I think my biggest realization was to just move on if the planet isn't Rich in resources. The only thing I have trouble getting high numbers on is eezo but I'm guessing it's intended to be 3 or 4 times as rare as the others.

Are these anomaly's pretty rare, I haven't found one the past few days? Maybe I'm just understanding how they show upon the scanner.

Ya I dont find many Anomoly's either. Maybe I am just scanning all the wrong planets?:?

They're out there.. keep looking. In ME1 I believe every system had a landable planet.... this is not the case with ME2. But then again the side missions aren't just driving across a barren wasteland every time either. I still wish some of the planets were the old-style though.

I'm going to post some tips for the scanning mini-game that can help you find minerals more quickly. Don't read this post if you'd prefer to experiment with the gameplay, and learn on your own the 'best' way to scan.

Please feel free to post replies with additional tips, but any discussion of the scanning game should be directed to one of the other scanning game threads.

Tip 1: scan intermitantly

Your scanner moves 5x as fast when you're not scanning (holding LT). Try repeating the following instead:

  • Scan for a half second
  • Stop scanning and move your scanner
Tip 2: rotate the planet for additional speed

You move your scanner with the Left Thumbstick. You rotate the planet with the Right Thumbstick. You can combine these movements by moving your scanner to the left or right edge of the planet, and then pushing both thumbsticks in that direction. Combined with Tip 1 you can scan a large area quickly.

Tip 3: 'moderate' means 'move on' soon

Watch the mineral indicator (rich, good, moderate, poor, depleted). Usually it's a good idea to focus on planets that are more minearly heavy (rich, good). Once the mineral content gets low (moderate, poor) it's usually more efficient to move on to find new planets rather than try to squeeze every last mineral out of this one.

You may want to ignore this rule if you're looking for a specific resource (like eezo) and you find a planet that has it, in those cases mining a planet out could be the right choice.

Tip 4: resources are not random

Resources tend to be found on areas that are visually similar. If you find a big resource deposit look where you found it and try scanning areas that are visually similar. You can find resources faster that way then simply "scanning everything".

Tip 5: upgrade your scanner

Your scanner will move twice as fast if you upgrade it and you can upgrade it as soon as your research lab opens. Talk to your squad and ask them about Normandy upgrades.

Tip 6: Only send a probe when the resource graph is showing a spike

You'll always get some resources when you launch a probe, but unless the resource graph is showing a significant spike you wont' get much. Save your probes for big spikes, and you'll be making less trips to the fuel depot.

Tip 7: take an anomaly break

When you find an anomaly, take a break from mining and investigate. Who knows what you'll find?

[*]I would like to point out that #3 is not necessarily true. i have depleted a planet from gathering smaller deposits only to eventually find very large (large spike) deposits from further searching.

Thanks Christina. Unfortunately, on my first playthrough I'm depleting everything because I have no idea how many resources I'll actually need for all my researching.

Oh, so that's what the "Good, Poor, etc" status means. I thought it meant I didn't have a lot of resources yet.

It is also worth pointing out that there are far more elements that you can mine than you will actually need for the game. I enjoy the scanning, I think it is fun so I scan until most planets are depleted, but you really do not have to at all. You should see how much stuff I have stockpiled as a result - I should be able to (and I am still on disc one, mind you) upgrade everything I come across. But to those who dislike the scanning, you really do not need to do as much as you think you do. ^_^

One point I have not seen mentioned is that the controller vibrates when you find the sweet spot. The larger finds seem to vibrate stronger. I need to do some anomaly hunting soon though.

this is the technique i use and i find it to be pretty good, basically what i do is run the scanner horizontally along 3 segments of the planet, the middle of the top half, the equator and the middle of the bottom half, while rotating the planet so that i basically do a ring round the planet for each segment. i dont hold down the button but continuously tap the scanner and when i feel a bump i investiage the area. gets it done much faster

I can't stop you from doing that, but I can say it's not necessary! It's not like you can't come back later as well.

As far as figuring out how many resources you need, anyone with a Prima guide should be able to figure that out and post it to the spoilers forum.

Haha, yeah, and when you send a probe down to it EDI's like "Really, Commander?" Followed by "Probing Uranus."

Would it really be that hard to release a patch that just upgrades the speed to a somewhat reasonable one?

Been doing this before I read this. Just rotate both sticks in the same direction following a horizontal line and spam LT until back at starting point then move down to the next. I admit we shouldn't have to be looking for ways to make the process less painful since we should expect the mini game to be better put together to prevent this. Other than the scanning and stripping down on character customization ME2 is easily one of the best games I've ever played period.

This is the worst minigame I have ever encountered. I like all the other ones in ME1 and ME2, but this is a perfect example of stuff a main character shouldn't be doing. It's paint-drying, grass-growing dull. There are anonymous techs for this stuff; is Shepard critically incapable of delegating?

i agree. it was as though BioWare said, "we don't want people to have too much fun, let's put something in the game that will make them hate us."

As far as finding eezo, if you read the codex before you start scanning then it usually mentions a war in orbit or a crashed vessel or something related to ships being in the area. Also I have yet to find a planet with less than 3 deposits of eezo.

I use a rubber band to hold down the LT. I know it moves slowly while scanning, but I like to be thorough. I often find a couple more spikes even after a planet is depleted.

Thanks for this thread. figured 'Moderate' pretty much meant move one, but nice to see official confirmation.

I think easiest way is tho go around the grid continuously releasing/pulling the left trigger (sort of tapping or trigger happy with it). When you see a spike on the graph or feel a jolt of vibration, check it out. Works for me and is thorough enough if you pay attention to where you go on the grid.

I am wondering, are we literally depleting entire planets of their resources? You can scan colonies, and if you take everything won't that have later effects?

As in mass effect 3?

Already came to these conclusions. Problem lies in mini game. Tedious, boring, inefficient. Affecting moral.

If you have an electric guitar or bass, hold your controller near the bridge pickup. The light EM emissions from the motor activating will hit your pickup as static even if you can't feel them to give you an audible that something's there
