Hey Everyone,

I downloaded Mass Effect 2 last night on steam. Everything downloads fine, and I'm able to load the Launcher Spalsh screen, but I'm unable to launch the actual game. When I attempt to launch, nothing happens. I hit ctrl+alt+del, and I notice that it is in the running processes stuck at between 5-6000k . In fact, I can launch multiple times, and I get several MassEffect2.exe32* processes running, all at 5-6000k. I've configured the game to display the same as my desktop, reinstalled the game, and updated all drivers. Nothing has worked, thus far. Also, Dragon Age will no longer run now, all non-Bioware/EA games are working fine.

System Specs:

Chipset: AMD Phenom™ 9750 Quad-Core Processor (4 CPUs), ~2.4GHz
Memory: 8192MB RAM
DirectX:  DirectX 11
Video Card: NVIDIA GeForce 9500 GT

I've scoured the internet for a solution to this problem, but have found nothing. Please help, if you've got a work around for this.:(

I think I am in the same boat as you, are you getting the error message:

Mass Effect 2 has encountered a problem and needs to close. We are sorry for the inconvenience.?

I'm getting no error message at all. Just the loading symbol next to the pointer, then nothing.

Verify the install by using steams internal tool. Manually navigate to your ME2 Steam folder and Launch the ME2 Launcher. Ensure you've done the first boot setup and that all your settings are compatible with your computer. You should also reboot your computer after decrypting any game (or installing any software for that matter). You should then check your processes, if you have restrictive anti-virus or malware running in the background it may be preventing the game from launching. Make sure you  have the latest motherboard, videocard and sound drivers for your computer.

If none of these help post your computer specs. My game wouldn't launch till I selected a higher resolution then 800x600

SirDingus, i have the same issue, and have gone to great lengths to "workaround" this issue. i have tried xp 32bit, XP 64bit, different video card, i went out and bought the box retail versoin at a local store. same issues. at this time i have completely formatted my sytem, fresh instal with focus on installing ONLY the latest drivers from all manufacturers that i use. still nothin... just the masseffect2.exe launches to the Processes (task manager) lockes up 13% of my processor time, and strangely every 5-15 min it will transfer the process to another thred, but still no i/o activity?

I have tried every "fix" that people have used for all the different bugs this game has. (not recommended!)

I have no firewalls passthrough and direct routing through my dsl router/hub...

i dont think i have ever seen such a disasterous game launch of this magnetude in a long while... im losing all hope on this game i have waited sooo long for... QQ

anyway lmk if you guys figure anything out, i cant even get an automated responce from Steam or EA-Bioware

I also have this problem, i'm not even going to bother with a retail version. I'll just get a crack copy because they always seem to work for me.

I am getting the same error on launch as jsimez. I have yet to see the Main Menu.

"Mass Effect 2 has encountered a problem and needs to close. We are sorry for the inconvenience"

Not very useful, but at least you apologised. Anyway I'm going to see if a No-DVD crack lets me play my legitimately bought game.

I've tried all fixes to date, nothing has worked. I put a question into Steam, but I still haven't seen an official comment on this problem. I guess that getting DLC working was a higher priority. Understandable, but I need to play in order to decide whether or not I want to pony up more cash for a seat warmer for this Edsel.

Uninstall game, re-install using one DVD-Rom drive if you have 2. Got mine working.
