Please feel free to post replies with additional tips, but any discussion of the scanning game should be directed to one of the other scanning game threads.
Tip 1: scan intermitantly
Your scanner moves 5x as fast when you're not scanning (holding LT). Try repeating the following instead:
- Scan for a half second
- Stop scanning and move your scanner
You move your scanner with the Left Thumbstick. You rotate the planet with the Right Thumbstick. You can combine these movements by moving your scanner to the left or right edge of the planet, and then pushing both thumbsticks in that direction. Combined with Tip 1 you can scan a large area quickly.
Tip 3: 'moderate' means 'move on' soon
Watch the mineral indicator (rich, good, moderate, poor, depleted). Usually it's a good idea to focus on planets that are more minearly heavy (rich, good). Once the mineral content gets low (moderate, poor) it's usually more efficient to move on to find new planets rather than try to squeeze every last mineral out of this one.
You may want to ignore this rule if you're looking for a specific resource (like eezo) and you find a planet that has it, in those cases mining a planet out could be the right choice.
Tip 4: resources are not random
Resources tend to be found on areas that are visually similar. If you find a big resource deposit look where you found it and try scanning areas that are visually similar. You can find resources faster that way then simply "scanning everything".
Tip 5: upgrade your scanner
Your scanner will move twice as fast if you upgrade it and you can upgrade it as soon as your research lab opens. Talk to your squad and ask them about Normandy upgrades.
Tip 6: Only send a probe when the resource graph is showing a spike
You'll always get some resources when you launch a probe, but unless the resource graph is showing a significant spike you wont' get much. Save your probes for big spikes, and you'll be making less trips to the fuel depot.
Tip 7: take an anomaly break
When you find an anomaly, take a break from mining and investigate. Who knows what you'll find?
