff. When you get a message (I think Joker tells you) that the IFF is ready, THEN you must go through the relay asap to prevent deaths. I believe one crew member or some colonist will always die, to show the player what's happening to the abducted people.
If I'm right, there was no gap of time between the crew being kidnapped and the IFF being ready for you to use. So if you don't go through the relay immediately after your Joker-walks-around segment, people start dying.
As for who dies if you go immediately - I recall seeing posts indicating it's a colonist called Lilith. Which means it isn't my crew, which is good enough for me.
