I'm going to post some tips for the scanning mini-game that can help you find minerals more quickly. Don't read this post if you'd prefer to experiment with the gameplay, and learn on your own the 'best' way to scan.

Please feel free to post replies with additional tips, but any discussion of the scanning game should be directed to one of the other scanning game threads.

Tip 1: scan intermitantly

Your scanner moves 5x as fast when you're not scanning (holding LT). Try repeating the following instead:
  • Scan for a half second
  • Stop scanning and move your scanner
Tip 2: rotate the planet for additional speed

You move your scanner with the Left Thumbstick. You rotate the planet with the Right Thumbstick. You can combine these movements by moving your scanner to the left or right edge of the planet, and then pushing both thumbsticks in that direction. Combined with Tip 1 you can scan a large area quickly.

Tip 3: 'moderate' means 'move on' soon

Watch the mineral indicator (rich, good, moderate, poor, depleted). Usually it's a good idea to focus on planets that are more minearly heavy (rich, good). Once the mineral content gets low (moderate, poor) it's usually more efficient to move on to find new planets rather than try to squeeze every last mineral out of this one.

You may want to ignore this rule if you're looking for a specific resource (like eezo) and you find a planet that has it, in those cases mining a planet out could be the right choice.

Tip 4: resources are not random

Resources tend to be found on areas that are visually similar. If you find a big resource deposit look where you found it and try scanning areas that are visually similar. You can find resources faster that way then simply "scanning everything".

Tip 5: upgrade your scanner

Your scanner will move twice as fast if you upgrade it and you can upgrade it as soon as your research lab opens. Talk to your squad and ask them about Normandy upgrades.

Tip 6: Only send a probe when the resource graph is showing a spike

You'll always get some resources when you launch a probe, but unless the resource graph is showing a significant spike you wont' get much. Save your probes for big spikes, and you'll be making less trips to the fuel depot.

Tip 7: take an anomaly break

When you find an anomaly, take a break from mining and investigate. Who knows what you'll find?

Thanks. I eventually started tapping LT when scanning to increase speed. I'm a bit confused what you mean by look for places that are visually similar. What do you mean by that?

=== Answer from Christina ====

Here's an example. Lets say you're scanning a planet that's mostly covered by water but has some land. You find a large platinum deposit on land at a white (ice covered) area. I'd look for more platinum deposits in similar ice covered areas.

I third that. Talk to -- spoiler removed -- asap for scanner upgrades. Ever since the upgrade, I haven't had any difficulty. As Christina said, blipping the trigger while turning the planet is very effective.

Yeah, I just move the cursor around while tapping LT until the indicator spikes. It might be boring to some, but I find scanning to be an acceptable chore for the gain.

Any additional scanning tips for us PC people? Even with upgraded scanning it gets tiresome rotating the planet around and around...

Good tips, I've been scanning only one side of a planet all this time =P . I didn't realize element zero could be found on uncharteds so that will be very helpful. Much thanks.

Its much easier for me to "rapid fire" the left trigger (click click click as fast as possible) as I am rotating the planet. I move the cursor along the grid marks so I dont miss anything. If you hit something, you will see a noticable "bump" on the radar thing. Go back to that spot and search more thoroughly until youve got the thing to full strength.

This.

But if you haven't found the research upgrade for it, or just don't have enough resources to activate it, just rotate the globe while you're scanning, and tap on the left trigger about every second or so. If your scan graph starts to jump anywhere, then slow down. There's no need to comb every square inch of the planets.

**I found gas giants don't really have any eezo, so don't bother wasting your time scanning "moderate" or lower results if the planet is a gas planet. tbh, I don't even bother scanning anything if it's not at least "rich" or "good", and I've been fine on resources.

Found out these tips for myself after scanning a handful of planets. Made the mini-game almost fun at times.
I do have a question though. I often spend a few extra seconds trying to find the point where the graph spikes highest. Is this necessary? Do I harvest more material by probing at the highest apex I can find per material spot? (Sorry if this doesn't make a lot of sense.)

=== Answer from Christina ===

Yes you find more resources if you adjust for the maximum resources in the resource graph.

I've found that you can still find some reserves when a planet is marked "depleted". When you find even a minor rise in an element's table in the chart and the Xbox controller doesn't vibrate, you can still extract from that area.

I must have depleted six planets yesterday.

Don't just send probes down to any little movement you get on the scanner. You're still paying for those probes ya know. Might want to make sure it's at least worth your investment to extract the resources. It isn't always. I'm never going to send a probe just to recover 200 platinum. Waste of time no matter how thourough you're being. If the scan bar doesn't jump to at least 3/5's of the meter, I don't even acknowledge it. And needless to say, I haven't had any trouble upgrading anything after I find the research for it.

=== Christina says ===

Good tip! Added.

i second that.That's actually a tip 3 of the first post: you don't have to deplete every planet you encounter - there is plenty of resources throughout the game for all the upgrades. I scanned only about half rich planets(ignoring all the rest,except for some eezo), and still had many resources left by the end of the game(about 100k in average).

I had wondered if visual markers would lead to more effective searching.

Thanks for the tips Christina!

Thanks for this info, watching my buddy tediously scan a planet was quite... painful ^^

May I kindly ask, what is the key to spin a planet around on the PC version? It's going to be a killer on the hand if I need to hold onto the right-mouse and move my mouse to spin the planet around... just wondering ^^

I actually love this mini game. What I do is just tap L & move up & down on the left most mart of the planet (the planet moves by itself if you go on the very edge or darkside).

Also,is it bad that I got all my resources to the highest when I first got to utilize the galaxy map?

Are these anomaly's pretty rare, I haven't found one the past few days? Maybe I'm just understanding how they show upon the scanner.

Except that you don't need to scan every little bit of the planet. I pretty much skip anything under good. I have yet to be desperate for resources
