Sorry if this seems like a daft question but the manual doesn't seem to cover it. What do the green bars on the scanning screen actually indicate?

Do they mean that scanning for that element is waste of time as the Normandy is full or is it something else? Or am I just missing something completely obvious?

I made the mistake of starting out with scanning every planet that was labeled rich and quickly got very aggravated with the scanning business. I'm now on my second game and I think this time around I'm just going to start with scanning only the planets that have anomalies on them and only the planets that have what resources I need at the time.

I think that will make it less aggravating, but honestly, the scanner moves too slowly even with the upgrade and it would have been nice if when you do the initial scan if somewhere there was a list somewhere that let the player know what percentage of element zero, platinum, iridium, and palladium there was on the planet... it would make scanning less of a chore.

If scanning planets on the 360 was as quick as it is on the PC version then there wouldn't be a problem. Needs to be patched. It's not fun; it's downright boring.

Hahahaha reading some of these posts gave me a good laugh. The lawnmower one especially, I mean really this stuff is as easy tapping L every second (AKA not rocket science LAWNMOWER guy!!). No need for OCD over some tedious scanning in planets.

Yeah by far the best way to scan planets is to rapidly press the LT sadly though BW flubbed up the exploration. Its pretty damn tedious now and I'll tell you what no way in Hell do I want to scan planets on a 2nd playthrough.

I miss driving around the Mako and doing 90 degree climbs :(

Here's a tip... if you need to post tips about how to make something suck less then perhaps it was not designed well. Just make the scanner move even faster and cover a larger area and it would be fine. Perhaps adding a planet scan upgrade that highlights mineral deposits like a doppler radar would make things better as well.

Instead we have to rapid-fire the trigger to move the scanner across the planet's surface more quickly. Sounds like a design flaw if you ask me and is no better than BXB in Halo or using a rapid-fire controller and a Magnum/Desert Eagle in Call of Duty. Seriously, just patch the scanner to cover more area and move more quickly when scanning (i.e. holding down the trigger) and stop trying to justify a poorly implemented feature that detracts from the rest of the game.

haha this.

I would pay more attention to planets farther from the Mass Relays. They tend to have richer resources.

Also, as someone mentioned on the first page, you should definately launch a probe to an area with a high spike only so you can conserve your probes. The max I've gotten was 3k for one mineral with a very high spike and 1k x 2 different minerals from rich planets.

I'm torn on this gaming mechanic. In terms of story immersion it's probably better. Now instead of having a planet with some debris and a base it feels like you either scan a planet or land on just one small spot, take care of business and leave. So in theory, I'm all for it.

In practice, I have a problem because I'm a completionist. I try to scan every planet until I get moderate or lower and sometimes that takes ages because there's one spot that will take a planet from good to depleted.

I have to say, it's monotonous. The good news is, I like the game enough that I've been sleep deprived from playing it long past the time I should have gone to bed. The bad news is that I tend to zone out pretty quickly while scanning and I've literally dozed off a few times while doing so (at which point I save and go to bed).

So maybe the trick is to stop being a completionist and only scan until I have the resources I need. Right now I have an overabundance of resources but not enough cash to buy all the upgrades to use the resources, which is frustrating in a different way. It would be nice to be able to sell some of the surplus. Perhaps that's something else that would be fixed by only scanning for the resources I need at any given time since I wouldn't be spending cash on probes.

Anyway, as far as I'm concerned the jury's still out because I think it's probably a great mechanic for people who have a different style of play than I do. I'll try adjusting my style next time and see if that works any better for me.

For those of you having trouble locating element zero, I have found that most habitable planets tend to have it in abundance. Currently inhabited, formerly, or even potentially. This isn't true 100% of the time, as every good rule has in exceptions, but I found it to be dependable.

Most people complaining about scan speed, or being boring, but NOONE complaining about carrying only 30 ****ty probes?:S It's just me or what? I'm finding a real pain in the ass having to travel after scanning each freaking planet back to the mass relee cause I'm out of probes ( I like scanning until is empty ), add that to having to replenish fuel after 1-2 travels and say byebye to credits

This is the worst minigame I have ever encountered. I like all the other ones in ME1 and ME2, but this is a perfect example of stuff a main character shouldn't be doing. It's paint-drying, grass-growing dull. There are anonymous techs for this stuff; is Shepard critically incapable of delegating?

i agree. it was as though BioWare said, "we don't want people to have too much fun, let's put something in the game that will make them hate us."

Amen.
Shepard has a PA to tell him he has a freaking email but can't get someone or perhaps some ai to do the scan?

I have added up the numbers you will need for every upgrade in the game on an single, initial playthrough. This should help people mine only as much as they have to, and not overdo this dull aspect of an otherwise wonderful game. My math may have an error or two, so assume these figures to be approximate, but they should be fairly accurate. It's nice to know even the ballpark figures though, so keep these numbers in mind.  (Pro-tip: tattoo them on your fingers, one element per finger... prison style!)

RESOURCE REQUIREMENTS FOR GETTING ALL AVAILABLE UPGRADES IN MASS EFFECT 2:

Element Zero: 47,250 (Assuming 1 Stat Re-Spec + 1 Adopted TeamMate Power.  Each additional = + 5000)
Platinum: 317, 500 (267,000 if Paragon w. no Med Bay upgrade.)
Palladium: 190,000
Iridium: 235,000

Nice to know you don't have to suck all the planets dry, and that some of you may have enough of a particular resource already to stop worrying about it entirely. Hope this helps. Carry on.

No prob.  Just simple addition, really... I have the Prima cheat-book.  I haven't used it for the quests or story, but considering how much I hated the planetary missions in the first game, I figured anything that would help cut down on the tedium would be money well spent.  Other than the mining, though, I can't say I've used the guide much at all.  It's been handy keeping track of which systems I've visited, though... and it tells you where to find planets rich in particular elements.

Yeah man... talk to everyone.  All of the team members have an "UPGRADES" option.  That's where you get it.  I think Miranda gave out the scanner speed, but I may be wrong.

I play on the PC, and in the PC version there is a probe upgrade which doubles the amount of probe you can carry. I researched that right away when I saw it. I can't figure it out how I got the upgrade though. Also there is an upgrade for the fule tank too, it allows for 1500 fule instead of the 1000.
