I did not figure this out but someone said in another thread that it has something to do with the Pyjack quest. That's the quest where you shoot the monkeys with the turret. Here is what this person said.

RicAlmighty wrote...

I can CONFIRM that doing the Pyjack quest AFTER Grunt's loyalty quest is complete will lock his Fortification.

I played through this part 3 times to confirm and the only time fortification locked was if I did the Pyjack quest after gaining Grunt's loyalty.

I even got his loyalty, returned to the Normandy, and then went back with different squad mates, did the monkey quest then and Grunt stayed fine.

So, basically do NOT do the monkey quest after Grunt is loyal and in your party and you should avoid this glitch. Still needs to be patched though.

For me I did the Pyjack mission BEFORE the loyalty mission and it still locked. On my first playthrough I did the Pyjack mission long after I finished Grunt's loyalty mission and it did not lock.

From reading these posts it seems like there is an issue with trying to tackle both Mordin's and Grunt's quest right after each other. That hunch about the pyjak sounds promising as well.

That's what happened to me. I went to do Mordin and Grunt at the same time. Did Grunt, and his skill unlocked, but when I had to select my crew to venture off to 'save' Mordin's friend, I chose Grunt and his skill was locked from that point on.

I don't think Mordin's loyalty mission has anything to do with it but I could be wrong. Like I said before, I did the Pyjack turret quest and then I did Grunt's loyalty mission. After Grunt's mission and before I started Mordin's, the fortifcation did not work. I think it has to do with the Pyjack quest with the turret. But whatever causes it to not work let's hope it's fixed soon. :)

As reported before, I have run into that problem.
I remember I had taken Mordin and Grunt with me on Tuchanka, as I had both their loyalty missions to perform there.
And I am quite sure I spoke with Shaman after completing the mission (I remember to have been curious to se how his speech will have been altered).
I also got the "Gig game hunter" achievement killing the Threswer Maw during the Rite of Passage, as well as Grunt's loyalty achievement.
He is loyal by all standards, except that the Fortification power never unlocked...

I had a real problem after I did the Jack's loyality mission and Lost Mirinada's Loyality. I was told that you patch things up if you Paragon or Renagade was maxed out. I had my Paragon scaled maxed out and I couldn't get the option on the left of wheel telling her to be the better woman. That really erked me.

I have the same problem and it's bugging the hell out of me. I have full paragon points and the charm option is unavailable in the Jack/Miranda fight, and afterwards to charm the person you did not side with to get them loyal again.

Woah, I thought my game disk was just bad or something when the sound cut, so is it an actual bug? I have the xbox collector's edition, but I went on Youtube I saw clips with the sound, so I thought it was just me. If that sound cutting out thing can be fixed with a patch, that would be awesome, it's a real bummer to have the drama reach a climax in that confrontation only to have the sound cut for the last few lines and only come back after Shep makes a decision.

I will throw a bit of a wrench into theworks. I took Mordin and Grunt and did Mordin's quest first. Then did Grunts', without leaving the planet. All went well. got the achievement for the big game hunter and grunt's loyalty and it's all working okay.

but right after I did his, and then I spoke to the Shaman, and then I went to the store. I talked to the guy about doing the pyjack quest, and for wahtever reason (brain fart) I bought some things before shooting the pyjacks. Got all the pyjacks and I couldn't close the quest. Couldn't get a discount. went off to find the guy for the turbine and came back, and then I was able to close the pyjack quest.

So the pyjack quest might have something to do with it because *that* quest is the one that bugged for me. I'll have to check to see if I can fortify. I don't know that I've tried.

Yep, just got the Fortification bug. Interestingly, Grunt can't take the power, but I gave it to my Shep with advanced training... seemed to be his style.

Lets see... landed with Mordin, did the pyjack quest first, changed Mordin for Jack during the actual Rite (I figured she'd get more of a kick out of it... ) . Killed the Thresher Maw, took out Worf...er... the Krogan from the other clan. Note: Once I talked to the Shaman, he gave Grunt a reward. A little later the IM screen came up and thats when Shepherd said his "this looks interesting" line about getting the upgrade, which seemed a little odd and jarring.

Then I was back standing in front of the Shaman (unusual after an IM mission report screen). Grunt is loyal, changed his outfit, and like I said, I even gave Shep the Fortification power. I went back to the ship, did a little mining, a little flirting, then back to the planet for Mordin, and thats when I noticed the power was still locked for Grunt. Don't know if it was ever unlocked.

I'm very glad to hear that he's still actually "loyal" in the sense that he can survive the ending. I'm sorta fond of the bugger.

Hey everybody. Sorry I've been gone so long. We've been trying to figure this one out for awhile now and we just cannot reproduce this here in the office using the info we've got. If anyone has a PC save though we can dissect that and hopefully solve the problem. So if you have a save and feel like sharing PM me and I'll get you an e-mail for Christina Norman and we can probably put this problem to bed.

I've been having the same glitch as everyone else in this post with Grunt. I can tell you that I had Mordin with me when I completed his quest. I also played pop the pyjak after gaining Grunt's loyalty as well. I cannot assist with saves unfortunately as I have the Xbox 360 version.

Of course, if any of you on the BW team happen to have an Xport 360 lying around, I could work around that, as I bought one a few years back to move all my original Xbox saves. I suppose I could send in the save from my MU that way and you could set it in place the same way (if you guys had that unit yourselves, of course).

I have the same glitch as well. I completed the loyalty mission and it did not unlock the ability. When I did the quest I had Miranda with me. I did not have any skill points available on grunt. I don't know if that is a problem or not.

I love bioware and the mass effect series have been my favorite games however I was using grunt cause it fits my play style now I feel I can't play the game how I want.

That's how it's supposed to work. That's one of the hardest persuades in the game and some persuades are easier to Paragon persuade than renegade persuade. It all depends on who you're talking to and who you're trying to persuade.

Howdy folks.  I'm also a victim of the Grunt loyalty glitch and I thought I'd get on here and share my experience as accurately as possible.

Ok, I'd like to start off by saying that so far I have beaten the game twice, but only on the second playthrough did I experience the Grunt glitch.  I'm going to try to recount the first playthrough experience as best I can, though I didn't pay too much mind to the nitty gritty since there was no issue for me at the time. Also, this is for the Xbox 360 version.

1st Playthrough: Soldier, Veteran, Paragon, Fresh ME2 Character (did not import from ME1)
In this playthrough, I received Grunt's Loyalty, complete with Fortification (which I maxed for him) and his alternate outfit.  I never lost his loyalty nor did I have any other Loyalty issues with any other party member.

I specifically remember picking up Grunt and leaving him in the tank for one mission (rescuing Jack), and then after that mission, I decided to open the tank.
Grunt's Loyalty Mission/Tuchanka
  • I can't remember if I did his or Mordin's Loyalty Mission first, though I do remember that I had them both active at the same time.
  • Before I completed the pyjack quest, or any other quest on Tuchanka, I bought probably everything from the store from the guy who gives you the pyjack quest.
  • I did complete the pyjack quest before I did either of Mordin's or Grunt's Loyalty Missions
  • I killed the Thresher Maw and Gatatog Uvenk
  • I talked to the Shaman immediately after Grunt's loyalty quest.
  • I can't remember to 100% certainty, but I don't think I had Mordin in the group when I did Grunt's loyalty mission.
  • Sorry but I can't remember what the Illusive Man report was after this mission.
2nd Playthrough: Sentinel, Hardcore, Renegade, Imported a lvl 50 character from Mass Effect 1
In this playthrough, I know that I received Grunt's Loyalty and his alternate costume, but his Fortification was greyed out, saying that he was not loyal.  It did not effect the outcome of the final battle.  Unfortunately, I know if I had his full loyalty early on, and then I lost it, or what happened in a time frame there, because I didn't use him for awhile after I did his Loyalty mission.

In this playthrough, I released Grunt from the tank as soon as I got him onboard.

Grunt's Loyalty Mission/Tuchanka
  • Again, I had both of the loyalty missions for Mordin and Grunt active at the same time, though I can't remember whos I did first.
  • This time, I did not buy anything from the guy that gives you the pyjack quest until after I completed Grunt's loyalty mission and got the discount from him.
  • I did do the pyjack quest before either of the Loyalty Missions.
  • Since I saved Wrex in this ME1 playthrough, he was the Urdnot Chief this time on Tuchanka.
  • Something I noticed on this playthrough that I know I did not encounter in the first playthrough was that there was an ambassador from some small Krogan clan, upstairs in the hallway next to where the Shaman is.  If you walk straight down the hall (passing the Shaman, him on your right) you encounter these guys.  Talked to them, took a Renegade option with them, and explored all conversation points with this group before doing any of the loyalty missions, which means I think I did Grunt's loyalty mission first.
  • I talked to the Shaman again immediately after completing Grunt's Loyalty Mission.
  • I also killed the Thresher Maw and Gatatog Uvenk again in this playthrough.
Final Thoughts/Conclusions
I'm really sorry I wasn't able to remember exactly who I had in my group during Grunt's Rite for both of the playthroughs.  I don't think I had Mordin in the group either time, but I'm not 100% sure on that.  I do know that I took Morinth with me on Mordin's Loyalty Mission in the 2nd playthrough (in the first playthrough, I kept Samara, though I don't think I took her on these missions).

On that note, on my first playthrough, I did not have the Paragon/Renegade score to resist Morinth completely, and the sound glitch took place, and there was no sound during Morinth and Samara's encounter.
During the second playthrough, I had enough Renegade score to give Morinth a Renegade response, and I had sound (I know i had the TV volume lower than on the first playthrough, don't know if that matters or not).

Anyway, I'm not sure how conclusive all of this info really is, though if it were up to me to give a conjecure, I would say that it involves this being an imported character from Mass Effect1.  Taking into account other peoples' experiences, I would also say that it may have something to do with that pyjack quest and also dealing with Mordin's loyalty mission.  If indeed the order in which I did Mordin and Grunt's loyalty Missions were different on the two playthroughs, I'd say that'd be pretty significant info.  Sorry I can't remember better =/  I'm currently working my way through the game on Insanity with the same Imported character from Mass Effect 1.  I'm going to take detailed notes of everything this time around.  I'll report back when I have something.

Thanks for keeping up with this thread everyone.  I'm happy to know that I'm not the only one in this boat, and I'm extremely happy to see that others are working to help BioWare with a resolution to this glitch.

Good morning everyone!
Ok, I have a new report.  Here's a log of what I did yesterday. Hopefully this helps.

Imported ME1 Shephard,  Mostly Paragon, Vanguard, Insanity.

Have Mordin’s Loyalty Mission, but not Grunt’s.  Doing Mordin’s First

Have Mordin and Thane in party.

1st Talked to Wrex.

2nd Talked To Ratch, got pyjack quest, pet
varren, bought nothing.

3rd Completed and Turned in Pyjack quest. Didn’t
buy anything at the store.

    (interesting note
for 2nd and 3rd.
When I approached Ratch, he said, “Looks like Urz has finally found
someone to follow around.  This happened
before I even talked to him both times.
Hadn’t fed Urz yet.  Wasn’t following
me around.)

4th Explored all convo options with Chief Scout
and took Truck to find the Salarian captive.

5th Completed Mordin’s Loyalty Mission.  Also completed the Mechanic and scout quests
on the way.

6th Talked to Chief Scout, Turned in Mechanic
quest, talked to Forlak in his shop.
Bought nothing.

7th Talked to Mordin onboard, Got Loyalty quest
for Grunt. Brought him to speak with Wrex first.

8th Talked to the Ambassador, Renegade Response,
full conversation options.

9Th Spoke to Shaman, headbutted Uvenk, began
Rite.

10th Killed Thresher maw and Gatatog.  Note: Both Members (Grunt, Thane) Died during
the Thresher fight, and the thresher bugged and stopped attacking.  Just sat there while I gunned it down.

11th Grunt accepted into Urdnot clan.  Said ‘Goodbye’ to shaman.

12th Illusive man says grunts stable, fort,
shotgun upgrade, outfit unlocked for grunt, closed window.

13th After closing Illusive Man screen I was
still standing in front of the Shaman. Checked Fort and it is unlocked with 1
point already in it.

14th Had full conversation with Shaman.  Fort remains unlocked.

15th Talked to Ratch, fed Varren, Talked to
Forlak.  Bought things from both
stores.  Fort still active before
boarding Normandy.

16th Talked to Grunt, Thane, Garrus (Got his
loyalty mission), turned in the quest to the cook, talked to Joker and Kelly,
did some upgrades, then Landed on Tuchanka again with Grunt and Jack.  Still had Fortification.

17th Took Grunt to capture the IFF Relay.  Still wholly loyal with points in
Fortification.  He is a monster =)

Final Thoughts/Conclusions
Taking
into account my previous playthroughs, others' experiences, and this
playthrough, I expect that this issue is strongly tied to Mordin's
loyalty quest.

If I had to narrow it down further, I would say
that the glitch has to do with the order in which you do Mordin and
Grunt's loyalty quest, and probably doesn't have much to do with having
them active at the same time.  Of course, that's just speculation on my
part.

Hopefully, this recount helps people avoid Grunt's
loyalty glitch.  In an effort to avoid Grunt's Loyalty glitch, I
recommend that the Mass Effect 2 community completes Mordin's Loyalty
Mission before completing Grunt's.

Happy Hunting everyone! "May your enemies be strong enough to keep your sharp." ../../../images/forum/emoticons/smile.png

It seems I also have the Grunt's loyalty bug...

I have completed, some time ago (so I do not remember all the context... sorry I can't be more specific), Grunt's loyalty quest (The Rite) successfully, was told that I had gained his loyalty and, wheen I look at the "Team status" screen, I see Grunt's marked as loyal (with the circle marker under his feet and the ability to switch between 2 different looks) and Grunt's "fortification" abilty is greyed out (but it could just be that I did not assign squad points there yet). I cannot recall anything abnormal when finishing the quest.

Though, a few minutes ago, as I went back to Omega in order to discuss with the Salarian, Ish, who asked to bring back "packages" from the Citadel and Illium, I selected Grunt as part of my team and noticed, on the detailed Grunt screen (where you normaly can assign squad points, right after selecting the team), that his loyalty status was only "normal" and his special "fortification" ability locked, with the reason "... is not loyal"...

Also, I have resolved the "package delivery" quest by convincing Ish (who is therefore no longer in the Omega public area) that attempting to meddle in Aria's business was likely not a very healthy activity, got a reward (40 xp + money), but the "assignment" remained open in my log... Another minor bug apparently (no real impact though, at the contrary of the loyalty thing)...

I had the same package for Ish bug as well, I was pulling my hair out running all over Omega trying to figure out why it didnt complete if there was something else I had to do till I figured it was bugged.

And also I get the Grunt loyalty bug as well, just him.  Shows as loyal in status (can change uniform, has the loyal halo) but I cant put points in his special skill, says he isnt loyal.

To the poster directly above me, mordins quest was the first one I did on both my me2 playthroughs.  Grunt still bugged.

I had the Ish bug happen to me too, where the quest remains active. It seems to me that it happens in the circumstance where you've got both packages, but go into dialogue to persuade him to give up his ambitions. It seems there's a small detail missing here to link the bits of the script up such that you're left with one package over, or alternatively that the dialogue scripts aren't linked up to what you've done prior to talking to him.

I am also experiencing the Grunt loyalty skill glitch.

It is happening on my second playthrough as sentinel. It may have to do with the "kill monky" quest because I remember in the first playthrough that I did not do that side mission till after I was done with both mordin's and grunt's quest, and I explored around the galaxy a bit.

Second playthrough I did it right after grunt's loyalty with him still in the party.

Hey guys, I'd love to help. Please tell me exactly what levels you completed after getting the loyalty but before you lost the loyalty. I'll do my best to figure out what the problem is and how we can fix it, if we can fix it. If you can remember what it said in the level completion screen(the one with the illusive man) in regards to the characters loyalty that would help me as well.

So, 3 months after the thread start, no fix?

My 3rd run and I regretefully find the glitch. Always did Mordin and Grunt quests w/out problem. This time I only inverted the order.  Grunt first and was going to do Mordin's but with the bugged locked power, decided to search abt it first.

I did misclick when trying to talk to the Chief Scout and ended up playing another round on that blast the monkeys mini game. No idea if it is related but... 3 months should be enough for Bioware to fix this. WHAT THE FRAK IS GOING ON with BioWare?

All my BW games are patched to perfection, before they joined with this lousy EA, while all my EA games ARE BUGGED and never patched, with one exception, BF1942. (German devs?)
