Good tips, although I had already figured them out.

My thoughts on scanning: it's ok, but it takes way too long. I liked the way you could just "survey" random planets in ME1... "you have found a league of one medallion" ...ah, good times..! ^^

I logged in to post this exact sentiment.  I'd like to hear an explanation from the game designers of why they went to the trouble of creating any aspect of this game (or any game, really) that is tedious.  Why?  For "realism"?  I don't want realism, I want FUN.  If I want to do something tedious but productive I'll go to the office.  :/

Sorry, but scanning in the game has nothing to do with realism. Realism you'd have one of the Engineers write a quick program that automates the scanning process, saves all the locations into a Database and then launches probes automatically.
Since you have an AI on board you could just tell it to do the scanning for you. Much more realistic then the current solution of the ships commander wasting hours and hours on a task that would best be solved by very, very simple automation.

For me, Scanning was fun maybe 5 times, ok for the next 5 times after that and then got to be purely tedious fast. And this is on the PC with upgraded scanners (which I got ASAP after the first time I tried scanning). The problem for me with the system is, that it is purely repetitious with no challenge and no need for any intelligent action or thought. All it takes up is time, without adding anything fun or interesting (I find it about as interesting as adding a space manually at the first position in each line in a 5000 line long text file).
I'd rather play the game then do something where I have to shut down any thinking and force myself through it. So not being able to bear it anymore I went against what I normally do: I cheated (had to look for sw for it first), knowing that I'd get the minerals anyway if I just "wasted" the time = the outcome is exactly the same as not cheating, minus my wasted time :innocent:.

Ah, but I wasn't referring to the contextual realism of Mass Effect, Phase - you're 100% right about what that realism would be!  Image IPB

No I was referring to the "real" realism of real life, wherein acquiring resources (legally, at least) is often tedious and repetitious.  And I look with envy upon your ability to cheat, for I am playing on an Xbox and therefore cannot.  Image IPB

All I could think of the first few times I scanned a planet was: I hope all those little babies that cried about the MAKO are happy!

Because you know that is what happened, right?

After I upgraded the scanner, I got used to it and worked on my methodology for thoroughly sweeping a planet.

With my ME1 and 2 import characters I found I had plenty of minerals to start, when I started running low I'd deplete a rich planet or two (by sticking to decent sized spikes only). More often than not it would yield enough minerals to get me through my currently available research.

I spin the planet and scan the poles, then the equator. Now I've got my planet divided into hemispheres. I put my scanner on the edge of the planetary disk then start scanning towards the center while I ALSO rotate the planet, I stop when the scanner finally reaches the opposite horizon, I turn it around, and move down a space or two and repeat in the opposite direction.

Using this method I can pretty quickly scan the planet in quarters. It keeps me a little more engaged in the planet scanning process (as opposed to just taping down your joysticks) and keeps me from getting to bored.

That being said I wonder if there isn't some kind of subtle mind-control signal embedded behind all the white noise...ALL HAIL THE HYPNOTOAD!!!!!

was doing most of these already but didn't realise the right thumb stick rotated (probs me being blind, bet it says on screen somewhere) so I'm glad I read this.

Got to say tho, I've scanned alot of planets and ignoring the mission critical ones I've really not found many anomalies. Recon on my second play through I'll scan differently i.e. scan the planet to see if there are anomalies and if there aren't and it's not rich in resources then move on. First time round I mined pretty much the lot one the planets that I did scan but only scanned about half of the planets

would've been fine if the tedium was counterbalanced with more rewards. like more research options or even new armors.

Or the possibility of selling ressources ( hello finishing my first playthrough with 600k~ of each and 180k~ eezo, bought almost all upgrades, just 2 left, not 'nuff credits :( ), or MORE things to buy WITH those almost infinite ressources

Actually with just fully scanning ONE single zone ( lets say, Omega nebula ) you got close to enough ressources for the entire game

I think BioWare should tweak the planet scanning just a little

Yeah, if that is something I wanted to endure (tedious and repetitious) during the time I've alloted to playing ME2, I could be doing tedious and repetitious Real Life Stuff and get paid for it :pinched:

Pretty good tips, also, most of the resources are around the center of the planets.

Just did my first scan on a friend's PC version of ME2 and let me tell you....TOTALLY NOT FAIR! The scanner moved as fast as the mouse even without the upgrade; with the upgrade it moved TOO fast and had to slow down a bit to see the spikes. I am able to deplete rich planets in about a minute by just waving the scanner across each face, top to bottom.

Wish I actually could move my ME1 saves to the PC, it is obviously the superior version.

Tip: There are no achievements for depleting and/or exploring all the planets of ME2. Those who aspire to do this have chosen their own fate, and I have no pity on you.

I did that my first play through lol

never

again

Now I just farm what I need and be done with it

I still visit every planet though just so each system is 100% lol

I don't mind the scanning. That is to say, I prefer it over the Mako. I got so fed up of going to planets in the first game and spending 20 minutes trying to take the damn thing over huge rocky mountain ranges.

I say Bioware should use Yahtzee's suggestion of jet packs and wolf-lasers.

rest in peace MAKO, the mission against the geth was ok, but you actually wasted MORE time trying to find mineral resources with the MAKO.

Stop scanning and get back to the story people!

Too late, already did it. I'd rather stab my eyes than do it again.

If the planet starts out as Rich, it may still have spikes of minerals even if you've mined it to "depleted". I scan the equator, the move up and cover the top half. Then the Rich planet is suddenly Depleted but I haven't scanned anything on the southern hemisphere. If there were lots of minerals on the northern hemisphere, there still are some on the bottom even if it says Depleted (I even scanned an Element Zero planet and when it said Depleted I kept scanning and found another spike of eezo.)

If the planet STARTS out on Moderate, it's not worth scanning. Only scan Rich planets IMO.

By the way here's a list of all the Anomalies (some of them are unlocked by completing a separate anomaly):
Crescent Nebula - Zelene - Helyme
Crescent Nebula - Lusarn - Tarith
Hourglass Nebula - Ploitari - Zanethu
Eagle Nebula - Amun - Neith
Caleston Rift - Solveig - Sinmara
Calaston Rift - Talava - Taitus
Sahrabarik - Fathar - Lorek
Titan Nebula - Haskins - Capek
Rosetta Nebula - Enoch - Joab
Sigurds Cradle - Skepsis - Franklin
Sigurd's Cradle - Decoris - Sanctum

Here are some planets that have Element Zero:
Hourglass Nebula - Osun - Erinle
Rosetta Nebula - Enoch - Leban
Sigurd's Cradle - Decoris - Sanctum
Eagle Nebula - Relic - Preying Mouth
Eagle - Amun - Anhur
Valhallen something - Micah - Farlas
Valhallen something - Micah - Kakabel

If I'm incorrect or missed any Anomalies let me know.

I dont know what the problem is really with scanning...I take care of all my scanning in the first 3hrs of play (to which I obtain 200k + of each resource minus Eezo because 50k is all you really ever need of Eezo.) After that, I never have to scan for the rest of that playthrough. Secondly, the planet scanning is much better than the broke ass mako in the first game so in terms of ME1 to ME2, it was a Mass Improvement (pun intended).

Not sure if this has been mentioned already or not but it helps if you go to the Xbox360 Controller options and switch the trigger layout to Southpaw. This way, you scan the planet with the Right Trigger and launch a probe with the Left Trigger (the interface will tell you that you still scan with LT and Launch Probe with RT, but it's a lie). This is a lot more comfortable because it's annoying to constantly mess around with the LT and use the left stick to navigate. You can also try switching around the stick layout if you prefer to have LT be the scanner and the right stick actively maneuvering. Anyways, cheers!

Don't just send probes down to any little movement you get on the scanner. You're still paying for those probes ya know. Might want to make sure it's at least worth your investment to extract the resources. It isn't always. I'm never going to send a probe just to recover 200 platinum. Waste of time no matter how thourough you're being. If the scan bar doesn't jump to at least 3/5's of the meter, I don't even acknowledge it. And needless to say, I haven't had any trouble upgrading anything after I find the research for it.

=== Christina says ===

Good tip! Added.

I agree, unless the spike in resourses is at or higher than the fourth line from the bottom I don't fire a probe. Helps me save credits for the upgrades at the shops... those can get expensive. ;)
