Hello,

I purchased Mass Effect 2 yesterday and I'm having a major problem with the in game dialog sound.  Basically the game runs perfectly fine with full max settings, the sound effects and music are perfect for the most part, but I was VERY disapointed to find the opening moments of the game ruined by the fact when a character speaks I can bearly hear them talk (somtimes not at all) and when I can hear them.. well.. it sounds like they are talking inside of a tin can.

I played through the first mission of the game to see if it's just a problem with the location but the dialog problem continues to persist into mission 2.  This issue completly ruins the experiance for me.. I'd rather not harken back to the 8 bit days of Final Fantasy and read thousands of lines of dialog to get the story.

Does anyone else have this problem? Any help in resolving this issue would be greatly appreciated

My system specs are as follows:

Windows XP Home edtion (yes yes yes fully up to date)
AMD 64 X2 Dual Core Processor 3800+ (2 Cpu's)
NVIDIA GeForce 8800 GTX (yes yes yes latest drivers)
Sound Max HD Audio
4GB RAM

I have the same problem as you. Most of the dialogue are ok, but sometimes I hear nothing, others times it's like people are talking in a can. My specs are:

Windows XP Pro SP3
Intel Core 2 Quad CPU Q9550 @ 2.83 Ghz
ATI Radeon HD 4870
ASUS P5Q Pro motherboard (using onboard sound card)
4GB RAM

Well I found a fix kind of. I went into the Mass effect Config and clicked on Sound; On the bottom right I clicked on "Configure sound devices" a window came up, in the Volume Tab I clicked on the Advanced settings button for Speaker Settings, clicked on the Performance Tab and Set the "Hardware acceleration" Slider from full to none and applied the settings.

I started Mass Effect 2 and started a new game.. lo and behold I can now actually hear the voices during dialog! the trade off however is that the sound in general has a bit of an annoying stutter to it.. probably due to the lack of acceleration.. the bright side is that it's A LOT more tolerable than not hearing the voices at all.

I hope this helps everyone having this issue with the Dialog in ME2 and hope that the Designers will come up with a patch to fix it in the near (ish) future.

I'd like to hear if this little tweak helps anyone here so please post your results if you give it a try

Thank you

Your work around is successful - the volume in dialog sequences seems to be at the same level now as the other voice sounds in the game.  However, the stuttering is fairly intolerable itself.  I have half a mind to just play the game with subtitles and turn up the volume when needed and hope for a fairly quick resolution from BioWare.

Thanks for the suggestion though!

Your very welcome. I hope they come up with a fix for this soon. I submitted a ticket to EA tech support regarding this issue. I know it's a long shot but I'll post the results of that here.

Thanks a lot for posting your results

Thank's for the info. I had the same problem and the solution was to change the sound config like you described, but in my case i had to change it from a 7.1 to a stereo-setup. Afterwards it worked perfectly and sound is cristal clear.

I also have this problem and my workaround was to reconfigure my 5.1 surround sound setup to a stereo setup. I can hear the dialog just fine now, but i lose out on surround goodness :(

Thanks a lot guys. This workaround is much better than switching off the hardware acceleration. Though it's a tragedy to sacrifice the sound surround goodness at least we can now finish the game with a more tolerable sound experience, at least until they solve it with a patch or two ;)

I hope the mods will make your workaround into a sticky

Has anybody reported this to Bioware yet? I'm having the same issue, and I use an external amp with an optical connection over SPDIF...

Had same problem. I went into my audio manager dropped it down to 2CH speakers tested it; the dialog sound came back. So, I continued and moved it up to 4CH, then 6CH. All speakers & sound are now working the way they should. I don't know why it did this considering my first time through the game I had no sound issues what so ever. But at least I can fix it easily without uninstalling which I was about to do.

This problem just started for me today. It ran fine, then, today, after not updating anything, it breaks. It makes me sad. I'ma try the accelleration workaround, but stuttering is not my idea of a proper fix.

I still have the problem, and when I set the speakers to 2.0, click Apply, the Mass Effect 2 utility still says 7.1!! Is this problem being fixed, bioware?

I've had this problem with Mass Effect 1 too. Now I use my 5.1 system as a 2.1 just to hear the dialogue but most of the sound effects are almost inaudible.

can any1 help me? I still couldn't fix this, the stutter that comes with no hardware acceleration is worse than the original problem.

So I set my configuration at "stereo desktop speakers" (translating from portuguese) and as soon as I fire up my game the dialogue is still "in the back speakers".

And if I minimize it or exit it, when i open the configuration again, it's set to 7.1!!

My Solution
I followed all the above guides on how to fix it and did a little exploring of the settings. So, thank you to all those people who pointed me in the right direction.
In the config go to sound and configure sound devices as instructed before.
Advanced button in volume. This brings up the playback controls, here I went into the speaker volume and found the volume controls for all the different channels.
Surprise, surprise one was set on 0... Channel 3. turn this up, and voila... you have voices, no more tin cans and surround sound goodiness!!!

Does anyone know how to get to the audio channel controls on Windows 7 64 bit? I have been tinkering for over an hour with no success and google isn't being very forthcoming either.

Thanks

For me, everything was working fine until I installed the Cerberus DLC last night. That seemed to break most of the dialogue. I can still hear ambient sounds, sound effects and such, but most of the dialogue is gone. Anyone else with this problem? Do I need to reinstall ME2?
