I've been holding off Windows 7 still. I will make the move when it's a lil more mature. I hate moving to new operating systems. The whole formatting/reinstalling part really kills me..

It actually was really easy for 7. If you upgrade to the same version of 7 as you use for Vista (Ultimate 64-bit, etc), it's just an OS upgrade; all of your programs and data remain present. You have to do a fresh installation if you're going from XP, or if you're upgrading your 32-bit Vista to 64-bit 7/Home to Professional.

As for the maturity, people I worked with had been using it since the early beta was out, and they had no problems. RC1 was smooth, and the marketed version runs like an absolute dream.

People keep consoles turned on all the time, which is the perfect way to lower their lifespan.

I guess the large amount of time invested in Fable 2 was a bad thing. Played it for hours and hours for weeks. And it was always stressing out the machine.

Well, I guess you mean to do all the usual maintenance thingy (HD reformat every 6 months, virus updates, maintenance routines, etc)... of course, if it's a windows box...  I agree, my Powerbook G4 lasted 7 years with no problems.

Didn't format my HD in 4 years actually. I just run the occasional defrag, don't keep useless files on it when I uninstall something. Pretty un-cumbersome things.

I'm not a fan of spending more money for the same (or inferior) performance. And with Apple you do just that :D

Never had a 360 fail on me.

Mine lasted 4 years before the GPU unexpectedly died on me just recently. It was either Call of Duty or Fable 2 that killed it.

Please please please, continue with the console wars. It makes for an entertaining read.

fable 2 killed mine for sure. i had not a single issue with my 360 until the day i started playing fable 2 then out of no where came the red ring almost immediatly followed up by a re-make scene from office space

ahhh the beating of a printer with a baseball bat... one day im going to do that to our office printer which im constantly fixing.

I've had 1 failure with an xbox and i took ownership of the old pro console when i split with the ex, one fo the original 1st gen ones, traded that in for an elite when they came out and about 4 months ago i got the e74 error on it thank the lord for the 3 year warrenty on those and the rrod sent it off to microsoft and it came back a week later after having a new mobo put in, i know some people have some real horror stories with their xbox's but i have not and for that i am ever thankful

console wars are fun especially when im sat here at my gaming PC discussing the pro's of the xbox it makes me smile inside ^^

Yup! I fancy a console cause it suits our needs. Living with my sisters we're a very social house so being locked in a room with a mountain of computer equipment is a nono. Not that we do everything on one TV either, our bedrooms each have a 30 something inch HDTV with it's own cable connection and DVD player if we feel like self time. But for us a high-powered PC is impractical and antisocial. My sisters each have Macbooks and I have a computer that's about a year old, spent maybe $1500 on it all said and the thing hasn't even been turned on since Christmas when the emails started flooding in and reading them on a cell was too much work and (at the time) my PS3 wasn't connected to the internet. So yea, it's very much a preference thing and I said earlier, everyone has an opinion. No one is right and no one is wrong

A PC is antisocial? You know that PCs don't need your door to be closed, or even locked to be turned on? :D

I guess russian people transplanted in canada like stereotypes :wizard:

Clock is ticking for a massive windows XP crash... well, perhaps you mean the game performance win vs. apple, because I don't use the Apple for gaming, despite the fact I can run many ported games on that old powerbook with no problems... and yes you a gamer, that explain lots... :)

No of course not. But in my experience (of course this has no bearing on the majority of anyone since I live in one pocket of a huge world) as soon as someone's fingers touch that keyboard they're in a whole different world. It's like processing the sound of my voice take 50 times longer than it would if they were sitting on the couch with a PS3 controller. I think it might have something to do with facing a wall at immediate range. Maybe it has a mesmerizing effect. I'll have to think on this

yeah yeah, too bad that the massive windows XP crash never came. And i mean every kind of performance.
Being a gamer doesn't mean not using one's PC for other things, you know?
My PC's run Photoshop CS4 Extended and Video/audio editing programs just as well as any Mac, or actually better, and cost half as much.

You may be eager to waste your money in Steve Jobs' retirement fund. I prefer to pay a fair price for what I get, instead of paying for an overhyped (but very niche) brand. The little apple on the lid is very cute, but not worth paying double for what is inside :D

"I'm a Mac, and I love to bash PCs because I know that my brand will never sell and never be supported as much as them.. oh damn..." :wizard:

As for the Mac thing. Sure, Macs often have lesser performance stats to Windows machines. Why? Well, as it was explained to me by my much more tech savvy friend Tom, Mac programs require less resources to run (at which point he launched into a long speech about programming nuances that made my head hurt) and therefore can perform better and with more stability with less resource. I know on the Macbook the few games we have run beautifully and the load times are orgasmic in comparison to the rather slow load times of a Windows computer.

@ Abriael - How do you get XP Pro to recognise more than 2BG of RAM? I bought 8 GB of DDR3 for my PC last year and it only reads 2. One of the reasons I'm not anxious about putting too much work into the thing

XP 32 bit recognizes up to 3.something GB. If you want more, you need 64 bit.

The fact that it recignizes only 2, though, is weird. Your memory benches might be defective, or your motherboard might be having a problem. Are you sure  it supports the kind of ram you got? Older motherboards don't support very new ram models.

Keschen 1) How do I tell the difference between 32 and 64 and keschen 2) My memory.. benches are fine. We tried putting them in different slots to see if we could at least get 4 and no dice. It's 4 sticks in units of 2GB. But if I actually get around to making it a working machine again, I'm probably getting a new processor which would require a new board. Suggestions?

Everyone. including BioWare, has their fingers crossed hoping so.

Keschen? Do you mean 'Question?' or are you just being adorably cute with your lolcat speek?

I totally agree!  Give me a refund for the points I bought back in mid Dec!  As of today's debacle, I have shelved the game and moved onto to RISEN........  Heck I'm even thinking abt returning ME2 CE since it is a flop in my opinion!  It is an FPS more than an RPG, and I don't like playing FPS..  So BioWare, I was once a loyal subscriber, but as a PC user I have just been slapped in the face once to many times..  Thanks, but NO Thanks!Image IPB

Right-click on "My Computer" and select "Properties". It should specificy the OS type.

Mkay. It says 32. So next time I'm at OTV I'll ask the guys about getting 64 (provided I care about it at that point in time) Nice to know though, thank you :)

No problem.

However, good luck getting XP; Microsoft doesn't really market it anymore, so you're probably going to see just 7 everywhere in stores; your best bet is at an online retailer.
